For YouTube Live, start with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a video bitrate matched to your ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 or 14 Mbps for 1080p30. In OBS, choose an output resolution and frame rate your computer and sustained upload can reliably handle. Local recording is a separate workflow: use its own quality settings when needed and record to MKV to reduce the risk that an interrupted recording corrupts the whole file.
These are starting points, not a universal preset. YouTube’s figures are platform recommendations, while OBS’s recording values are encoder-specific examples; neither guarantees smooth performance on every connection or computer.
Best OBS settings for a YouTube livestream
Use YouTube’s live ingest recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following video bitrates are YouTube Help’s published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not minimums, upload-file targets, or results from a hardware test. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide also publishes minimum rates; the recommended values below should not be treated as a guarantee that a connection can sustain them.
| Live output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Set the stream encoder and rate control
In OBS, open Settings → Output. Simple output mode is a reasonable uncomplicated start; choose an available encoder and a stream bitrate appropriate to your YouTube output. In Advanced mode, set streaming rate control to CBR and use the bitrate for your selected codec and output from YouTube’s table. Encoder names and availability depend on your operating system and hardware. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; it recommends RTMPS.

Use a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. For SDR, use Rec. 709 color space. YouTube’s audio guidance recommends stereo at 128 kbps and AAC or MP3 audio. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that any particular microphone, encoder, or network will produce a problem-free broadcast.
Choose resolution and frame rate in OBS
Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace OBS uses to arrange sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to the stream or recording. Choose the output for the viewing quality you want and can sustain. A 1080p canvas can, for example, be scaled to a lower output if bandwidth or system performance requires it.
Select 30 or 60 fps according to the material. Sixty frames per second can help preserve fast motion, but OBS notes it may be substantially more demanding. Documentary footage with mostly interviews, narration, or measured camera movement may work well at 30 fps; sports, fast demonstrations, or other rapid motion may benefit from 60 fps if the computer and upload connection can keep up. These are editorial starting points, not platform rules.

How to configure OBS for a local recording
A recording saved to your computer for later upload should not automatically inherit the live stream’s bitrate. In Settings → Output, switch to Advanced to configure a separate recording encoder and quality target. A separate encoder—or a recording quality setting other than Same as stream—can use additional system resources, so test it alongside your intended stream setup.

Choose a recording quality target
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings guide gives these encoder-specific baseline examples for quality-based recording. They are useful starting ranges, not universal prescriptions. In these controls, a lower number means higher quality and typically larger files.
| Encoder | OBS example rate-control setting |
|---|---|
| NVENC | CQP, CQ 16–23 |
| x264 | CRF 16–23 |
| AMD | CQP 16–23 |
| QuickSync | ICQ 16–23 |
OBS also distinguishes the recording presets Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable, and Lossless. Higher-quality modes can increase file size or resource use. OBS’s guide estimates that lossless recording can produce files of about 7 GB per minute; that is an approximate guide figure, not a universal file-size prediction.

Record to MKV, then remux if necessary
Choose MKV as the recording format when available. OBS recommends it because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. If an editor or upload workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s remux option to convert the completed MKV recording to MP4. OBS describes this container-safety rationale in its Standard Recording Output Guide.
Use different targets for live ingest and finished uploads
A locally recorded file that will later be uploaded has a separate bitrate target from a livestream. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations for SDR include 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps at high frame rates; at 720p, the corresponding figures are 5 Mbps and 7.5 Mbps. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR uploads. These are upload-encoding recommendations, not live ingest settings: do not substitute them for the live bitrate table or assume they are OBS recording-quality values.

Choose an encoder and test the actual setup
OBS says modern hardware encoders can reduce CPU work and deliver very good quality with minimal performance impact, but earlier generations may produce lower quality at a given bitrate. There is no universally best choice between NVENC, x264, AMD, or QuickSync: choose one available on your system, set the appropriate controls for the stream or recording workflow, and check OBS statistics and logs during a representative test. If using one encoder for streaming and another for recording, test both running together.

- Set up a representative scene. Include the sources, motion, and audio you expect to use during the real broadcast; a static scene may not reveal issues that appear with movement.
- Check your sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test and select a live quality that the connection can maintain with headroom. A nominal speed result alone does not establish that an unstable connection can hold the selected bitrate.
- Run a preflight stream. Verify picture, audio, synchronization, and stream health before an event. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- Watch OBS performance indicators. Check for rendering or encoding pressure while the test is active. Make changes and retest instead of assuming a setting will behave the same on every computer.
The YouTube bitrate and keyframe figures above are official operational recommendations; OBS’s recording ranges are documented examples. OBS documentation pages cited here include material dated 2021–2024, so labels and encoder availability can change between versions.

OBS reports rendering or encoding pressure
Lower the Output (Scaled) Resolution or test at 30 fps rather than 60 fps. Simplify resource-intensive scenes or reduce the size of costly sources. OBS notes that scene composition uses GPU resources and complexity can affect performance. Avoid lowering Base (Canvas) Resolution as the first fix: OBS says doing so complicates source layout. It remains an option in severely resource-constrained situations.
Viewers report buffering but OBS renders normally
Investigate sustained upload stability and whether the selected bitrate fits the available bandwidth. Run another speed check, lower the output bitrate or quality if needed, and test the stream before the event. A higher bitrate does not compensate for an unstable connection; monitor YouTube stream health once live.

The local recording looks worse than expected or stops safely only sometimes
Check which recording mode and quality target are selected, and whether a separate encoder is active. Higher-quality recording can increase resource demand and file size. Prefer MKV for the active recording, then remux to MP4 if needed; an abrupt stop is precisely the case in which MKV is less likely to corrupt the whole file.
