How to Schedule a 24/7 YouTube Channel with AWS Elemental MediaTailor

MediaTailor can assemble a continuous linear channel from VOD and live sources, but its playback endpoint is not a YouTube publishing integration. Here’s how to configure and verify the schedule.

AWS Elemental MediaTailor can assemble a continuous linear channel from scheduled video-on-demand (VOD) assets, live feeds, or a mix of both. It does not, by itself, publish that channel to YouTube: MediaTailor’s playback endpoint and YouTube’s live ingest are separate steps, and the reviewed AWS documentation does not establish a direct YouTube Live integration. Build and verify the MediaTailor channel first, then separately validate a delivery path that YouTube accepts.

What MediaTailor does—and what it does not do

MediaTailor channel assembly creates a linear stream by assembling manifests. The underlying video segments remain served from their origin; the service does not repackage those segments into a new stored video. AWS describes it as a “manifest-only service” for creating linear channels from existing VOD content mixed with live content (AWS: Using AWS Elemental MediaTailor to create linear assembled streams).

A channel schedule is an ordered set of programs referencing VOD or live sources. “24/7” is an operating objective, not a documented switch or uptime guarantee: maintain the intended schedule, keep the channel operating, and monitor its output. A MediaTailor playback endpoint is for compatible playback; do not treat it as a YouTube publishing or ingest URL. The YouTube distribution path needs its own implementation and verification.

Choose the programming model

Model What the schedule uses Key consideration
VOD-to-live Library assets added as VOD sources and scheduled as programs. Source packages need compatible child-stream counts and aligned durations in the getting-started workflow; use a consistent encoding template and confirm current requirements for your setup (AWS getting-started guide).
Live-to-live Incoming live sources scheduled as programs. Configure a package format and manifest location, and meet the live-manifest compatibility requirements below.
Mixed live and VOD Planned live events interspersed with scheduled library content. Prepare both source types and ensure channel outputs cover the source package groups and formats used.

AWS documents VOD-only and mixed live/VOD channel-assembly patterns. These are MediaTailor programming models; none eliminates the separate requirement to establish and test a YouTube-compatible distribution path (AWS: Working with live sources).

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the source locations and content

  1. Create a source location. In the MediaTailor console, define an origin name and an HTTP(S) base URL. AWS lists S3, a standard web server, a CDN, and a packaging origin such as MediaPackage as possible sources. S3 can optionally use SigV4 authentication. See Creating a source location.
  2. Add and configure sources. For a VOD lineup, add VOD sources and package configurations. For incoming live content, add live sources and configure a package format and manifest location. AWS says each live source must have at least one package configuration, and the channel needs corresponding outputs for the source groups and formats it will use (Adding live sources).
  3. Check VOD package compatibility. In the documented getting-started setup, sources within a package configuration must have the same number of child streams and their package durations must align. The tutorial recommends a consistent encoding template and cautions that per-title or automated ABR methods can violate these conditions in that setup. Confirm current service requirements against your own assets before encoding a production library.

Validate live manifests before scheduling

For live sources, check manifest compatibility independently of the order in which programs will appear. AWS’s live-source guidance includes these requirements and recommendations:

  • For HLS, include #EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME on the first segment in the manifest window and at every discontinuity.
  • Use DATERANGE for HLS ad markers.
  • AWS recommends that the source manifest window be at least as long as the channel’s manifest window; its guidance suggests a 30-second longer source window as a best practice.
  • Match the target duration and number of child playlists with existing sources.
  • For a package configuration, live sources should have the same number of child streams.

These points are drawn from AWS’s live-source guidance and Adding live sources. A manifest that fails these checks can prevent a source from fitting the channel even if its program is positioned correctly.

Create the channel and its outputs

  1. Create a channel in MediaTailor and choose the playback mode suited to the behavior you intend. Channel concepts and terminology are described in MediaTailor concepts.
  2. Define outputs corresponding to the package configurations your channel will use. HLS and DASH are examples of supported package formats in the channel-assembly documentation.
  3. Keep output and source configuration aligned. The channel needs outputs for the source groups and formats represented by the scheduled content. The output supplies a playback endpoint for compatible players; it is not, without a separately verified delivery setup, a YouTube Live ingest URL.

Build and maintain the schedule

  1. Add programs in the intended order. Each program refers to a VOD or live source. In the console workflow, a live program has a duration setting in milliseconds. Use MediaTailor’s schedule transition controls to position programs relative to one another. AWS documents the process in Adding a program to a channel’s schedule and Creating a program within a channel schedule.
  2. Cover the intended operating period. For a continuous channel, plan a sequence that continues for the period you need. For a looping channel, check that the lineup and playback mode produce the intended repeated programming; AWS’s schedule documentation does not define a special “24/7” setting.
  3. Plan edits around the loop. AWS says that on looping channels, an edit to a program scheduled within the next 10 minutes may not appear until the next loop. Allow for that behavior when planning near-term changes, and verify current service behavior before making operational commitments (Creating a program within a channel schedule).

Start the channel and test playback

  1. Start the channel after its sources, package configurations, outputs, and schedule are in place.
  2. Request the MediaTailor playback URL in a compatible player.
  3. Confirm that the manifest advances, the expected program plays, and transitions occur as scheduled. Test representative VOD and live transitions if the lineup mixes both.
  4. Separately verify the complete path from MediaTailor output to YouTube Live, including the mechanism that delivers the stream and YouTube’s ingest acceptance. The AWS getting-started guide includes starting and testing a channel, but the reviewed documentation does not provide the YouTube integration steps (Getting started with MediaTailor channel assembly).

Cost to account for

AWS’s getting-started tutorial states a channel fee of $0.10 per hour for active channels and says inactive channels are not charged. The tutorial’s publication year is not stated, so this figure should not be treated as a guaranteed current quote. Check the current AWS pricing page and the terms that apply to your account before budgeting (AWS getting-started guide).
