For a stereo YouTube Live sleep-sounds stream, start with 128 kbps audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Those are YouTube’s general recommendations for stereo live audio—not a sleep-specific preset or a guarantee that a stream will run continuously. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, then test the complete stream and leave bandwidth headroom.
Recommended YouTube Live audio settings
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 128 kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. It lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. These settings are a sensible starting point for a stereo ambient or sleep-sounds stream.
| Setting | Stereo recommendation | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps | YouTube’s general stereo live-stream recommendation; not a sleep-specific test result. |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s general stereo recommendation. |
| Codec over RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | YouTube lists both for live encoder audio. |
Set these in your encoder’s audio output settings. The exact menu names vary by software or hardware, so confirm that the selected stream profile actually outputs stereo at the intended bitrate and sample rate.
Choose stereo or surround based on the source
A typical sleep-sounds recording mixed for two channels should be streamed as stereo. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 128 kbps for stereo, compared with 384 kbps for 5.1 audio; it lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. Do not choose 5.1 just to raise the bitrate: the source and encoder need to produce genuine surround audio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube says 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. For a stereo RTMP/RTMPS stream, AAC or MP3 is supported. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the platform’s current recommendations.
RTMP/RTMPS and HLS audio options
The available audio codecs depend on the ingestion protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3, and also recommends 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz. HLS sends media in segments and YouTube describes it as having higher latency than RTMP; choose the protocol supported by your encoder and workflow rather than changing protocols to chase an audio-quality improvement.

Audio bitrate is not video bitrate
Audio bitrate covers the sound portion of the stream. Video has separate bitrate settings, which vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not use a video bitrate figure as your audio setting or assume that changing audio bitrate fixes video buffering. Configure each track separately and make sure your total outgoing stream fits within your available upload capacity.

Test the complete stream before leaving it on
- Set the stereo audio profile. Choose 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, and AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Test representative material. Preview a section with the same kind of sound, loudness, transitions, and movement you intend to stream. Listen for clipping, dropouts, noise, or abrupt loop boundaries.
- Check upload capacity. Account for the combined audio and video bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom, and says the stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Its streaming tips explain bandwidth and reliability considerations.
- Review stream health and playback. Before committing to a long session, check YouTube’s stream health messages and watch the stream as a viewer. Confirm that audio stays present and synchronized through transitions.
- Monitor after going live. Keep an eye on stream health and audio/video quality, especially if the encoder or network conditions can change during the session.
Latency is a separate choice
Latency is the delay between capture and playback, not audio bitrate. A sleep-sounds stream without real-time interaction may have little need for low latency. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so select a latency mode based on whether interaction matters and how stable playback needs to be. See Manage live stream settings.
Does 128 kbps guarantee a 24/7 stream?
No. YouTube’s cited encoder pages give general live audio settings; they do not specify a special bitrate or encoder profile for sleep sounds or 24/7 broadcasting. The bitrate recommendation is not an assurance of uninterrupted operation, eligibility for a particular duration, or channel compliance. Long-running streams still depend on the full encoder and network setup, and applicable YouTube rules and channel circumstances.
