These are three related but distinct steps—not one automatic switch. Keep your YouTube stream key private.
Choose how to connect StreamElements and OBS
SE.Live integrates StreamElements tools into OBS. Alternatively, you can configure OBS to stream to YouTube with your YouTube stream key and add a StreamElements overlay as a browser source. The official instructions describe both approaches but do not provide a controlled performance comparison.
- Use SE.Live if you want StreamElements chat and activity docks integrated into OBS. Current documentation lists Windows support and macOS beta availability.
- Use standard OBS configuration if you prefer not to install SE.Live or want to configure YouTube as OBS’s streaming service directly. You can still add the StreamElements overlay browser source.
For current installation requirements, check StreamElements’ SE.Live installation and connection guide before installing, since compatibility can change.
Install SE.Live and connect accounts
- Check OBS and operating-system compatibility. StreamElements’ current getting-started documentation specifies OBS Studio 31.x or newer for Windows and describes macOS availability as beta.
- Close OBS and install SE.Live. Reopen OBS after installation, then sign in using the StreamElements menu.
- Connect YouTube in SE.Live. Follow the account-connection prompts in the plugin.
StreamElements’ YouTube setup tutorial also shows the alternative: choose YouTube or YouTube Gaming as OBS’s stream service and enter the stream key shown in YouTube’s Encoder setup. StreamElements Support warns, “never share your stream key!” Treat it like a password; do not display it in a recording, screenshot, or public chat.

Set up your OBS scene and inputs
A scene determines what viewers see and hear. The StreamElements tutorial demonstrates adding an Audio Input Capture source and a Video Capture Device source in OBS. These are ordinary OBS input steps, not StreamElements requirements: add the microphone, camera, or other inputs your production needs, and check that their meters respond before going live.
Create an overlay and add it to OBS
- Choose or create a YouTube overlay. In StreamElements, open the Themes Gallery and choose a YouTube theme, or select an overlay you already made. The tutorial suggests a static option for optimal CPU performance.
- Adjust its elements. Edit AlertBox settings and hide countdown, starting-soon, or frame layers that are not relevant to your broadcast.
- Copy the overlay URL. In OBS, select the scene where the graphic should appear and add a Browser source. Paste the URL into the source URL field.
- Set the browser-source dimensions. The tutorial uses 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high as its example. Match the dimensions to your intended scene; this example is not a universal resolution requirement.
- Position and verify it. Place the browser source in the OBS source stack where it should appear, then preview the scene and trigger or inspect overlay elements before streaming.

Enable the StreamElements chatbot on YouTube
The chatbot is optional and must be authorized separately from the overlay.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community.
- Add or approve the StreamElements chatbot URL as a moderator, following StreamElements’ YouTube chatbot setup guide.
- Make the broadcast public and live so the bot can join.
- Check the chat using Live chat if you do not see bot messages in Top chat; Top chat may hide them.
Some StreamElements loyalty features are not currently available on YouTube accounts, including giveaways, Stream Store, viewer queue, and media requests. Do not assume that every feature shown in a Twitch-oriented onboarding flow will work on YouTube.

Check the setup before going live
- Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube channel and that the stream key is not exposed in the scene or on screen.
- Preview the scene to check that the browser-source overlay loads, is positioned correctly, and does not cover important video content.
- Check microphone and camera inputs if you added them, and verify the intended audio source is active.
- If using the chatbot, confirm the broadcast is public and live and check Live chat for its messages.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
SE.Live does not appear in OBS
Check that OBS was closed during installation, reopen it, and confirm your system and OBS version meet StreamElements’ current requirements. The documented Windows minimum is OBS Studio 31.x; macOS is listed as beta.
OBS will not connect to YouTube
Check that the correct YouTube account is connected or that the YouTube stream service and key are configured in OBS. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings before broadcasting.

The overlay is blank or missing
Confirm that the OBS Browser source contains the correct overlay URL and belongs to the scene you are previewing. Check that the source is enabled and not hidden behind an opaque source, then reopen its properties and verify its dimensions.
The chatbot does not join or messages are not visible
Confirm that the StreamElements bot has been added as a moderator in YouTube Studio, and that the broadcast is public and live. Switch from Top chat to Live chat when checking for messages.
