For consistent orientation in a YouTube Live playlist, inspect each source clip and rotate its decoded frames before encoding. Do not rely on -c copy to apply rotation: stream copy does not decode or filter video, and rotation metadata is honored only when the output path and downstream player support it.
Why a clip can appear sideways
A video’s rotation may be stored as display metadata rather than baked into its pixels. FFmpeg’s -display_rotation input option sets per-stream rotation metadata and overrides an existing display transform. When transcoding with autorotation enabled, FFmpeg applies the rotation during filtering; otherwise, output rotation metadata is written only if the muxer supports it. That conditional behavior does not establish that a particular live protocol or YouTube’s ingest path will preserve and apply the transform. FFmpeg option documentation
A playlist adds another variable: its clips may have different dimensions or display transforms. Inspect each item rather than assuming one rotation value applies to the entire playlist.
Choose how to handle rotation
| Approach | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bake rotation into frames | Decode video, apply the correct rotation filter, then encode the transformed frames. | More dependable for consistent display because playback does not depend on honoring a rotation tag. It requires video encoding. |
| Keep rotation as metadata | Preserve or set a display transform instead of turning the pixels. | Depends on muxer and downstream support; the exact YouTube Live path is not established. |
Stream copy (-c:v copy) |
Passes the encoded video through without decoding or filtering. | Fast and avoids re-encoding, but cannot apply a transpose filter. It may also fail if the target container cannot represent required information. FFmpeg stream-copy documentation |
For a live playlist where uniform presentation matters, baking each clip’s intended orientation into its frames is the more dependable choice. This is a recommendation based on FFmpeg’s documented filter and metadata behavior, not a guarantee about every source, muxer, protocol, or YouTube playback path.

Inspect every playlist item before encoding
- Probe each source. Run
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width,height:stream_side_data=rotation -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 input.mp4, replacinginput.mp4with the actual filename. Review the video dimensions and any reported rotation side data. If the probe does not expose a value, inspect FFmpeg’s input log and the file’s display matrix; do not infer orientation from width and height alone. - Make an orientation inventory. Record the intended displayed orientation and dimensions for every playlist item. A portrait clip that needs a quarter-turn and a landscape clip that is already upright need different treatment.
- Choose one output geometry. Decide whether the live output should be portrait or landscape and set a consistent frame size and timing policy for all inputs. The appropriate filter depends on each clip’s actual transform; there is no safe universal angle for a mixed playlist.
- Test a representative clip. Apply the planned transform to a short segment and inspect the encoded result before preparing the full playlist.
Bake the transform into the video
When transcoding, FFmpeg’s -autorotate (enabled by default in normal operation) applies input display rotation at the filtering stage. If you build an explicit filter chain, choose its transform from the inspected source metadata and ensure the output geometry matches your chosen orientation. FFmpeg’s documentation for autorotation and -display_rotation explains the distinction between rotating filtered frames and writing metadata.
Do not pair a video filter with -c:v copy: a filter needs decoded frames. If you explicitly supply -display_rotation, remember it is an input option and changes the input transform; it does not itself guarantee that a live output or YouTube will display the clip correctly.

Audio can be copied only if its codec and the chosen output container are compatible. Otherwise encode audio to a format supported by the container and YouTube ingest configuration. For a playlist, verify that transitions do not unexpectedly change dimensions, frame timing, or audio behavior.
Why there is no universal command here
The correct filter, playlist demuxing method, output container, and codec settings depend on the source files and FFmpeg build. A command that works for one file may rotate another clip the wrong way or produce inconsistent geometry. Test the exact playlist and output protocol you intend to use.

Metadata-only options and their limits
FFmpeg’s -display_rotation[:stream_specifier] input option takes rotation in degrees counter-clockwise before display and overrides stored display-transform metadata. With transcoding and autorotation enabled, the rotation is applied during filtering; otherwise, writing it to the output depends on muxer support. A metadata-only approach is suitable only when both the output muxer and downstream player honor the transform.
For H.264, FFmpeg’s h264_metadata bitstream filter documents display_orientation modes pass, insert, remove, and extract; insert mode supports rotation and flip, while extract attaches the display matrix as packet side data. That H.264 signaling is distinct from a guarantee about container metadata or YouTube playback. FFmpeg H.264 metadata filter documentation

The documented behavior does not resolve whether a specific combination of source format, playlist method, FFmpeg build, output muxer or protocol, and YouTube ingestion path will preserve or apply rotation metadata. If you choose metadata-only handling, verify the exact route end to end.

For H.264, YouTube’s guidance accessed October 3, 2026 recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Choose the applicable resolution and frame-rate guidance rather than treating bitrate as a fix for rotation. Recheck YouTube’s settings before a scheduled broadcast because ingest recommendations can change.
Test the complete playlist before going live
- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast using the same playlist, FFmpeg build, encoding settings, and output route planned for the event.
- Check the YouTube preview and resulting playback for orientation at the opening, after each playlist transition, and when a clip with a different source transform appears.
- Use representative audio and visible motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube advises testing representative content and monitoring stream health. YouTube live-streaming tips
- If any clip is sideways or inconsistent, inspect that source’s transform and dimensions again, correct its frame filter or normalization, and repeat the test.
Troubleshoot common rotation failures
- Video remains sideways after using
-c:v copy: stream copy cannot rotate decoded frames. Transcode the video and apply the appropriate filter, or use metadata only after verifying muxer and playback support. - One playlist item is correct but another is not: the clips likely differ in stored transform or geometry. Probe them individually and set the transform for each source rather than applying one assumed angle to all.
- Metadata appears to be set but YouTube still shows the wrong orientation: the output muxer or downstream live path may not carry or honor it. Use baked frame rotation and test the exact ingest route.
- A filter command fails with stream copy enabled: remove video stream copy and re-encode the filtered video. Keep audio copy only if it is compatible with the output container.
- Output is cropped, stretched, or changes shape at a transition: check the post-rotation dimensions and normalize all playlist items to the chosen output geometry without assuming the same filter fits every input.
