Cloud video storage can mean either an archive that keeps recordings for later or a service that continuously broadcasts uploaded videos. For Twitch streamers who want to keep past broadcasts beyond Twitch’s replay window, the practical answer is to enable VOD storage before going live, then download or export each important recording before it expires. A continuous YouTube broadcast service is a different tool, not a substitute for an archive.
What cloud video storage means for a streamer
A replay page on a livestreaming platform is convenient, but it is not necessarily a permanent archive. “Cloud storage” may refer to a file archive where recordings are kept for later retrieval, or to a broadcast service that plays uploaded video continuously. Those solve different problems: one preserves files; the other keeps a channel live.
For a durable archive, consider how long the recording will remain available, whether you control a local file or depend on a platform account, whether it will be private or public, how much effort retrieval takes, what storage or retrieval costs apply, and what happens if an account or subscription ends. Keep a copy somewhere independent when a recording matters, and check that the copy plays before relying on it.
How long does Twitch keep VODs?
Twitch’s On-Demand Content help page, accessed in 2026, lists these retention windows for past broadcasts. They are Twitch policy details by account category, not general cloud-storage limits; check Twitch’s current policy because it can change.

The Twitch help page also notes a 7-day expiration for certain vertical or 2K versions. The standard retention window is therefore not a guarantee that every version of a VOD will remain available for the same period.
Enable Twitch VOD storage before streaming
Twitch past broadcasts are not saved unless Past Broadcast storage is enabled in the stream settings. Twitch also notes that configuration or network problems can prevent a VOD from saving, so verify that a broadcast appears in your video list rather than assuming it was captured.

- Before going live, open your Twitch creator settings and enable the Past Broadcast storage option in stream settings. Twitch may adjust interface labels or layout; use the current Twitch Help instructions for the exact path.
- After a stream, check that the past broadcast appears in your Twitch video list and can be played.
- If the recording is important, download or export it while it is still within the retention period. Do not wait until the final day.
How to save Twitch streams after they expire
Once Twitch’s retention period has passed, the VOD may no longer be available to download or export. The reliable preservation step is to make the copy before expiry. Twitch documents two routes: download the VOD for local storage, or connect Twitch to YouTube and export it there.
- Download locally: use Twitch’s VOD download option and save the file to a computer or external hard drive. Keep enough space for your recordings; capacity depends on each file’s resolution, bitrate, duration, and how long you plan to retain it.
- Export to YouTube: connect your Twitch account to YouTube and use Twitch’s export workflow to save the VOD to your YouTube account. This keeps the recording hosted under another platform account rather than giving you an independent local file.
- Verify the copy: open the downloaded file or the hosted export and confirm it plays before treating it as your archive.

Highlights and Uploads are not the same as ordinary VODs
Twitch’s help page describes a combined 100-hour limit for Highlights and Uploads. Ordinary past broadcasts do not count toward that limit. Highlights and Uploads are a separate content category, so their storage limit should not be confused with the retention window for standard VODs.
Choose an archive, a hosted export, or a continuous broadcast
