FFmpeg can play a prepared playlist, but it does not provide a complete native wall-clock scheduler for choosing among playlists. Create a separate concat list for each sequence, then use an external scheduler or wrapper to launch the right FFmpeg process at the right time. Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately in Studio: that controls the event, not which files FFmpeg plays.
How the three scheduling jobs differ
- Playlist order: FFmpeg reads a list of media files in sequence.
- Clock-based selection: An external scheduler or wrapper chooses which list to run and when to start or restart FFmpeg.
- YouTube event: YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API manages the broadcast event viewers can watch.
These are separate controls. YouTube describes a broadcast as an event and a stream as the inbound audio-video configuration; a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. Scheduling a Studio event does not select or change FFmpeg’s input playlist. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.
Prepare one concat list for each playlist
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
The concat demuxer reads files and directives from a text file in order. Make a separate list for each intended sequence, with one file entry per line. For example, a list can contain:

file '/media/documentary-three.mp4'Save it as a text file such as weekday.txt, then point FFmpeg at that list with the concat demuxer:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i weekday.txt -c copy -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_STREAM_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the example file paths and YouTube destination with your own. This stream-copy example is appropriate only when the inputs meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements and the chosen output is suitable for your ingest configuration. The -re option reads input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as possible.
Check compatibility before relying on stream copy
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, time bases, and compatible stream layout. Timestamp adjustments are made globally, but differences in stream lengths can create gaps; inaccurate duration metadata can also cause artifacts. Review FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation before building a long-running schedule.
- Inspect each file’s audio and video streams, codec, time base, and duration.
- Use consistent stream layouts across a list; do not assume that matching file extensions mean matching streams.
- Test the full sequence, including its transitions and final file, before putting it on a scheduled broadcast.
Normalize dissimilar files with the concat filter
If inputs differ and you need to normalize them, use a concat filter workflow that decodes, filters, and re-encodes them into a consistent output. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; the demuxer is useful when avoiding re-encoding for inputs that satisfy its constraints. The filter workflow requires an explicit input and output mapping appropriate to your files, so do not substitute a stream-copy command and expect incompatible media to become consistent automatically. Choose which playlist runs at a given time
After preparing lists, connect them to an external clock-based scheduler or wrapper. For example, a system scheduler can launch a script at chosen times, and that script can start FFmpeg with the relevant list. The scheduler and script are implementation choices: choose and test the behavior for your operating system and deployment.

- Write down each playlist’s intended start time and the corresponding concat-list filename.
- Choose whether each change can tolerate stopping one FFmpeg process and starting another. A restart-based design is straightforward to reason about, but can interrupt the outgoing stream while the encoder reconnects.
- Configure the scheduler to invoke a wrapper that selects the intended list and starts FFmpeg with the correct input and YouTube destination.
- Test the actual handoff, including what happens if the previous process has not exited, a scheduled job is missed, or FFmpeg fails to start.
The reviewed FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish a seamless, clock-triggered method for replacing a live concat playlist inside a running FFmpeg process. Treat in-process switching as a separate implementation that needs independent testing; do not assume changing a list file changes an already-running input.
Schedule and verify the YouTube broadcast separately
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream event and set its intended start time. Scheduling promotes an upcoming stream and can let viewers receive reminders; it does not choose your FFmpeg playlist. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the FFmpeg destination configuration. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send to the stream.
- Start the encoder using the playlist selected by your scheduler. Check the preview in Live Control Room, then use its controls to go live for the event as appropriate.
- Confirm the correct media is playing, the audio and video are present, and the event is associated with the intended broadcast before relying on the schedule.
YouTube’s API names the event a liveBroadcast and the inbound media configuration a liveStream. The API documentation, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, explains that a broadcast is a distinct YouTube video and that a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Use HLS only when that is your chosen ingest protocol
The following are YouTube HLS ingestion requirements, not general concat-demuxer requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, MPEG-TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup requirements if you choose HLS; do not apply these requirements to an RTMP workflow.

The wrong playlist starts
Check the scheduler’s time zone, job time, selected list path, and wrapper logic. Log which list the wrapper launches, then run that exact command manually before the scheduled handoff.

The stream has a gap or an artifact at a file boundary
Check that the inputs have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and verify duration metadata. Unequal stream lengths and inaccurate stored durations can produce gaps or timestamp artifacts. If the files are not compatible, normalize them with a concat-filter and re-encode workflow instead of stream-copying.

FFmpeg connects, but YouTube does not show the expected event
Verify that the configured stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube stream, and check the event and encoder preview in Live Control Room. A scheduled broadcast event and an FFmpeg playlist are separate configurations.
A playlist change does not affect the live output
Changing a concat list on disk does not establish that a running FFmpeg process will reload it. Use your tested scheduler/wrapper to stop and relaunch with the new list, or implement and test a separate switching method before depending on it.
HLS is more delayed than expected
That is a protocol trade-off noted by YouTube: HLS delivers segments and has higher latency than RTMP’s continuous-stream approach. Check that you intentionally chose HLS and follow its segment and playlist constraints.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Using prerecorded files in a live stream does not remove the need to have the rights to stream them. Confirm that each documentary, soundtrack, still image, and other included material is cleared for your use on YouTube. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg can successfully concatenate and transmit the files; technical playback is not evidence of permission or monetization eligibility.
