Yes. Vimeo can loop a prerecorded video during a live event and simulcast that event to YouTube. In Vimeo’s event production tool, set the video playback behavior to Loop, then add YouTube as a destination—either by connecting your YouTube account or by entering YouTube’s RTMP URL and stream key. The exact start steps depend on which destination setup you use.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A Vimeo Advanced or Premium account, or an Enterprise account with the Events feature, for the relevant live-event and simulcast features. See Vimeo’s live-event requirements.
- A YouTube account verified for livestreaming. Vimeo lists this as a YouTube requirement in its YouTube simulcast instructions.
- The prerecorded video you want to play. Vimeo’s prerecorded-video playback guidance explains how to add it to an event scene and set its playback behavior.
How to loop a prerecorded video and send it to YouTube
- Create a Vimeo event from your video or add the video to an event. From the video’s settings page, choose Stream live to create an event with that video preloaded, or create an event and add the video to a scene. Vimeo documents both approaches in How to stream my video as a live event.
- Set the video to loop. In the event production tool, select the video and choose Loop for its playback behavior. Vimeo says it restarts from the beginning when playback reaches the end. The option is described in Playback prerecorded videos during your Vimeo event.
- Add YouTube as a destination. In the event’s Destinations settings, choose either the direct YouTube integration or a custom RTMP destination. For the direct integration, connect the YouTube account and enable it. For RTMP, copy YouTube Studio’s stream URL and stream key into Vimeo’s RTMP destination fields. Follow Vimeo’s YouTube simulcast instructions for the destination setup.
- Start the event and check YouTube’s control room if using RTMP. With the direct integration, enabling YouTube and going live on Vimeo starts the simulcast. If you configured a scheduled YouTube event through RTMP, you may also need to select Go live in YouTube Live Control Room before viewers can see it. Vimeo notes that some destinations require their own start action.
- Check captions before the event. Vimeo says captions or subtitles included in the uploaded video are not displayed when the video plays back live. Plan another way to provide captions if the audience needs them.
Direct YouTube integration or RTMP?
| Method | Setup | Starting the broadcast | Destination capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct YouTube integration | Connect the YouTube account in Vimeo’s event Destinations settings, then enable YouTube. | Going live on Vimeo starts the simulcast. | Up to 10 integrated destinations per event, according to Vimeo’s simulcasting guidance. |
| Custom RTMP | Copy YouTube Studio’s RTMP URL and stream key into Vimeo’s RTMP destination fields. | A scheduled YouTube event may require a separate Go live action in YouTube Live Control Room. | Up to 20 custom RTMP destinations per event, according to Vimeo’s simulcasting guidance. |
Choose the direct integration when you want to connect the account and start the simulcast from Vimeo. Use RTMP when setting up the destination with YouTube’s stream URL and key, and make sure to check YouTube Live Control Room for any separate start action.
What viewers should—and should not—expect
This workflow sends a Vimeo live event to YouTube. Vimeo’s setup documentation does not establish whether YouTube labels the broadcast to viewers as prerecorded, or how YouTube will classify a particular broadcast. Do not promise a specific viewer-facing label or classification.
Also, the video’s embedded or uploaded captions will not appear during Vimeo live playback, according to Vimeo’s playback guidance. Check any separate captioning options you plan to use before the event.
