HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is a way to deliver live or on-demand video and audio over HTTP. It works by encoding media, dividing it into segments, and publishing playlists that tell a player which segments to request. When multiple quality versions are available, the player can switch between them as network conditions change.
How HLS works, step by step
- Encode the source. A live feed or finished video is encoded into one or more renditions—versions at different resolutions, bitrates, or quality levels. The suitable codecs depend on the intended devices and authoring requirements; there is no single codec that applies to every HLS stream.
- Divide the media into segments. The encoded audio and video are packaged as smaller media files. Common HLS segment formats include MPEG-2 transport stream (
.ts) and fragmented MP4, often using.m4ssegments. - Publish playlists. Text playlists describe the available media and where the player can fetch it. HLS playlists use the extended M3U format and commonly have the
.m3u8extension. - Host the files. The playlists and media segments are made available as HTTP resources, usually from a web server or content delivery network (CDN).
- Let the player request and present media. A compatible player reads a playlist, downloads the relevant segments, and presents them in sequence. If the stream offers multiple renditions, the player may move between them as conditions change.
The key idea is that the player fetches ordinary web resources: playlists that describe the media and segments that contain it. Serving those files does not, by itself, require a special HLS server module.
What the two main playlists do
Master or multivariant playlist
A master playlist points to the available media playlists and describes the variants, such as their bandwidth and resolution. Current Apple guidance uses the term multivariant playlist; “master playlist” remains common in older descriptions and usage.
Media playlist
A media playlist describes the segments for one rendition. The player follows it to find the media files to request. In a stream with several quality options, each option can have its own media playlist.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These roles are distinct: the multivariant playlist offers choices, while a media playlist lists the segments for a particular choice.
How adaptive bitrate playback works
HLS can support adaptive bitrate playback when the publisher provides multiple encoded renditions. The player estimates what the connection and playback conditions can sustain, then selects or changes rendition while fetching segments. This lets the stream trade picture quality against available bandwidth.
HLS does not make a single video file automatically change quality. Multiple renditions must be encoded and offered, and the player must support switching. The exact selection and switching behavior depends on the player, so adaptation is possible rather than guaranteed on every device or client.

Live HLS and on-demand HLS
Video on demand
For video on demand (VOD), the presentation is already complete and its playlist describes the finished media. In RFC 8216, EXT-X-PLAYLIST-TYPE:VOD identifies a playlist that does not change.
Live streams
For a live event, the media playlist can grow as new segments become available. A sliding live playlist can also remove older segments as its viewing window advances. A live player periodically reloads the playlist to discover newly available segments. The playlist behavior depends on how the stream is authored; live does not mean that every playlist works in the same way.
Apple’s authoring guidance specifies EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME in each linear live media playlist and calls for matching content duration across audio and video playlists. These are authoring requirements in that guidance, not a reason to assume all existing HLS streams use identical playlist structures.

Where HTTP and CDNs fit
HLS delivers playlists and segments through HTTP, the same general protocol used to request web resources. A web server or CDN can host and deliver those files. A CDN can distribute requests across its infrastructure, but HLS itself is the playlist-and-media delivery approach, not a particular hosting company or a guarantee of a specific playback result.
Because the client requests segments, it can fetch media as playback proceeds rather than requiring one continuous connection to a single specialized streaming server. The player’s ability to choose among variants and the available renditions determine whether quality can adapt.

HLS formats, containers, and CMAF
HLS can use more than one media packaging format. MPEG-2 transport stream (.ts) is a common segment format; Apple’s authoring guidance also lists fragmented MP4, including .m4s and .mp4. Which codec, container, and HLS features work depends on the chosen encoding and the client. A file being an HLS segment does not guarantee that every device can decode it.

CMAF is a segmented-media format that can be used with both HLS and MPEG-DASH. Its switching sets can provide alternative tracks that switch at fragment boundaries. CMAF and HLS are not synonyms: CMAF concerns media formatting and packaging, while HLS defines playlist and delivery behavior.
HLS specification: published standard and evolving draft
RFC 8216, published in August 2017, is the published HLS specification. Apple’s 2026 update points to a newer second-edition Internet-Draft. Treat features described only in that draft as evolving draft material, rather than as settled requirements of the published RFC. Apple’s 2026 notes discuss preload hints for encryption keys and date-range schedules for server-driven interstitial insertion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What HLS does—and does not—guarantee
- It provides a delivery structure. Playlists identify media segments and, where offered, alternate renditions.
- It can support live and on-demand playback. Playlist behavior differs between a completed presentation and a changing live event.
- It can enable adaptive quality. That requires multiple renditions and suitable player behavior; HLS alone does not create alternate quality versions.
- It does not ensure universal compatibility. Device support depends on the player, codecs, container, and features used.
- It does not specify one universal segment duration. Segment length depends on the authoring and playback configuration; historical examples should not be treated as a current rule for every stream.
- It is not the same thing as a CDN. HLS describes how playlists and media are organized and delivered; web servers and CDNs can host the resources.
Keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running
HLS explains how compatible players fetch segmented media from playlists. It is not, by itself, a way to keep a YouTube channel broadcasting around the clock. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded recordings as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the playback in the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
