For a panel of remote hosts, have everyone join a Zoom meeting, build the program in OBS, and send OBS’s output to Zoom with OBS Virtual Camera. If you also want to broadcast the meeting to YouTube or another supported destination, configure Zoom’s livestreaming separately: OBS-to-Zoom video and Zoom-to-platform livestreaming are two different signal paths.
Choose the signal path first
“Streaming with Zoom and OBS” can mean three different setups. Pick the one that matches what viewers or participants need to see:
| Goal | Signal path | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Put an OBS-produced picture into an interactive Zoom call | OBS Virtual Camera → Zoom | Remote hosts who need to speak and interact in the meeting |
| Send a Zoom meeting or webinar to a public livestream destination | Zoom meeting controls → enabled livestream destination | A Zoom call that should also be watched outside Zoom |
| Bring a third-party production into a Zoom Events webinar | Streaming software → incoming RTMP → Zoom Events | Eligible webinar workflows needing a produced feed |
The ordinary remote-panel workflow does not require an HDMI capture card: guests join Zoom on their own devices, and OBS Virtual Camera makes an OBS output available to Zoom as a webcam. Zoom’s broadcast hardware guidance is for an existing camera or switcher production system, not a minimum equipment list for every panel.
Set up a remote-host panel with OBS Virtual Camera
1. Assign meeting roles and responsibilities
- Have each host join the Zoom meeting as a participant. The meeting host can promote a participant to co-host during the meeting if they need help managing participants or recording.
- Keep livestream start and stop responsibility with the meeting host. Zoom says a co-host cannot start the livestream.
- Decide whether the Zoom call itself is the final destination or whether it also needs to go out to an external platform. That choice determines whether Zoom livestream settings are needed in addition to OBS.
Zoom’s co-host guidance does not establish a maximum video-panel size or guarantee capacity for any particular number of simultaneous video feeds. Confirm practical capacity against the account and setup you will use rather than treating the co-host role limit as a video limit.

- 【Wide Compatibility USB Capture Card】 Easily streams to Facebook, Youtube or Twitch. With the connection, this HDMI to USB C/3.0 video capture devices can be working on several Operating Systems and various software: Windows 7/ 8/ 10, Mac OS or above, Linux, Android, Laptop, Xbox One, PS3/PS4/PS5, Camera, DVDs, Set Top Box, Webcame, DSLR, Switch/Switch 2, TV BOX, HDTV, Potplayer/VLC, ZOOM, OBS Studio etc.
- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. Build the OBS picture
- In OBS, create a scene and add the sources needed for the finished composition. Arrange and check the program picture before sending it to Zoom.
- Choose the Virtual Camera output deliberately. OBS provides Program, Preview, Scene, and Source modes. Program is normally the finished output; if you use Studio Mode, Preview can reveal scene changes that are not yet intended for the audience.
- Do not assume that each Zoom guest automatically appears as a separate OBS source. The OBS Virtual Camera guide documents sharing OBS output as a webcam feed; it does not describe a per-guest Zoom capture integration. Choose a capture approach that suits your production and test it.
3. Start Virtual Camera and select it in Zoom
- In OBS, start the Virtual Camera.
- In Zoom’s camera settings, select OBS Virtual Camera.
- Check the video preview in Zoom. If possible, ask another participant to confirm what they see, including framing and scene changes.
OBS describes Virtual Camera as a way to share an OBS scene with applications that use a webcam, including Zoom. It sends video; it does not by itself configure the microphone or other sound going into the meeting.
4. Route audio as a separate job
Choose the microphone that should reach the Zoom participants, then configure any program audio you want them to hear. OBS’s video-call tutorial covers routing between OBS and call software, but the exact virtual audio-device setup depends on the operating system and selected devices; there is no single device recipe that applies to every computer.
- Monitor the call and program audio before the event so you can catch echo or duplicate monitoring.
- Keep audio intended only for an OBS recording or external stream out of the Zoom call if participants should not hear it.
- Test with a second participant or account. Confirm both the microphone and any shared program audio arrive as intended.
Broadcast the Zoom meeting to an external platform
If the goal is to send the Zoom meeting itself to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, or a custom destination, configure Zoom’s own livestream path. This is separate from choosing OBS Virtual Camera as Zoom’s camera.

- Check that the account has the relevant livestream feature enabled and that the intended destination is allowed. Account licensing and administrator controls can affect availability.
- For a custom streaming site, configure the stream URL and key in Zoom as directed by its custom livestream setup.
- During the meeting, have the host start the stream from the meeting controls. A co-host cannot start it.
- Verify the destination and the audience-facing video and audio before relying on the broadcast.
Zoom’s account settings determine which livestream destinations are available. Confirm this ahead of the event; do not assume the option appears on every account or that an administrator has not restricted it.

When an existing camera or switcher is already producing the show
For a studio that already outputs a finished program from cameras or a switcher, Zoom’s broadcast guidance describes a hardware capture path. It names the Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus for HDMI and the Inogeni SDI2USB3 for SDI, along with a USB audio mixer. These are examples for converting an existing production output for the streaming computer, not required purchases for a basic remote Zoom panel. Zoom also mentions an Anker USB-C hub for Mac streaming-computer connectivity where the needed ports call for one.
That guide’s broadcast configuration is one-way: Zoom cautions that “2-way communication is NOT possible with these settings.” The qualification applies to that production/broadcast setup, not to ordinary interactive Zoom meetings. If the production needs interaction, plan separate displays, microphones, speakers, and appropriate audio processing rather than expecting the one-way broadcast configuration to provide a conversation path.

Use incoming RTMP for an eligible Zoom Events webinar
Zoom Events provides a distinct option for integrating scenes from third-party streaming software into a webinar using incoming RTMP. Zoom’s support page states that this feature requires Zoom app version 6.2.0 or higher. Check eligibility and configuration for the specific Zoom Events setup; incoming RTMP is not a universal replacement for the OBS Virtual Camera workflow in a standard Zoom meeting.
Preflight and troubleshoot
Before the event
- Confirm whether the intended path is OBS into an interactive Zoom call, Zoom out to an external platform, or a production feed into a Zoom Events webinar.
- Check account livestream settings, approved destinations, and any administrator restrictions.
- Keep livestream start/stop duties with the Zoom host.
- Test the OBS output, camera selection, microphone, program audio, echo, and scene changes with another participant before the event.
If OBS Virtual Camera is missing or does not work
Follow OBS’s operating-system-specific troubleshooting rather than assuming one fix applies everywhere. OBS documents Windows installation, macOS extension approval, and Linux v4l2loopback considerations. Check the current OBS version and the relevant operating-system steps, then restart and verify the camera choice in Zoom.
If the video appears but sound does not
Treat audio as a separate routing problem. Recheck Zoom’s selected microphone, OBS and operating-system audio devices, and whether the intended program sound is routed to the call. Listen from another participant’s device to identify silence, echo, or duplicate monitoring.
