A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving or accepting a healthy stream. Start with the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare them with FFmpeg’s output, local recording, CPU load, outbound bandwidth, and route measurements. The information in the title alone cannot show that Chennai routing is at fault.
1. Check whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream
-
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and note the stream-health indicator and the timestamp and wording of each message. YouTube’s dashboard checks the submitted stream and displays errors alongside the health indicator. Its guidance is: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” YouTube encoder settings guidance.
-
Use the displayed error to choose the next check rather than inferring success from FFmpeg’s process state. YouTube describes red errors as critical; they may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow errors can indicate degraded quality. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
-
Compare the dashboard’s timestamps with FFmpeg’s stderr and any monitoring logs. This helps distinguish a stream that stopped reaching YouTube from a player or event issue, and gives you a common time window for investigating the encoder and network.

2. Check FFmpeg output and the source
Determine whether FFmpeg is producing valid media, not merely whether its process exists.
-
Inspect the encoder’s output or preview, if available: does the video move, and is audio present and intelligible?
-
Review FFmpeg’s stderr around the stall for errors or output interruptions. Preserve the actual command line and FFmpeg build/version when investigating; the symptom alone does not identify a particular FFmpeg message or option.
-
If you configured a local archive, check that the file is being written and growing, and inspect playback around the failure time.

Check CPU load and the media source. If the encoder output or local archive is unhealthy, investigate those before blaming the network.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking local output and encoder errors. If the encoder looks healthy but the stream has trouble, it points toward the outbound internet connection.

3. Compare bitrate with sustained outbound bandwidth
Measure upload capacity from the VPS; a download-speed result does not answer whether the server can sustain its outgoing stream. Compare capacity with the configured total bitrate, including any primary and backup streams. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room and says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth. These are YouTube configuration recommendations; its reviewed guidance does not state a publication year. See Streaming tips.
-
Repeat the measurement near the time of an intermittent stall, rather than relying only on a single result from a different time.

Compare measurements with your VPS provider’s bandwidth graphs, if available, and keep timestamps so they can be lined up with YouTube and FFmpeg errors.
-
Check the configured video bitrate and whether a second stream or other outbound traffic consumes capacity.
YouTube lists 10 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. That is a configuration recommendation, not a finding about this VPS or a minimum guarantee. Confirm the settings for your actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and protocol in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
4. Verify the stream configuration
Compare the encoder’s actual output with the selected YouTube stream configuration and the requirements shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s error reference identifies unsupported formats and incorrect bitrate, audio/video stream count, resolution, and keyframe frequency as possible configuration errors. Do not assume that a process running means its media settings are acceptable.

5. Test the route without overreading traceroute
If encoder output is healthy and sustained upload capacity appears sufficient, gather route evidence from the VPS toward the actual configured ingest destination, where that destination is available. Record the time and repeat measurements during normal operation and during a stall.
Traceroute sends probes with limited time-to-live values to elicit responses from hops. Firewalls can filter those probes, and routers can limit ICMP replies. Therefore, missing hops or asterisks at an intermediate point do not by themselves prove that the media path is broken. The Linux traceroute manual describes these limitations. TCP-based tracing may help where ordinary UDP or ICMP probes are filtered, but use a suitable destination and port; a probe is evidence about its own path and replies, not a definitive test of media forwarding.
6. Change protocol only when the evidence supports it
A stalled player alone is not a reason to switch protocols. YouTube describes HLS as segment-based and higher latency than RTMP, with separate requirements such as HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Only change protocol when the encoder and YouTube stream are configured for that protocol and the observed error points to a protocol or configuration issue. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

The title does not specify the VPS provider, ingest hostname, FFmpeg command, stream settings, health messages, measured bitrate, or timing. It is not enough to diagnose the incident or establish Chennai-specific routing as the cause. If you suspect a provider-path problem, collect evidence that lets the provider compare the same period across systems:
-
Live Control Room health messages and timestamps.
-
FFmpeg stderr and the relevant command/configuration, with the stream key removed.
-
Whether encoder preview or local output remains healthy.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and the traceroute manual inform this diagnostic bundle; it is not a prescribed YouTube incident form. Consider a provider change only if repeatable measurements show that the current provider’s outbound capacity or path is the problem. The available evidence here does not identify or endorse a replacement host.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you see | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| YouTube reports an error while FFmpeg remains running | Match the health-message timestamp to FFmpeg stderr; investigate the specific error, stream configuration, and whether media is still being produced. |
| Local output or encoder preview is also faulty | Check the source, encoder errors, and CPU load before investigating the route. |
| Encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports trouble | Measure sustained VPS upload capacity and compare it with the total configured bitrate, then check the selected stream settings. |
| Traceroute has missing hops | Repeat and timestamp the trace; account for filtered probes and rate-limited ICMP replies before drawing conclusions. |
| Player stalls but the dashboard shows no clear cause | Collect synchronized dashboard, encoder, bandwidth, and route evidence. The symptom alone does not identify the failing layer. |
