Best 4K screen recording software depends on what you are recording: OBS Studio is the flexible choice for desktop capture and streaming, Camtasia suits tutorials that need editing in the same product, and NVIDIA ShadowPlay is designed for gameplay capture on compatible NVIDIA systems. No cited source establishes a universal performance winner.

Before choosing, define your target: Ultra HD (UHD) is 3,840Ă—2,160 pixels; DCI 4K is 4,096Ă—2,160. A 4K setting alone does not ensure native 4K capture or smooth 60 fps recording.

Which 4K screen recorder fits your workflow?

Software Best documented fit Important constraints
OBS Studio Flexible desktop capture and streaming across Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix; can also capture an external HDMI source through a capture device. Performance depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and GPU routing. OBS’s minimum requirements are not a performance guarantee. External-device HDR guidance is Windows-specific and requires 10-bit support. OBS requirements; GPU selection; HDR capture devices.
Camtasia Screen capture for tutorials or training, with editing in the same product. Its documented true 4K/60 path has specific display, frame-rate, encoder, and discrete-GPU requirements. Its cited recorder capability is UHD, not DCI 4K. TechSmith’s 4K/60 guidance; TechSmith’s 4K content guidance.
NVIDIA ShadowPlay Gameplay recording and instant replay on compatible NVIDIA systems. NVIDIA’s high-resolution and performance statements concern game capture; they do not establish ShadowPlay as an all-purpose screen editor. NVIDIA App; Supported ShadowPlay resolutions.

What does “4K” mean for a screen recording?

UHD, commonly called 4K for consumer displays, is 3,840×2,160. DCI 4K is 4,096×2,160, a wider frame. TechSmith’s Camtasia documentation distinguishes these dimensions and describes the recorder as capable of up to UHD on capable systems. Do not assume that a product setting labeled “4K” records DCI 4K, or that a 3,840×2,160 export proves the screen was captured at that native resolution.

Resolution and frame rate are separate targets. A workflow may record UHD at a lower frame rate, while a 4K/60 workflow must sustain both the pixel dimensions and 60 frames per second. Upscaling a lower-resolution capture changes the output dimensions but does not make the original capture native 4K.

Can OBS record in 4K?

OBS is a reasonable choice when you want configurable desktop or window capture, streaming, or a capture-device workflow. Its official requirements list Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 Big Sur or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland. These are baseline compatibility details, not a promise of smooth 4K recording. The requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, says performance needs vary considerably with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity and recommends the Auto Configuration Wizard.

Set up a test before recording a long session

  1. Open OBS and run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. The wizard can help choose settings; it does not guarantee 4K/60 performance.
  2. Add the source you actually need to capture, such as a display or window. For a console or other external HDMI source, use a capture device rather than treating the card as necessary for ordinary desktop capture.
  3. Set the output canvas and recording output to the intended dimensions, such as 3,840×2,160 for UHD. Choose the frame rate your workflow requires. OBS’s documentation does not prescribe one universal encoder or bitrate that guarantees 4K/60 across different computers.
  4. Make a short recording and inspect it for the intended dimensions, frame rate, smoothness, audio, and dropped frames before relying on a longer capture. If the recording stutters, lower the frame rate or resolution, simplify the scene, or select a more suitable encoder and test again.

GPU routing on Windows laptops

On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, and Windows 11, a multi-GPU system may run OBS and a game on different GPUs. OBS says the application can run on only one GPU at a time; if OBS uses integrated graphics while the game runs on the discrete GPU, Game Capture may fail, and performance issues can occur. Check Windows graphics preferences so OBS and the game use the appropriate GPU for the capture method. See the OBS GPU Selection Guide.

External HDR capture with OBS

OBS introduced HDR recording and streaming in version 28.0. For HDR from an external capture device, OBS’s August 2, 2022 guidance requires a supported 10-bit format such as P010 and limits the described external-device HDR workflow to Windows. It lists Elgato 4K X and Elgato 4K Pro among devices tested and known to work; that is not a blanket endorsement for every card or setup. Keep device firmware and drivers current, and check the OBS compatibility guidance for the exact workflow: Video Capture Devices with HDR support.

When is Camtasia the better choice?

