Yes, you can stream a playlist containing both MP4 and MKV files to YouTube with FFmpeg—but the extensions do not tell you whether the files are compatible. The concat demuxer expects matching streams, codecs and time bases. Inspect the files first; if their streams differ, convert them to a common profile before streaming.
Why MP4 and MKV extensions are not enough
MP4 and MKV are containers: wrappers that can hold different video and audio streams. Two files with different extensions may contain compatible streams, while two files with the same extension may not. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires the listed files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases, and warns that differing layouts or inaccurate duration metadata can cause problems. That is why -c copy is not a compatibility fix. Stream copy passes encoded packets through without decoding, filtering or encoding them; it is fast and avoids re-encoding loss, but it cannot repair mismatched streams or apply filters. It can also fail if the selected output container cannot carry the input streams. FFmpeg explains these limits in its streamcopy documentation.
Check the files before making the playlist

Inspect every file with
ffprobe(included with many FFmpeg builds) or another media inspector. Compare the number of video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats and audio parameters.Special offer. Look for mismatches that matter to the concat demuxer: different stream counts or types, codecs, or time bases. Do not assume files are compatible because they play in a media player.

Check whether the selected output format can carry the streams you plan to copy. If compatibility is uncertain, test a short playlist before committing to the full broadcast.
FFmpeg’s online documentation may reflect a newer revision than your installed binary. Check the documentation for your version and confirm supported options with that build.

Create a concat-demuxer playlist
Make a UTF-8 plain-text file, for example playlist.txt, with one entry per line in the documented concat format:

file '/media/clip-three.mp4'Use paths that resolve on the machine running FFmpeg. For simple paths, a typical input invocation is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt ...The ellipsis is intentional: the complete output options depend on the input streams, FFmpeg build, chosen YouTube ingest protocol and target profile. The -safe 0 option allows paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe subset. Use it only with a playlist you control; do not feed it an untrusted playlist. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the installed version’s syntax and directives.

Choose stream copy or normalize the files
Use stream copy only when the inputs and output suit it
If the files have compatible streams and the output muxer can carry them, map the intended streams explicitly and try stream copy. This avoids decoding and re-encoding, but it does not make incompatible codecs, time bases or layouts match. FFmpeg also notes that stream copy cannot apply filters and may be unsuitable when the target container lacks required information.
Normalize mismatched files before streaming
If the files differ in relevant stream parameters, the dependable route is to preprocess or transcode them to a shared profile, then build the playlist from the normalized files. A concat filter is another option when re-encoding is needed; FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media distinguishes that filter-based approach from the concat demuxer’s stream-copy-oriented use. Pick a profile that all files can meet, including consistent video and audio streams, and verify that real-time encoding can keep up on your machine.

Set up YouTube Live output
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For a conventional broadly compatible setup, H.264/AAC in an FLV output is common, but confirm your FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and that the stream settings in Live Control Room match your encoder. Reference H.264 bitrates published by YouTube
These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not independent measurements; the figures below are from its guidance accessed 2026-10-03.

YouTube also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio, square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its full resolution and frame-rate table is on the encoder settings page. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably; a published recommendation does not guarantee your network can hold it.

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the stream settings and copy the stream URL and key for the intended ingest setup. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing these settings.

Enter the URL and key in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public command, or share screenshots that reveal it. Reset it if it is exposed.

Before the broadcast, test a representative section of the playlist, including typical motion and audio. Check that the stream reaches YouTube and that the picture, sound and transitions behave as expected.

Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event. If health warnings appear, check the encoder output, connection stability and whether the configured bitrate and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance.
Troubleshooting common failures
