You can start an internet radio station on YouTube by meeting the channel’s live-stream requirements, preparing a video-and-audio feed, and sending it through an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. Before broadcasting, clear the rights for every track and other included material in the territories where you plan to stream. YouTube’s setup tools do not grant those rights.
1. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current help guidance sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch rather than on air day. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
An active live stream receiving a copyright strike is among the reasons YouTube may restrict live-stream access. A station should not treat a song’s availability on another service, or ownership of a personal copy, as permission to stream it on YouTube. See YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.
2. Choose a radio format and an encoder
YouTube Live is a video livestream, so an audio-first radio program still needs a visual feed. An encoder combines the program audio with video or other visuals and sends the result to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder streaming for more advanced production; the encoder may be software or standalone hardware. Its instructions also cover using external audio and video hardware, but they do not require a particular encoder or radio-specific artwork.

Buy equipment only to meet a real production need. YouTube lists microphones among typical professional stream hardware, but an automated music-only stream does not need a USB microphone just because it is a radio station.
3. Clear the program’s rights before you broadcast
Rights are a separate requirement from channel setup and encoder configuration. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions place responsibility on the broadcaster for necessary rights to live and archived content, including music rights. The terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” They also require the provider to meet regulatory requirements in the Live Stream Territory, which may include licensing, registration, or notification.

What permissions apply depends on the country or territory and the exact music catalog and other material in the program. The platform’s ability to accept a stream does not establish that the catalog is cleared. Check the rights for the intended territories and account for both the live transmission and any replay you intend to keep. 4. Create the stream and connect your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Use the stream setup in Live Control Room to prepare the broadcast. The available encoder workflow is described in YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. The server URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the stream key identifies the stream connection YouTube accepts. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set the audio and video feed, then check the encoder’s connection. Choose settings supported by your equipment and connection. The cited YouTube guidance establishes the encoder workflow but does not prescribe radio-specific resolution, bitrate, or artwork settings, so do not assume a single setting suits every setup.
- Start a test broadcast before the real program. Use an unlisted test where appropriate, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, and confirm the watch page opens as intended. Check the result on mobile as well as in your production view.
- Listen and monitor while the test is running. Confirm that the audio is audible and stable, the visual feed is present, and the stream remains connected. Resolve problems before announcing the station or relying on the stream.
5. Test the internet connection and monitor the show
Your upload connection must handle the total stream bitrate, not merely the audio component. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That recommendation is a buffer for the connection; it is not a guarantee against outages or other network problems.

- Test at the same location and over the same connection you will use for the broadcast.
- Watch Live Control Room’s preview before going public and verify the public or unlisted watch page separately.
- Monitor both picture and sound during the show. A connected encoder does not by itself confirm that listeners can hear a clean program.
- Have a response plan for a dropped connection, encoder failure, or a silent or incorrect feed. YouTube’s tips recommend testing and monitoring; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
6. Set a realistic broadcast and replay schedule
Decide whether each show is a finite broadcast or part of a continuous station, and whether you need a replay. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one complete replay. If a complete archive matters, plan the broadcast length and replay continuity around that limitation instead of assuming one uninterrupted archive.
Rights planning applies to archived material as well as the live transmission. Make sure your permissions cover the use you intend, including whether the program will remain available afterward.

7. Understand YouTube live monetization
Depending on eligibility, YouTube may offer live revenue features such as ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Their availability is conditional, and YouTube says ads are not guaranteed to serve in every slot; do not forecast revenue on the assumption that each viewer or ad break will generate income. YouTube also says ads are turned off for externally embedded players using autoplay. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
