1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeither Wirecast nor OBS Studio is proven by the available official documentation to be more reliable for uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube streaming. Choose based on the production tools, operating system, and budget you need, then test the whole setup—computer, network, encoder, recording, monitoring, and recovery—under realistic conditions. For a documentary channel, plan for YouTube’s archive and rewind limits as carefully as for the live broadcast: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Costs and plan differences
OBS Studio
OBS is free and open source. Its flexibility is useful if you want to build a scene-based production with plugins or scripts, but you are responsible for configuring and maintaining the workflow.
Wirecast
Telestream’s Wirecast pricing page lists these prices as of 2026-10-03. They are publisher-listed prices at that time, not a guarantee of the price or billing terms offered when you buy.

| Plan | Monthly billing | Yearly billing | Documented plan features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wirecast Studio | $59/month | $34/month | Unlimited live camera sources, screen capture, GPU-accelerated encoding, two Rendezvous remote guests, and a four-slot maximum multiview. |
| Wirecast Pro | $79/month | $42/month | Adds NDI output, cloud multistreaming, up to seven remote guests, ISO recording, PTZ control, sports-production tools, and multitrack audio recording. |
Wirecast’s plan features may matter if your documentary stream needs remote guests, multiple camera sources, or a more integrated production workflow. Do not treat a feature list or vendor description of encoding efficiency as independent evidence of 24/7 reliability.
Which production workflow fits your channel?
Choose OBS when customization and cost matter most
OBS provides Studio Mode for previewing scenes and sources, Multiview for monitoring up to eight scenes, and plugin/script extensibility through its API, Lua, and Python. It is a natural fit for a channel comfortable assembling and maintaining its own scenes and tools.
Choose Wirecast when its integrated production tools fit the show
Wirecast documents camera and graphics workflows, remote guests, direct YouTube delivery, and recording to disk. Studio and Pro do not have identical feature sets, so compare the plan against the specific production features you need rather than assuming every capability is included in both.

Choose by host machine and workload, not just the operating-system label
OBS lists Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 Big Sur or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. Its requirements page is dated 2021, so verify requirements for the current OBS release. OBS cautions that compatibility does not guarantee adequate streaming performance: encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect demands.
Wirecast’s specifications list macOS Sequoia 15 or macOS 26 Tahoe, and Windows 10 version 1809+ or Windows 11 (the page names 21H2 and 24H2). Its minimum baseline includes an Intel sixth-generation-or-newer or AMD Ryzen 1000-series-or-newer CPU, or Apple M1+, 8 GB RAM, and a DirectX 11-capable Intel HD GPU with 2 GB video memory. Telestream warns this baseline may be insufficient for 1080p or higher, or 60 fps; its professional recommendations are higher. Check the current release notes and system specifications for exact compatibility with your intended version and workload.
What matters more than the encoder for a 24/7 stream?
A continuous broadcast depends on the complete chain: the production machine, power, network connection, encoder configuration, local recording, monitoring, and a plan for restarting or recovering after failure. Neither application removes those dependencies when it runs on your own computer.

- Allow upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity for the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. This is guidance for planning capacity, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.
- Test the actual show. Run the intended resolution, frame rate, scenes, sources, audio, and recording configuration before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. A light test scene does not establish that a complex documentary production will perform the same way.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and analytics, and keep an eye on audio and video while the stream is running. Network disruption can break a stream.
- Verify local recording. Confirm that a local archive is being written and growing as expected; do not assume that a live YouTube broadcast guarantees a complete replay.
- Plan for interruption. Decide who or what will notice a failure and how the stream will be restarted or resumed. Add backup power or network arrangements only if they suit your site and have been tested; no setup can be assumed to work without verification.
YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. For an all-day or 24/7 stream, treat the local recording as essential if you need a dependable copy; do not promise viewers a complete YouTube VOD.
YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This affects viewers trying to rewind the live broadcast, independently of whether OBS or Wirecast is encoding it.
Practical archive choices
- If a complete replay matters, maintain a local recording and check that it is usable.
- If you need YouTube replays, consider whether the broadcast can be divided into shorter sessions. A stream below the documented threshold is not a guarantee of successful capture, so retain the local backup.
- Tell viewers if rewind or replay availability is important to the viewing experience; do not imply continuous DVR or a complete VOD for a stream that exceeds YouTube’s stated limits.
Set up a decision and test plan
- Define the production. List required cameras, graphics, remote guests, scenes, audio sources, outputs, resolution, and frame rate. Match Wirecast’s plan features or OBS’s scene and extension workflow to that list.
- Check the exact host requirements. Compare the current software release requirements with the computer you will use, including the demands of the full production rather than minimum compatibility alone.
- Configure the YouTube encoder connection. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room and the selected application’s YouTube setup. YouTube notes that first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable and verify access before a planned launch.
- Run a representative test. Check preview, audio/video quality, stream health, upload headroom, and local recording growth with the real scenes and workload.
- Write down recovery actions. Identify how to detect a failed broadcast, restart the encoder or connection, and confirm the stream is back. Do not treat a successful test as proof of unattended multi-day uptime.
- Decide how the archive will work. Set a local recording plan and determine whether your YouTube broadcast needs to be split into sessions to serve replay or DVR needs.
Common problems and what to check
The stream stops or YouTube reports poor stream health
Check the Live Control Room’s stream health, the computer’s workload, and available upload capacity. Compare sustained upload headroom with YouTube’s recommendation, then test again with the actual production. Network disruption can break the stream; neither encoder choice guarantees continuity.

The broadcast is live, but no complete replay appears
Check the stream duration first. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local archive as backup, and plan shorter YouTube sessions if replays are necessary.
Viewers cannot rewind as expected
For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable. This is a platform limitation, not a Wirecast-versus-OBS setting.
The software runs, but video or audio quality degrades
Re-test at the intended resolution and frame rate with the full set of scenes and sources. OBS notes that performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; Wirecast likewise cautions that its minimum hardware baseline may not suffice for higher-resolution or 60 fps work. Monitor audio and video rather than relying only on a successful connection.
