If content caching is not working on Mac, first check System Settings > General > Sharing > Content Caching on the cache Mac. Confirm it is on, set to cache the type of content your devices need, and wait for its status indicator to turn green. Then check whether client devices have discovered it, whether the Mac is awake, and whether network addressing, storage, or management policy is blocking it. A cache that has not served a request yet is not necessarily broken.
Check the Content Caching settings and status
On the Mac intended to host the cache, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing, turn on Content Caching, then open its information or options panel. macOS labels can vary by version.
Use the status indicator as an initial clue:
- Green: caching is on.
- Yellow: the service is unavailable or starting or stopping.
- Dark gray: data is moving.
- Light gray: caching is off.
If the indicator is yellow, wait to see whether startup or shutdown finishes. If it is light gray, enable the service. If it is green, continue with client discovery and activity checks rather than assuming that the cache is serving requests.
Choose the content mode clients need
Content Caching has three modes. Choose the one that matches what local Apple devices are meant to retrieve:

| Setting | What it caches |
|---|---|
| All Content | Shared Apple software and app downloads, plus users’ iCloud content. |
| Only Shared Content | Software and app content distributed by Apple. |
| Only iCloud Content | Users’ iCloud items, such as photos and documents. |
Apple says iCloud cache data is received, stored, and transmitted encrypted; the cache cannot decrypt it. Turning off iCloud caching immediately removes cached iCloud data.
Fix a Mac content cache not showing up to clients
Apple devices discover nearby caches automatically through a lookup service. After changing cache settings, restart a client device if you want it to look for the cache immediately. Without a restart, discovery can take time.
A client that has not found a cache yet may use another available cache or download content from Apple instead. That fallback means a delayed discovery can look like a cache failure even when the service is available. If only one client is affected, restart that device and allow discovery before changing the cache host or deleting data.

Make sure the cache Mac is available
Content Caching works only while its Mac is awake. Check the status indicator and the Mac’s power or sleep behavior before investigating advanced settings. Apple points to the caffeinate command-line utility for keeping a headless Mac awake; use it only if appropriate for your setup and macOS version.

Apple’s documented requirement is that each content cache use either a local IP address in RFC 1918 private space, or a non-RFC 1918 local address identical to its public IP address. Caching is unsupported when a non-RFC 1918 local address differs from the public address.
Apple lists these private ranges:
10.0.0.0–10.255.255.255172.16.0.0–172.31.255.255192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255
For a managed or multi-subnet network, check whether configuration is intentionally limiting which clients can use the cache. Settings such as Local Subnets Only, listen ranges, peer or parent cache configuration, and DNS discovery can affect reachability or discovery. There is no universal router or firewall change that fixes every layout. Ask the network administrator to review the site’s routing, DNS, and policy if the cache is available but clients still cannot find or use it.

Check cache storage, volume, and limit
In the Content Caching options, check the selected cache volume, configured size limit, and storage used. macOS may remove content to make room when the chosen limit or available volume space is reached; eviction alone does not mean the cache is corrupt. If several volumes are available, Apple lets the administrator select another one. Moving an existing cache temporarily stops caching while its data moves.
An external SSD is an option only if you need a separate volume for cache storage. It is not required, and adding one will not fix discovery, addressing, sleep, or activation problems.
Confirm whether the cache is serving requests
Open Activity Monitor and select its Cache view. Check Data Served and Data Served From Cache; Apple says nonzero served values indicate the cache is working. If the Cache view is missing, enable Content Caching and reopen Activity Monitor.

For administration, Apple documents these commands in AssetCacheManagerUtil:
settings, status, canActivate, andisActivatedto inspect settings and state.activate, deactivate, andreloadSettingsto manage service state or reload configuration.
Apple also documents flushCache, flushPersonalCache, and flushSharedCache. Check Apple’s command-line guide for the installed macOS release before using commands operationally; the guide’s displayed publication date is October 27, 2021, and command availability or behavior may vary by release. Advanced logs are available under the com.apple.AssetCache subsystem in Console or through the log command. Follow Apple’s documented settings and avoid changing undocumented plist values.
Check for management restrictions
On an organization-managed Mac, a configuration profile or declarative management setting may prevent Content Caching from activating or may control how it behaves. A user-level toggle cannot override a policy restriction. Ask the organization’s administrator to inspect the applicable management settings.

How do I clear the Mac content cache?
Reset or flush the cache only after checking service state, discovery, host availability, network addressing, storage, and management policy. Clearing cached data does not make clients discover the cache, keep the Mac awake, correct an unsupported address, or override a restriction. Flushed content must be fetched again as needed.
To reset the cache using macOS settings, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Sharing > Content Caching, open its options, and use the reset control. For administrative workflows, Apple documents the flush commands listed above; verify the syntax and availability for the installed macOS version before running one.
Or let it run in the cloud
Content Caching is for Apple software, app, and iCloud content on local Apple devices. If your separate goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different service: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
