If other viewers or devices hear sound, troubleshoot playback. If the replay itself is silent, trace the audio through OBS or your console capture setup, then make a local test recording before streaming again. A finished silent replay is not guaranteed to be recoverable.
First determine where the sound disappears
- Rule out playback on your device. Check the YouTube player’s speaker and mute controls, device volume, selected audio output, and browser or app. Try another device or ask another viewer to check the replay. The official guidance reviewed does not identify a special YouTube control that restores missing archive audio.
- Identify which audio is missing. If the microphone is audible but game sound is not, focus on game capture, application routing, console output, or the capture card. If the microphone, game, and all other audio are silent, start with OBS’s selected sources and output configuration.
- Watch the relevant OBS mixer meter while game sound is playing. OBS meters indicate source volume. No movement suggests the sound is not reaching that OBS source; movement means check mute, level, and output-track assignment. The correct track depends on your configuration, so do not assume a particular track number.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains the mixer controls and recommends recording a session with your usual setup and listening to the file before going live.
If OBS’s meter does not move
Work upstream from the source: confirm the game is producing sound, identify the intended capture method, and check operating-system or console routing. The right OBS source depends on whether you are capturing a PC game directly or receiving console audio through a capture device.
Windows PC game or application capture
OBS Studio’s Application Audio Capture Guide describes per-application capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. It also says OBS Studio 30.1 added audio capture to Game Capture and Window Capture sources. Depending on your installed OBS version, open the game or window source properties and enable “Capture Audio (BETA),” or add an Application Audio Capture source and select the game or app.

When using Application Audio Capture sources, OBS cautions that Desktop Audio should be disabled to avoid capturing the same sound twice and creating an echo. If an app is incompatible with that capture source, OBS describes routing its audio through a virtual audio cable and adding the cable as an Audio Input Capture source. Treat that as an advanced workaround; it is not a routine requirement to buy new hardware.
macOS capture
OBS’s macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide describes different methods by OBS and macOS version: OBS Studio 30 with macOS 13 (Ventura) or later can use a macOS Audio Capture source for desktop or selected application audio, and the macOS Screen Capture Source also captures audio. For OBS 28 and 29 on macOS 13 or later, the guide specifies the Screen Capture Source. Older macOS versions require additional software for desktop-audio capture according to that guide. Because the guide is dated April 19, 2022, check its current instructions against the versions installed on your Mac.

Console and capture-card audio
If a capture card is involved, confirm that OBS is receiving the intended device and that the console sends a format the device supports. Elgato’s capture-device troubleshooting guide says its devices take stereo (2.0) PCM and do not support bitstream, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, Dolby Atmos, or the other listed formats. Its recommended console settings vary by model and generation: the guide recommends Linear PCM for the documented PlayStation configurations, stereo/uncompressed output for the documented Xbox configuration, and Stereo on Switch if Automatic fails and Surround prevents some sounds from being captured correctly. Follow the instructions for your exact console and capture-device model rather than applying a setting across all hardware.
Also check how headphones are connected. Elgato documents cases where a headset connected to a PlayStation controller or Switch headphone port prevents game audio from being sent over HDMI. Its OBS setup instructions differ by operating system: Windows may capture the Elgato device automatically when it is added, while macOS requires an Audio Input Capture source with the capture device selected.

If the OBS meter moves but the replay is silent
Sound reaching a mixer source is not by itself proof that it is included in the stream output. Check that the source is not muted, raise its fader if necessary, and verify that it is assigned to the output track used by your streaming configuration. Then make a short local recording and listen to that file. If the local recording is also silent, keep troubleshooting OBS’s output configuration before starting another live stream.
If the local recording has sound but a new YouTube stream does not, test with representative audio and movement before the next event, then monitor stream health and any messages while live. YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” The reviewed page displays no publication date.

Can you restore audio in an existing silent replay?
Do not count on it. The reviewed YouTube archive guidance explains archiving and recommends keeping a local backup, but does not say that audio missing from an archived stream can reliably be restored afterward. If you have a separate local recording with sound, you can use that as your source for editing or a new upload; it does not repair the original live replay.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive-duration qualification, not a statement about audio failures. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
