Transfer your video files to the VPS over SSH with scp or rsync, create an ordered FFmpeg concat list on the server, then send the paced playlist to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The steps below cover the file transfer, playlist setup, encoder command, and checks needed before going live.

Before you begin

  • A VPS with SSH access, enough storage for the videos, and enough CPU and outbound bandwidth to encode and stream them.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
  • Video files you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance also requires compliance with its Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to go live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s guidance.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream and copy the server URL and stream key shown for it.
  3. Use the exact ingest URL shown in the Live Control Room. Prefer the encrypted RTMPS address where YouTube provides it.

Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not put it in a public script repository, share it in screenshots, or leave it in shell history or logs that other users can read. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream setup and supported ingest options: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Connect to the VPS and prepare a directory

Use the hostname, SSH username, port, and authentication method supplied by your VPS provider. Connect from a terminal with your provider’s SSH details, for example:

ssh user@host

If your VPS uses a non-default SSH port, specify it with -p, for example ssh -p 2222 user@host. Once connected, create a destination directory. This example uses /srv/stream/videos:

sudo mkdir -p /srv/stream/videos
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /srv/stream/videos

Use a location where your account can write and where the disk has room for the full media library, playlist file, and any temporary files. The directory and permissions may differ on your VPS.

Transfer the videos from your computer

One-time upload with scp

From your local computer, run:

scp -r ./videos user@host:/srv/stream/videos/

Replace ./videos, user, and host with your local folder and VPS login details. OpenSSH documents scp as copying files over an SSH connection; current OpenSSH uses SFTP for the transfer by default. If you use a non-default SSH port, pass it as an uppercase -P option, such as scp -P 2222 -r ./videos user@host:/srv/stream/videos/. See the OpenSSH scp manual.

Repeat uploads with rsync

For a library you update over time, run this on your local computer:

rsync -av --progress ./videos/ user@host:/srv/stream/videos/

The trailing slash on ./videos/ means “copy the contents of this directory” into the destination. Run the same command again after adding or changing files; rsync can avoid retransmitting unchanged file data. For a non-default SSH port, add an SSH transport option, for example -e 'ssh -p 2222'. See the rsync manual.

Use a graphical SFTP client

If you prefer a graphical interface, use an SFTP client configured with the VPS hostname, username, SSH port, and key or password. Confirm the server identity before accepting a new host key. SFTP transfers files over encrypted SSH; the same destination and file checks apply as with command-line transfers.

Check the upload before streaming

On the VPS, list the files and compare the count and total size with the local folder. Open or probe a sample file to make sure it arrived intact and is readable by FFmpeg. For critical media, compare checksums generated on the local machine and VPS. These are practical integrity checks; no particular checksum procedure is required by YouTube or the transfer tools.

Build an ordered playlist for FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads files in the order listed. In /srv/stream/videos, create playlist.txt containing a header and one relative path per video:

file 'clip01.mp4'
file 'clip02.mp4'
file 'clip03.mp4'

Use filenames in the intended playback order; if the names sort differently from the desired sequence, write the lines manually in the right order. Keep this list beside the clips and use simple relative filenames. The concat demuxer’s safe-path mode accepts portable relative paths. Its inputs work best when they have matching stream layouts and compatible codec and time-base parameters; mismatches, inaccurate durations, or truncated inputs can cause gaps or artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Send the playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg

For compatible source files, this example re-encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, paces file playback in real time, and sends an FLV feed to YouTube over RTMPS:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i /srv/stream/videos/playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'

Replace the example RTMPS address with the exact server URL and key from the Live Control Room. Keep the full URL private. The bitrate and keyframe values are examples, not universal settings: adjust them for your source resolution and frame rate and check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations before starting. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). In the example, -g 60 gives a two-second GOP only when the encoded output runs at 30 frames per second; match the GOP to the actual frame rate. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the incoming feed; see its encoder settings guidance.

What the main options do

  • -re reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it.
  • -f concat -safe 1 uses the concat demuxer and its safe-path checks for the playlist file.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac re-encode to widely supported video and audio formats. This uses VPS CPU.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set example video-rate controls; -b:a sets example audio bitrate.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a broadly compatible pixel format.
  • -g sets the GOP/keyframe spacing in frames, so its timing depends on output frame rate.
  • -f flv selects the container used for the RTMP/RTMPS feed.

If all clips are concat-compatible and already have matching parameters supported by YouTube, stream-copying may reduce CPU use. It is only appropriate after checking the actual codecs, frame rates, time bases, and audio/video stream layouts; otherwise, re-encoding can provide a more consistent feed at the cost of compute.

Preview and monitor the live feed

  1. Start FFmpeg and check its output for input, encoding, or connection errors.
  2. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect picture and sound before going live.
  3. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk space, and network use while the feed runs.
  4. Test ahead of the intended broadcast. YouTube advises having upload capacity with 20% headroom and checking the feed rather than assuming a successful connection guarantees a healthy stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Common problems and fixes

SSH or file transfer fails

  • Connection refused or timeout: verify the VPS address, SSH port, firewall rules, and that the server is running.
  • Permission denied: confirm the username and authentication method, and check that the remote directory is writable by that account.
  • Host identity warning: verify the host key with your VPS provider before accepting it; do not blindly trust an unexpected change.
  • Upload stops partway: check local and VPS connectivity and available disk space. For repeat transfers, rerun rsync to continue synchronizing files.

FFmpeg cannot read the playlist or clips

  • Playlist not found: check the path passed to -i and confirm the file exists on the VPS.
  • Unsafe filename or path: use relative filenames in the playlist beside the clips; avoid unsupported path forms with -safe 1.
  • Concat errors, gaps, or glitches: verify every listed file exists, is complete, and has compatible stream layouts and timing. Re-encode to consistent parameters if necessary.

YouTube does not receive a healthy feed

  • Connection or authentication error: confirm you copied the correct current RTMPS server URL and stream key, and that the key has not been changed or mistyped.
  • Feed connects but drops frames or buffers: inspect VPS outbound capacity and resource use; reduce the output bitrate or choose a VPS with suitable sustained bandwidth and compute.
  • Video or audio is rejected or problematic: check codec, pixel format, bitrate mode, sample rate, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings guidance.
  • No preview appears: check FFmpeg’s connection log, the selected stream in Live Control Room, and whether the channel can currently stream live.

Choose a VPS that can sustain the stream

For this workflow, assess the VPS by available storage, sustained outbound bandwidth, CPU capacity for encoding, reliability, and location relative to your audience and ingest route. A playlist that plays successfully from disk can still fail if the server cannot sustain the upload rate or encoding workload. Provider limits vary by plan and region, so check the specific VPS terms rather than assuming a particular allowance.
