Does Hardware Encoding Lower the Power Cost of 24/7 OBS Streaming?

Hardware encoding can shift OBS encoding work off the CPU, but only a matched wall-meter test can show whether your 24/7 setup uses less electricity.

Sometimes, but not reliably enough to promise a lower electricity bill. Hardware encoding can sharply reduce the CPU work needed to encode an OBS stream, yet the computer’s total power draw also depends on its GPU, scene rendering, frame rate, background tasks and hardware. A 2015 OBS study found very different energy results across its test conditions, so the dependable answer for your setup is to measure whole-system electricity under your actual workload.

What hardware encoding changes—and what it does not

Software encoding with x264 uses the CPU to compress video. Hardware encoders—including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) and Apple VideoToolbox—use supported media-encoding hardware instead. OBS says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move encoding work off the CPU and onto a specialized component. That can free CPU capacity, but it does not prove that the entire computer uses less electricity.

For example, NVIDIA describes NVENC as a fixed-function encoder separate from its graphics and CUDA cores. That tells you where the encoding work happens; it is not a measurement of the power drawn by the computer at the wall. AMD, Intel and Apple encoder availability and behavior likewise depend on compatible hardware, software and drivers. Check the OBS Project’s Hardware Encoding guidance for encoder support and its image-quality caveat: older hardware-encoder generations may produce lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate.

Why lower CPU use does not guarantee lower power

OBS still has to render the scene

Encoding is only one part of streaming. OBS composites and renders scenes, and the load can vary with scene and source count, filters, resolution, frame rate and other programs using GPU resources. A simple still image and an animated scene are not equivalent workloads. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance discusses these resource demands; its System Requirements page also notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.

The rest of the computer affects the meter

CPU and GPU power management, the encoding hardware, displays and attached equipment, background applications, and the work happening during the stream all contribute to total draw. If hardware encoding lowers CPU use but increases work elsewhere—or lets a component run at a different power state—the whole system’s consumption may not fall. A 24/7 stream makes any sustained difference more consequential, but it does not make the difference predictable without a measurement.

What the published OBS energy test found

A 2015 study by Simon Fraser University researchers compared OBS with x264 and NVENC while streaming and recording a 1080p game benchmark. The tests used a 3,500 kb/s constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, at 30 and 60 frames per second. The authors measured processor use and average energy consumption for those particular runs.

Study condition Reported result How to interpret it
30 FPS, x264 OBS used nearly 37% CPU; system power rose by about 100 W over the study’s baseline. A result for the study’s equipment and gaming workload, not a general x264 power penalty.
30 FPS, NVENC Energy consumption was described as nearly identical to baseline. The paper did not give a numeric saving percentage in this finding.
60 FPS, NVENC Encoding increased energy consumption by almost 16%. A separate condition showing that hardware encoding did not mean lower energy in every test.

The findings illustrate why CPU-use reductions cannot be converted directly into a universal power saving. They are historical measurements on a particular system, not a benchmark of current hardware or a forecast of an all-night stream’s bill. The study does not establish a percentage or dollar saving that applies to your computer.

How to measure your own OBS streaming cost

For a useful comparison, measure cumulative energy for the complete computer and attached equipment at the wall. A plug-in electricity usage monitor with cumulative kWh tracking can do this. It measures the system as a whole, not the encoder in isolation.

  1. Choose the real workload. Use the scene, sources, resolution, frame rate and background applications you expect to run during the 24/7 stream.
  2. Keep conditions matched. Run equal-duration trials with the same workload and change only the encoder if possible. Compare x264 with a hardware encoder your system supports.
  3. Record cumulative kWh. Note the meter’s starting and ending readings for each run. Use a duration long enough for the reading to be meaningful; equal durations make the comparison easier.
  4. Calculate the difference. Subtract each run’s starting reading from its ending reading, then compare the resulting kWh. This is whole-system energy for each trial, not isolated encoding energy.
  5. Apply your electricity rate. Multiply the measured kWh difference by the rate applicable to your location and billing arrangement to estimate the cost difference for the measured period. Scale only if the workload and conditions remain representative.

Your local tariff and actual workload determine the cost estimate. The 2015 study’s figures should not be substituted for your meter reading.

Which encoder should you choose?

  • Compatibility: Confirm that your hardware, operating system, OBS build and drivers support the encoder. OBS lists NVENC, AMF and QSV on Windows and Linux; Apple VideoToolbox behavior differs between Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Consult the OBS hardware-encoding guidance for current platform details.
  • Whole-system energy: If your aim is a lower bill, compare wall-meter kWh under your actual stream conditions rather than inferring energy use from CPU load or an encoder’s design.
  • Image quality: Compare output at the bitrate you intend to use. OBS cautions that earlier hardware encoder generations may deliver lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate.
  • Headroom and stability: Consider the encoder alongside OBS rendering, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity and competing GPU work. A path that reduces CPU pressure may still need tuning if rendering or another resource becomes the bottleneck.
