What Is Video Frame Rate? FPS Settings for Live Streaming

FPS is frames per second. Choose 30 for relatively still streams or 60 for fast motion only when your camera, encoder, connection and platform can support it.

FPS means frames per second: the number of video frames sent or displayed each second. For a live stream, 30 fps is a practical starting point for relatively still scenes, while 60 fps can make fast movement look smoother—if your camera, encoder, upload connection and platform can all sustain it. More FPS does not mean higher resolution, and it can require more bitrate and processing capacity.

What is video frame rate, and what does FPS mean?

Frame rate is the frequency at which a video sends or displays frames, measured in frames per second (FPS). At 30 fps, the video presents 30 frames each second; at 60 fps, it presents twice as many. The higher rate can make motion appear smoother, particularly when objects move quickly.

FPS and resolution describe different things. Resolution is the image’s pixel dimensions; frame rate is how often frames are sent. Increasing FPS does not increase the number of pixels in each frame. Twitch Help describes the distinction this way: “Resolution refers to the size of a video on a screen, and frame rate refers to how often animation frames are sent to Twitch.” Twitch Help’s Broadcasting Guidelines

Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?

There is no universal best setting. As a rule of thumb, try 30 fps for a talking-head stream, presentation or other relatively low-motion material. Try 60 fps for gameplay, sports or similarly fast movement when smoother motion matters and the whole streaming chain supports it. These are practical starting points, not categories prescribed for every creator by the platforms.

Setting May suit Check before choosing
30 fps Talking-head, presentation and relatively still scenes Platform bitrate guidance, stable upload capacity and the camera’s output mode
60 fps Gameplay, sports and other motion-heavy scenes Camera or capture-device support, encoder load, upload headroom, platform limits and the applicable bitrate guidance

Choose the highest frame rate your actual setup can deliver reliably, not simply the highest number in a settings menu. If your camera cannot capture the selected resolution-and-FPS combination, or your encoder or connection struggles with it, a nominal 60 fps setting will not solve the bottleneck.

How much bitrate does 30 or 60 FPS need?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance varies recommended bitrate by resolution, frame rate and codec. At 1080p, its current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these values:

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Ingestion codec 1080p at 30 fps 1080p at 60 fps
H.264 Minimum 5 Mbps; recommended 14 Mbps Minimum 6 Mbps; recommended 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 Minimum 4 Mbps; recommended 10 Mbps Minimum 4 Mbps; recommended 12 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees of a stable stream. The right target depends on the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate you select. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its bitrate guidance for the current table and other settings.

Higher FPS can increase capture, encoding and network demands. Keep upload headroom above the configured stream bitrate: Twitch Help’s public FAQ excerpt advises around 30% more upload capacity than the stream bitrate, using a 6 Mbps stream and 8 Mbps upload as its example. That is platform guidance, not a substitute for testing your own connection. Check Twitch’s current broadcasting guidance for your setup.

What settings and equipment should you check?

  • Camera or capture device: Check the exact model’s supported resolution-and-FPS combinations. One streaming guide notes that most webcams support 30 fps and some support 60 fps; do not assume a device supports 60 fps at every resolution. See the cited streaming guide.
  • Encoder: Confirm that your computer or hardware encoder can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec together. Watch for encoder overload or dropped frames during a representative test.
  • Upload connection: Run an upload speed test and leave capacity beyond the stream bitrate. A speed test is a snapshot; test the connection under the conditions in which you plan to stream.
  • Platform limits and key: YouTube Live lists frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Check the platform’s current rules before configuring a stream.

YouTube’s live encoder settings also recommend CBR encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval. Its guidance says to choose a reliable quality for the available connection, monitor stream health and test before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. As YouTube Help puts it: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube live encoder settings

How to test your frame rate before going live

  1. Set the intended resolution, FPS, codec and bitrate in your streaming encoder. If you are unsure, begin with YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection rather than forcing a manual mode.
  2. Check that your camera or capture device actually outputs that combination. Verify the model’s specifications and select a supported capture mode.
  3. Run an upload speed test. Make sure the connection has headroom above the stream bitrate; Twitch’s example is roughly 30% additional capacity.
  4. Make a private or otherwise non-public test using representative motion and audio. Include the same kind of movement, microphone use and scene changes you expect in the real stream.
  5. Review stream health and the recording or preview for dropped frames, stuttering, audio problems or encoder strain. If the test is unstable, lower the FPS or bitrate, reduce resolution, or address the limiting component before the public stream.

Common FPS problems and fixes

  • 60 fps is unavailable: The camera, capture device, selected resolution or encoder may not support that combination. Check the device’s supported modes and try a supported resolution or 30 fps.
  • Motion stutters or frames drop: The encoder or upload connection may be overloaded, or the selected bitrate may not be reliable on the available connection. Test stream health, leave more upload headroom, and reduce FPS or bitrate if needed.
  • Video looks less smooth than expected: Confirm that the capture device is outputting the intended frame rate and that the encoder and platform are receiving that rate. A setting selected in one part of the chain cannot make unsupported capture smooth.
  • Stream looks soft despite a higher FPS: FPS does not raise resolution. Check resolution separately, along with the bitrate recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate.

FPS for a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube stream

For a stream made from uploaded video rather than a live camera, the source video’s frame rate is part of what you upload. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, without re-encoding. Learn more at StreamNeo. This is relevant to prerecorded YouTube streams, not camera-based live streaming.

Does Twitch require one specific FPS?

Do not treat one FPS value as universal for Twitch. Twitch’s public help excerpts include both 25 or 30 fps guidance and a reference to Full HD typically being 1080p at 60 fps, but that does not establish a single setting for every streamer or content type. Check Twitch’s current guidance for your particular setup.
