Oracle Cloud YouTube Streaming Bandwidth Costs for a 24/7 Channel

A 30-day 10 Mbps stream uses about 3.24 TB of outbound payload; see how OCI’s 10 TB free egress allowance compares with 1080p and 4K examples.

A 24/7 YouTube stream’s outbound bandwidth depends mainly on its sustained video bitrate. At a constant 10 Mbps, it sends about 3.24 decimal TB in a 30-day month; at 12 Mbps, about 3.89 TB. Oracle currently lists the first 10 TB per month of public internet egress as free, so either example fits within that allowance if other workloads in the tenancy do not use it. Higher-bitrate 4K examples can exceed the allowance. These figures cover the stream sent from your cloud encoder to YouTube—not YouTube’s delivery to viewers.

How to estimate monthly bandwidth for a continuous stream

Multiply the stream’s sustained bitrate by the number of seconds in the billing period, then convert the resulting bytes to decimal terabytes. For a 30-day month, a continuous 1 Mbps stream sends approximately 0.324 TB. A useful shortcut is:

Monthly payload in decimal TB ≈ sustained bitrate in Mbps × 0.324

This estimates video payload at a constant bitrate. Actual metered transfer can differ with bitrate variation, protocol overhead, billing-period length, and the provider’s measurement and rounding rules.

What the YouTube bitrate examples mean for OCI egress

YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For 2160p, its recommendations include 35 Mbps at 30 fps and 50 Mbps at 60 fps. The table applies the 30-day estimate to those rates.

Sustained stream bitrate Approximate payload in 30 days Approximate amount above 10 TB Illustrative overage using Oracle’s dated example
10 Mbps (1080p30 recommendation) 3.24 TB 0 TB $0
12 Mbps (1080p60 recommendation) 3.89 TB 0 TB $0
35 Mbps (2160p30 recommendation) 11.34 TB 1.34 TB About $11.39
50 Mbps (2160p60 recommendation) 16.20 TB 6.20 TB About $52.70

The transfer figures use decimal units (1 TB = 1,000 GB), 30 days, constant bitrate, and one shared 10 TB allowance. The illustrative overage is not a current quote: it applies an inferred rate from Oracle’s North America example, described below.

How Oracle’s free allowance and example pricing apply

Oracle’s current VCN pricing page lists the first 10 TB per month of public internet egress as free. Oracle’s Always Free documentation also describes 10 TB per month of outbound transfer as an Always Free resource. Treat this as a shared allowance for the relevant tenancy, not 10 TB reserved solely for the YouTube stream: other outbound workloads may consume some or all of it.

Oracle Cloud Economics gives a North America example for 50 TB per month, with the first 10,000 GB free and an OCI cost of $0.47 per hour. The example is dated December 6, 2024 and assumes 730 hours per month. Multiplying $0.47 by 730 gives about $343 for the example month; dividing that by the 40,000 GB above the free threshold implies roughly $0.0085 per GB. On that historical, inferred basis, 1.34 TB over the threshold is about $11.39, and 6.20 TB is about $52.70.

That arithmetic is an illustration based on Oracle’s dated example, not a separately quoted per-GB rate or a reliable forecast for every region. The current region-specific overage price and billing aggregation and rounding details are not established here. Check Oracle’s live price list or calculator for a purchasing decision.

What OCI bandwidth is—and is not—being counted

The relevant transfer is the encoder’s outbound feed to YouTube over the public internet. For this stream-to-platform path, estimate OCI egress from the feed bitrate; do not multiply it by the number of YouTube viewers. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into output formats for different devices and networks, so viewer playback delivery is handled by YouTube. This estimate does not model YouTube’s distribution costs.

Keep network headroom separate from the egress calculation. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% extra upload bandwidth so the connection can carry the outgoing stream reliably. That is connection-capacity guidance, not an extra video stream to add automatically to the metered payload estimate. Test with realistic audio and motion, and monitor stream health before relying on a continuous feed.

Bandwidth is only one part of a 24/7 OCI bill

The table estimates public internet egress only. A complete cloud cost depends on details not specified by the bitrate calculation, including the source region, compute instance shape and runtime, storage, IP and network resources, and any other services or outbound workloads. Price those separately; the available inputs do not support a responsible all-in OCI monthly total.
