To stream media from an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine to YouTube, create an internet-connected Linux VM, connect to it over SSH, install an FFmpeg build that supports RTMPS, and send the file to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a 1080p30 H.264 stream, YouTube’s current recommendation is 10 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Test the feed in YouTube before making it public.
Before you begin
This setup sends a media file from a cloud VM to YouTube Live. It assumes you can use OCI’s console, SSH, and a Linux shell. The VM must have a route to the public internet and enough compute capacity to handle the selected encoding profile. No particular OCI shape or FFmpeg command has been performance-tested here, so treat the settings below as platform targets, then verify the result in YouTube’s preview and stream-health panel.
- An OCI tenancy and a Linux VM, such as an Ubuntu image.
- A public-internet route for the VM and an SSH access path. Restrict SSH ingress to a trusted source address when feasible.
- A media file accessible to the VM, either stored there or transferred to it.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An FFmpeg build with the needed RTMPS protocol support. Check the installed build rather than assuming every package includes the same capabilities.
1. Create an OCI VM with internet access
Check Always Free eligibility and capacity
If you plan to use Always Free resources, select your tenancy’s home region and check whether an eligible shape is available. Oracle’s current Always Free documentation lists the VM.Standard.A1.Flex shape and Ubuntu among eligible options. For Ampere A1 Flex, Oracle documents the first 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month, equivalent for Always Free tenancies to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. Capacity can be temporarily unavailable in a home region, so instance creation may have to wait. See Oracle’s Always Free resource documentation.
Set up the network and SSH access
Create or select a VCN and a public subnet with internet connectivity, then assign a public IP if you intend to administer the VM directly over SSH. Configure ingress so SSH is allowed from your trusted source address rather than broadly exposed where feasible. Oracle’s Linux tutorial covers the VCN, subnet, internet access, instance creation, and SSH workflow: Oracle Linux VM setup tutorial. Console labels and security defaults can change; review the settings displayed for your tenancy before creating the instance.

Connect and prepare the VM
Use the private key configured when creating the instance to connect over SSH. Install FFmpeg using the current instructions for the Ubuntu release you selected. Because package versions and build options vary, check the installed FFmpeg version and protocol support before building a workflow around RTMPS. Exact install commands and package capabilities are not established here; use current Ubuntu and FFmpeg documentation for your image and package source.
2. Get YouTube’s RTMPS destination and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and open Live Control Room.
- Copy the RTMPS URL shown for that stream. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and use the RTMPS destination rather than guessing an ingest host or path.
- Copy the stream key from Live Control Room and treat it as a password. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
- Keep the URL and key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream in transit to Google. Its RTMPS guidance explains where to find the URL and what to check if an SSL error occurs: YouTube Help: Stream using a custom encoder.
3. Choose an output profile your VM can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives the platform-side targets; the VM still has to encode at that quality and maintain a stable outbound path. Start with a profile appropriate to both your source and the instance’s actual capability, then check YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include:

| Output profile | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Key video settings |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval |
These are YouTube’s current recommendations for H.264, not guarantees that a particular OCI instance can encode or transmit at that rate. YouTube also publishes AV1 and H.265/HEVC settings; check its current encoder table if you choose either codec. The platform supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, at up to 60 fps. Its encoder basics recommend CBR, a keyframe interval of two seconds and no more than four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; its advanced guidance lists 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Choose a resolution and frame rate the VM can handle, not just the highest profile YouTube accepts. More pixels, higher frame rates, and more complex source material can increase encoding load. A lower profile that stays stable is preferable to a nominally higher-quality output that drops frames or loses connection.
4. Send the media from FFmpeg to YouTube
Configure FFmpeg to read your media and publish to the exact RTMPS destination and key from Live Control Room. Command-line options depend on the input, installed FFmpeg build, chosen codec, and encoding method; exact command syntax and option interactions are not verified here. Do not copy an unverified command as if it were guaranteed to work. Check the official FFmpeg documentation for your installed build and confirm that it supports the required protocol and options.

- Make the media file available on the VM and confirm its path and readable permissions.
- Choose the output codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio codec, and audio settings to match both the source and a YouTube profile the VM can sustain.
- Set the video output to CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where supported by your chosen encoder, following YouTube’s current guidance.
- Use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room as the output destination, with the stream key supplied as a credential. Avoid placing the key in a script or command history that other users can read.
- Start with a private or otherwise controlled test stream. Check YouTube’s preview, audio and video, and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public.
5. Test before going public
YouTube recommends testing with movement and sound similar to what viewers will encounter, then reviewing the stream-health messages. In the preview, check for correct framing, audio presence and sync, stable motion, and any warnings about bitrate or connection. If the source has little movement or no audio, it may not expose the same issues as the intended programme.
For a documentary channel, also confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the footage and soundtrack. A technically healthy feed does not establish permission to broadcast copyrighted material or guarantee eligibility for monetization. Review YouTube’s live-stream rules and the rights attached to each source before scheduling a public stream.

OCI cannot create the VM
Always Free resources depend on home-region eligibility and available capacity. Try again later or review the eligible shapes and regions in Oracle’s current documentation. Do not assume that a capacity shortage means your network configuration is wrong.

SSH connection fails
Check that the instance has a public IP if you are connecting directly, the subnet has internet connectivity, the ingress rule permits SSH from your current trusted address, and you are using the private key associated with the instance. If your network blocks the connection, check its outbound restrictions as well.
FFmpeg does not accept the RTMPS output
Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol you are using and that the output destination is the RTMPS URL copied from Live Control Room. Package builds can differ, so a command that works with one FFmpeg build may not work with another.
YouTube reports an SSL error
Verify the scheme and server against the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room; do not substitute a guessed endpoint. YouTube advises trying port 443 if needed. Its instructions are at YouTube Help: Stream using a custom encoder.

The stream starts but looks unstable
Compare the chosen bitrate and encoding load with the VM’s actual capacity and the stability of its outbound connection. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, then test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the selected profile is not sustainable. No particular OCI shape’s encoding performance is established here.
The stream stops when left running
Oracle documents an idle-instance reclamation policy for certain Always Free instances. During a seven-day period, instances may be reclaimed when CPU utilization at the 95th percentile is below 20%, network utilization is below 20%, and, for A1 instances, memory utilization is below 20%. Whether a streaming workload meets those conditions depends on its measured metrics. Check Oracle’s current Always Free documentation and monitor the instance rather than assuming an Always Free VM is guaranteed to remain allocated indefinitely.
Costs and operational trade-offs
Always Free compute can reduce hosting cost if your tenancy, home region, shape, and workload fit Oracle’s current eligibility and capacity rules. It is not the same as a managed streaming service: you provision and maintain the VM, install and validate FFmpeg, protect the stream key, monitor the process and network, and respond to failures. For a persistent broadcast, include the possibility of capacity unavailability and idle-instance reclamation in your operating plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube around the clock rather than operate FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
