To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a personal channel or one for a business or other name, give it a clear identity, and publish a useful first video. You can record with a phone; you do not need to buy a camera or qualify for monetization before you begin.
Choose who the channel represents
You need a YouTube channel to upload videos, comment, or make playlists. Before creating one, decide whether it represents you personally or a business, documentary project, or other name.

YouTube notes that supervised experiences may limit channel creation. If you cannot find the create option or are using a supervised account, check YouTube’s current channel-creation instructions rather than assuming the account is broken; menu wording can change.
Create the channel and make it understandable
- Sign in to YouTube with your Google Account. Open YouTube’s channel management or create controls and follow the prompts for the channel type you chose.
- Choose a picture, name, and handle. Use an identity that viewers can recognize and that fits the subjects you intend to cover. The handle is the channel’s distinct identifier.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Customization. On the Home tab, you can arrange a channel trailer, featured video, and channel sections. Under Profile, you can set the profile picture, banner, watermark, name, handle, description, and site links.
- Write a short description. Tell a first-time visitor what kinds of videos the channel offers. Add a banner or other design assets when useful, but do not delay publishing just to make them professionally polished.
Choose a first format you can make well
YouTube supports both longer videos and Shorts. Pick the format that fits the subject and the way you can produce it: a documentary subject may need room for context, while a focused moment or short explanation may work as a Short. There is no universal format that guarantees growth, and the available guidance does not establish a required upload schedule.

For a first upload, choose a specific question or story rather than trying to explain an entire field. For example, a documentary channel might begin with one person, place, event, or archival object, then make the video’s scope clear in its title and opening. Treat that as an editorial starting point, not a formula for views.
Plan and record with the equipment you already have
YouTube Help says, “All you need to get started on YouTube is a mobile device.” A phone is a legitimate starting camera; upgrade only when you can identify a limitation in the work you are making. A standalone camera may cost more, weigh more, and require a more involved setup.

Before recording
- Choose a quiet location with light that lets viewers see the subject.
- Keep an outline or script nearby so the recording stays focused.
- Check what appears in the frame, especially if recording at home.
- For a landscape HD video, YouTube’s mobile guidance recommends horizontal 16:9 framing. This is a useful starting point, not a requirement for every kind of video.
While recording on a phone
- Use the rear camera when practical, turn off notifications, and check focus and exposure before you start.
- Place the speaker close enough to the microphone for clear speech. Good light and intelligible sound usually matter more to a beginner’s recording than buying a more expensive camera.
- Listen to a short test recording. If the built-in microphone cannot capture speech clearly at the distance your setup requires, consider an external microphone.
Optional upgrades, only when they solve a problem
- Audio: A camera’s onboard microphone may need the speaker within three to four feet for best audio. A directional shotgun microphone can suit longer-range natural sound; a wireless lavalier can attach to a speaker recording at a distance. Before buying, check that the microphone has a connection compatible with your camera or phone, including any required adapter.
- Lighting: Window daylight or outdoor light can be enough. A two-point setup, soft lights, or a camera-mounted light are options for particular filming conditions, not prerequisites.
- Stability: A phone mount or tripod can make framing easier, but you can start without one if you can position the phone securely.
Publish a first video, then improve the next one
Use YouTube’s Create flow to upload a longer video or create a Short. Check the title and the details shown to viewers before publishing. Afterward, note what was difficult to plan, record, or explain, and use that experience to improve the next video. The available guidance does not establish a posting cadence or promise a particular level of reach.
Understand when monetization can begin
Creating a channel does not automatically make it eligible for payment. As of YouTube’s official criteria accessed on 2026-10-03, the expanded YouTube Partner Program entry path in eligible countries or regions requires 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. This level may allow earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to the relevant feature requirements.

For ad revenue sharing, YouTube states a threshold of 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. YouTube also requires compliance with its monetization policies, availability in the creator’s country or region, and an account review. Reaching a threshold does not guarantee approval. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for your account’s status and current eligibility, since availability and criteria can change.
