A YouTube stream key is an encoder credential, not the ID of a scheduled broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select the intended event under Create > Go live > Manage, check its stream settings, send the feed from your encoder, and verify that the preview appears on that event before clicking Go live. If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, bind the broadcast ID to the stream ID and verify the association with contentDetails.boundStreamId.
Stream key, stream, and scheduled broadcast: what each one identifies
- Scheduled broadcast: The event viewers watch. In the API, it is a
liveBroadcastresource with its own ID, title, schedule, and status. - Stream: The incoming audio and video feed and its delivery settings. In the API, it is a
liveStreamresource with its own ID. - Stream key: The credential configured in an encoder so YouTube can receive the feed. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
- Binding: The API association between a broadcast and a stream. The broadcast’s
contentDetails.boundStreamIdreports the stream currently associated with it.
Do not use a key’s label or key string to decide which event is selected. A stream key identifies the ingest configuration, while the scheduled event is selected separately in Studio or associated through the API.
Match the key to a scheduled broadcast in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, then choose Manage.
- Select the scheduled broadcast you intend to run. Check its title and schedule so you do not configure the encoder while viewing a different event.
- Open the event’s stream settings. Check the selected stream key and the stream URL shown in YouTube. In your encoder, put the stream URL in the server or ingest URL field and the key in the stream-key field. YouTube allows a custom key to be selected for reuse.
- Start the encoder and send the feed. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room for the selected event.
- Confirm that the preview is on the intended broadcast, then click Go live. If there is no preview or it appears on the wrong event, stop and recheck the selected event and the encoder’s URL/key pair before proceeding.
YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature can let viewers find an event in advance and receive reminders. That promotion does not make the key an event identifier: verify the event selection and its preview separately.
Match a broadcast and stream with the YouTube Live Streaming API
For API automation, keep the resource IDs and the encoder credential distinct:

| What you are identifying | API field or value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled event | liveBroadcast.id |
Identifies the broadcast resource. |
| Incoming feed | liveStream.id |
Identifies the stream resource and its ingest settings. |
| Current association | liveBroadcast.contentDetails.boundStreamId |
Shows which stream ID is bound to the broadcast. |
| Encoder authentication | Stream key and ingestion details | Values configured in the encoder; not the broadcast ID. |
- Retain or retrieve the intended scheduled broadcast and note its
liveBroadcast.id. - Retain or retrieve the intended ingest stream and note its
liveStream.id. - Call
liveBroadcasts.bindwith the broadcast ID asidand the stream ID asstreamId. - Read the broadcast resource and confirm that
contentDetails.boundStreamIdequals the intendedliveStream.id. - Configure the encoder with that stream’s ingestion settings and key. Check the stream status and broadcast preview before transitioning the broadcast to testing or live, as appropriate for your workflow.
A broadcast can be bound to one video stream at a time. A video stream may be bound to more than one broadcast, which can suit separate events at different times. Reuse depends on the stream resource’s current settings, including isReusable; do not assume every stream is reusable.
If the key is wrong or may have been exposed
If you suspect someone else has the key, reset it in Live Control Room: open the Stream tab, find Stream key, choose Reset, then copy the replacement into every encoder configuration that should use it. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. A reset changes the encoder credential, not the broadcast-to-stream association. After rotating it, check both the encoder configuration and the event’s stream selection or API binding.

Troubleshoot common matching problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder is sending, but the wrong scheduled event is open. | The event selected in Manage does not match the event you intend to broadcast. | Return to Manage, select the correct scheduled broadcast, and confirm its preview before going live. |
| YouTube receives no feed. | The stream URL and key may be in the wrong encoder fields, or the configured pair may not match the selected stream settings. | Use YouTube’s stream URL as the encoder server/ingest URL and the stream key as the key; compare both values with the selected event’s settings. |
| You expect the key itself to name or select the event. | The key is for ingest; the broadcast is a separate event/resource. | Select the event in Studio, or verify the resource association through boundStreamId in an API workflow. |
| The feed stopped working after a key reset. | The encoder still has the old credential. | Replace the stored key with the new one in the encoder, then confirm that the feed preview returns. |
| The API shows an unexpected stream association. | The wrong broadcast or stream ID may have been used during binding. | Check that id is the intended broadcast ID, streamId is the intended stream ID, and the resulting boundStreamId matches. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Matching an event in YouTube Studio or through the API is still the right approach when you are using your own encoder. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded prerecorded video streaming to YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