Choose Camtasia when you want to record instructional screen content and edit it in the same product. TechSmith says Camtasia 2024 and later can record 4K plus 60 FPS screen content, but true 4K/60 depends on a specific configuration. Its guidance was updated October 11, 2024.

Requirements for Camtasia’s documented 4K/60 path

  • Set the recorder’s maximum frame rate to 60 FPS.
  • Select H.264 as the encoder.
  • Ensure the screen content refreshes at 60 FPS or higher.
  • Use a 4K monitor set to 60 Hz or higher.
  • Have a discrete GPU power the recorded monitor; TechSmith recommends NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or higher and current graphics drivers.

These are the conditions TechSmith documents, not a guarantee that every project will record or edit smoothly. TechSmith’s separate guidance, updated April 8, 2026, recommends a UHD display and local source storage for 4K work, and notes that an SSD can help. It also warns that lower-powered systems may have choppy playback and slow editing. The largest recommended editor canvas in that guidance is 3,840×2,160.

When is NVIDIA ShadowPlay the better choice?

ShadowPlay is the focused option for gameplay capture on compatible NVIDIA systems, especially if you want an instant-replay feature. NVIDIA describes Instant Replay as saving the last 30 seconds. The NVIDIA App page says manual recording can reach up to 8K HDR at 30 FPS or 4K HDR at 120 FPS “with minimal impact to performance”; that is NVIDIA’s product claim for its gaming capture workflow, not an independently measured comparison with OBS or Camtasia. NVIDIA also says RTX 40-series GPU owners can record AV1. Its support answer, updated August 6, 2025, lists 2160p/4K and 4320p/8K among supported resolutions.

What do I need to record 4K at 60 fps?

You need a recorder that supports the target dimensions and frame rate, a display and content refreshing at the required rate for screen capture, a suitable encoder and graphics hardware, and enough system capacity for the scene. For Camtasia, TechSmith’s documented path specifically requires H.264, 60 FPS capture, a 4K display at 60 Hz or higher, content refreshing at 60 FPS or higher, and a discrete GPU. For OBS, the cited guidance does not give a universal hardware recipe: CPU needs change with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and compatible system requirements do not guarantee recording capability.

Common 4K recording problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Recording stutters or playback is choppy The system cannot sustain the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity; editing performance can also be limited by the computer. Test a simpler scene or lower resolution/frame rate, review encoder choice, and confirm the hardware path. TechSmith notes lower-powered machines can have choppy playback and slow editing.
OBS Game Capture does not capture the game OBS and the game may be assigned to different GPUs on a multi-GPU Windows laptop. Use Windows graphics preferences to align GPU selection for the game and OBS, then test Game Capture again. OBS GPU Selection Guide.
External HDR capture is unavailable or not HDR The capture device may not support a 10-bit format such as P010, the workflow may not be Windows, or device firmware/drivers may be outdated. Check the device’s HDR format support, update firmware and drivers, and consult OBS’s HDR device guidance.
Output file is 4K but looks soft The source may have been captured below 4K and then upscaled. Check the original capture and display configuration; output dimensions alone do not establish native 4K capture.
Camtasia does not produce the expected 4K/60 capture One or more documented conditions may be missing, including H.264, a 60 FPS recorder setting, a 4K/60 Hz display, 60 FPS-refreshing content, or discrete graphics. Verify each requirement in TechSmith’s 4K/60 guidance.

Does 4K screen recording require a capture card?

No, not for capturing the computer’s own desktop or a software window. A capture card is relevant when the source is external HDMI, such as a console. For OBS HDR capture from that external source on Windows, the device must support a 10-bit format such as P010; OBS’s tested-and-known-working list includes Elgato 4K X. TechSmith also recommends local source media for Camtasia editing and says an SSD can help, but its documentation does not specify a model, capacity, or guaranteed speed improvement.

Can I keep a pre-recorded 4K video live on YouTube?

Screen recording software captures what is happening on a computer or game; it does not by itself keep an uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer can be off; it does not stream from a camera. Review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules before streaming material you do not own or have permission to use.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running without a computer or home connection left on. Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I record my screen in 4K if my monitor is 1080p?
