OBS Studio can loop a playlist of videos and layer a countdown over the picture, but its documented playlist loop does not automatically insert that countdown after every clip. Build the video loop in OBS, add a separate countdown source, and rehearse the transition logic before relying on it for a long broadcast. For 4K at 60 fps, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps as a typical video bitrate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
What you need to make the loop
- OBS Studio, with VLC installed so the VLC Video source is available.
- Local video files in the order you want them to play.
- A countdown prepared either as a rendered video clip or as a text/graphic composition.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and a scheduled or created encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection with room above the stream’s total bitrate.
The workflow has two distinct parts: OBS plays and encodes the program, while YouTube receives the encoder feed. YouTube’s setup guide covers creating the event and connecting an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Build the playlist and countdown in OBS
1. Prepare the clips and countdown
Choose the clip order and decide how long the gap should be. A rendered countdown clip is easy to preview as a standalone asset; a text or graphic countdown can be composed in OBS. The OBS documentation describes playlist looping and source layering, but does not establish an automatic method that inserts a countdown after every playlist item. You will need a separate transition mechanism and must verify it in rehearsal.
2. Add the video playlist
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the live program.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source.
- Open the source properties, add your video files in playback order, and enable Loop Playlist.
- Confirm playback and ordering. If you have only one repeating video, use a Media Source and enable its Loop option instead.
OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add the countdown layer
Add a media source for a rendered timer clip, or add text and graphic sources for a designed countdown. Place the countdown source above the video source in the Sources list so it appears over the picture. OBS explains source types and layer order in its Sources Guide.
A countdown as a separate scene is another possible composition, but the cited OBS guidance does not document an automatic switch from each playlist item to that scene and back. Do not assume that enabling Loop Playlist handles the switching.
4. Decide how transitions will be triggered
OBS’s documented playlist behavior alone does not say “play countdown after each item.” Arrange a separate production step to trigger the timer between videos, then verify that the method works for every clip, including the final item before the playlist repeats. Whether you use a manual cue or another automation method, test the actual transition rather than treating the layered countdown as proof that it will appear at the right time.

Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the OBS preview/feed and check the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room before making the event public.
- Use YouTube’s recommended lead time: arrange the encoder stream at least two hours before the event and start the encoder at least 15 minutes early.
See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow. Interface labels can change, so follow the labels shown in your account.
Set the encoder for 4K at 60 fps
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for 2160p at 60 fps gives a video bitrate range of 10–40 Mbps and identifies 35 Mbps as typical. These are recommendations, not guarantees that every viewer will receive 4K: YouTube transcodes live streams into formats suited to different devices and network conditions.
| Setting | Guidance for 2160p/60 |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate | 10–40 Mbps; 35 Mbps typical |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Latency | Normal latency; YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K |
Apply the settings in the encoder configuration available in your version of OBS, then confirm the resulting feed in YouTube Live Control Room. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for details beyond these 2160p/60 points.

Rehearse the entire loop and connection
Do a full-length rehearsal of the sequence you intend to broadcast, not just a brief preview of the first clip. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over total stream bitrate. At the typical 35 Mbps video recommendation, that means at least 42 Mbps available upload capacity if there are no other bitrate streams; 42 Mbps is the arithmetic result of adding 20%, not a separate published YouTube target. Leave additional room if audio or other outgoing traffic adds to the total.
- Check that clips start in the intended order and that the playlist repeats at the right point.
- Confirm the countdown begins after each intended clip, lasts for the planned gap, and is visible above the video.
- Listen across every transition for cut-off audio, overlapping sound, or unwanted silence.
- Check the final playlist item and the transition back to the beginning.
- Watch YouTube’s stream preview and health indicators while testing. YouTube’s streaming tips cover previewing and monitoring.
Troubleshoot common countdown and stream problems
VLC Video is missing from the source menu
OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video source to appear. Install VLC, restart OBS if necessary, and check the source menu again.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The countdown is hidden behind the video
In the Sources list, move the countdown source above the video source. OBS displays higher sources above lower sources.
The stream drops frames or YouTube reports connection trouble
Compare available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and restore the recommended 20% headroom. Check the encoder’s configured bitrate and connection stability; then repeat a rehearsal while watching Live Control Room’s preview and stream health.
The stream does not offer low latency
That is expected for 4K under YouTube’s encoder guidance: the low-latency option is unavailable, so a 4K stream uses normal latency.

The video reaches viewers below 4K
A 4K encoder feed does not guarantee 4K playback on every viewer’s device or connection. YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and networks.
