AzuraCast’s radio-video-stream Liquidsoap example is the direct route for sending an AzuraCast station to YouTube Live with a looping video and an optional currently-playing-song overlay. It attaches an RTMP output to the station’s audio workflow. This is an advanced custom configuration, not a built-in, supported one-click feature: you will need a YouTube server URL and stream key, a video file and TTF font in station media storage, and a restart of broadcasting after adding the script.
What you need before you start
- An existing AzuraCast station whose composed radio output is working. AzuraCast uses Liquidsoap as the AutoDJ layer that generates and manipulates station audio; the example adds the YouTube RTMP output there. See the AzuraCast Liquidsoap documentation.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and permission to create or schedule a live stream.
- A video file for the visual loop and a TTF font for the optional Now Playing text. The example expects these in the station media library; its documented example uses a folder named
videostream. - Comfort editing station-specific Liquidsoap configuration and checking its application log if the script fails.
The repository describes AzuraCast 0.19.0 or a later Rolling Release as its minimum, but that is not a guarantee of compatibility with every current installation. AzuraCast updates can change the bundled Liquidsoap version, and custom scripts may then fail to parse or launch. Check the current script and its instructions against your installed release before applying it.
1. Create the YouTube live stream and copy its credentials
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from its setup details. YouTube’s encoder instructions are to enter both into the encoder configuration before starting: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the associated stream or channel. Put it only in the intended destination configuration, and do not paste it into public posts or screenshots.
YouTube handles the final publishing step in Live Control Room: for a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for its preview, then select Go live.
2. Prepare the video and Now Playing assets
Upload a suitable video loop to the station’s media library, using the videostream folder expected by the example unless you adjust the script’s path. Upload a TTF font as well if you want the current song information rendered over the video. The video and font are operator-provided assets; the example repository also includes a sample video loop, but you must configure the files and paths for your station.

3. Add the Liquidsoap example to AzuraCast
- Open the station in AzuraCast and go to Broadcasting → Edit Liquidsoap Configuration.
- Obtain
video_stream.liqfrom the radio-video-stream repository and paste or import it into the bottom custom configuration field, following the repository’s installation directions. - Customize the script for your station. In particular, set the station directory, YouTube RTMP destination using the server URL and stream key, and the font specifications. Confirm that the video and font paths match the media you uploaded.
- Save the configuration and use AzuraCast’s restart-broadcasting notice. Confirm that the station returns online before checking YouTube.
The project describes itself as an example for power users, provided as-is without active support or warranty. Treat it as custom code, not a guaranteed-compatible AzuraCast feature.
4. Confirm the stream in YouTube Live Control Room
After broadcasting restarts, check the scheduled stream’s preview in Live Control Room. If YouTube receives the encoder feed, review the picture and audio there, then click Go live when ready. For a stream already configured for immediate publishing, follow the corresponding start controls shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer broadcasts.

AzuraCast script or desktop encoder?
The AzuraCast-native example keeps station audio and its video loop together in the server-side broadcast workflow, but depends on custom Liquidsoap code and can be affected by software updates. A separate desktop encoder can accept an audio source and build a video output with more flexible scenes and graphics, but it adds another application and an operating machine to keep running. The cited AzuraCast and YouTube instructions do not require a desktop encoder; the choice depends on whether you prefer editing Liquidsoap or operating a graphical production setup.

Troubleshooting the AzuraCast-to-YouTube route
Broadcasting will not restart after adding the script
A Liquidsoap parsing or launch error may follow a change in the bundled Liquidsoap version or a script customization mistake. Inspect the station’s Liquidsoap application log, compare the script with the current repository instructions, and correct the incompatible code. If needed, temporarily remove the custom code to restore the station’s normal broadcast, then test the script against the installed release before trying again.

YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Check that the destination uses the correct YouTube server URL and the stream key for the stream open in Live Control Room. Confirm that AzuraCast broadcasting restarted successfully and that the configured RTMP output is running. Do not share the key while troubleshooting; replace it in YouTube if it has been exposed.
The loop or Now Playing overlay is missing
Verify that the video and TTF font are in the station media library, that the configured station directory and file paths match their actual locations, and that the script’s font settings point to the uploaded font. Review the Liquidsoap log for a file or configuration error.

Copyright, monetization, and archive limits
Streaming a station’s audio to YouTube does not establish that the operator has the necessary rights to broadcast every recording or display associated artwork. Resolve music, recording, and visual rights for the channel and territory before going live. YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, but that does not establish eligibility or rights clearance for a particular station or catalog. Keep the under-12-hour archive qualification in mind when planning long-running broadcasts.
