HandBrake can prepare a video file for a 24/7 YouTube broadcast, but it cannot broadcast or loop the video itself. Convert the file with a suitable YouTube-oriented preset, then send it to YouTube Live with a separate live encoder that supports looping and recovery—or use a cloud service that handles the continuous stream.
What HandBrake does—and what it does not
HandBrake transcodes a source video into a new file. It does not send a live feed to YouTube, keep a stream running, or provide the looping and reconnection behavior needed for continuous broadcasting. For a DIY setup, you need a separate live encoder, a connection with sufficient sustained upload bandwidth, and a YouTube Live stream configured to receive the feed.
For a YouTube-oriented file starting point, HandBrake’s Web > Creator presets are designed for video-hosting services and produce MP4 with H.264 video and AAC stereo audio. Choose a preset that matches your intended output resolution and frame rate, and check the resulting file rather than assuming a single preset suits every source. HandBrake’s official presets describe the available options.
Convert the video in HandBrake
- Open the source. Load your recording in HandBrake and select a preset under Web > Creator that fits the intended resolution and frame rate. Keep the output’s dimensions appropriate to the source; upscaling does not restore detail that is not present.
- Choose how to handle frame rate. Preserve the source frame rate where practical. HandBrake’s Constant Frame Rate (CFR) option makes the output use exactly one frame rate throughout. Peak Frame Rate (PFR) caps higher-rate portions while allowing lower-rate portions to remain lower. These file-encoding choices are not a substitute for configuring your live encoder’s output frame rate. See HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation.
- Use Web Optimised for an MP4 file when useful. The option moves the MP4 container header to the beginning of the file, commonly called fast start, which can help web delivery. It does not turn the file into a live stream. HandBrake explains the option in its Web Optimised documentation.
- Encode and inspect the result. Play the converted file through, checking both picture and audio before using it as a live source. If the result has missing sound, a wrong aspect ratio, or visible quality loss, revisit the source, preset, and output settings before broadcasting.
HandBrake’s quality and bitrate controls affect the file it creates; they are not YouTube Live’s ingest bitrate settings. Its documentation explains the distinction between Constant Quality and Average Bitrate in Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate. The command-line reference is relevant if you automate file conversion, but automation still does not perform live transmission.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure the separate YouTube Live encoder
After the file is ready, load it into a live encoder that can play or loop media and send a continuous feed. YouTube’s current live guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These are live-ingest settings, separate from HandBrake’s file conversion settings. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance while configuring the encoder.
Live bitrate examples
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 live bitrate recommendations, not measurements of a particular connection or HandBrake export. The recommendations were current in YouTube Help when accessed in 2026.

Choose a live quality your connection can sustain reliably, and leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube’s networking advice recommends 20% above the stream’s bitrate. Test the stream and monitor its health rather than relying on a speed test alone. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube’s streaming tips.
Do not carry these live settings over to HandBrake’s file export as though they were the same requirement. For uploaded files, YouTube’s separate recommendations include MP4, H.264, AAC-LC/Opus/Eclipsa Audio, fast start, and encoding at the recorded frame rate; they are not a replacement for live CBR and keyframe settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Make the DIY stream suitable for continuous operation
A successful short test does not establish that a broadcast will stay live indefinitely. Before relying on a 24/7 setup, confirm that the chosen encoder can loop or schedule the media and what it does after an interrupted connection. The exact controls and recovery behavior depend on the encoder; verify them in that product’s current documentation. Keep the system and network available, check YouTube’s stream health, and test the complete playback and reconnect path before depending on it.
- Use video and audio that you have the rights to stream. A file that HandBrake can convert is not automatically cleared for YouTube broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and copyright requirements for your material before going live.
- For long-term operation, plan for encoder, computer, power, and network interruptions; do not assume HandBrake or a fast-start MP4 will recover a live stream.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely distinction to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The video converted, but YouTube is not live | HandBrake creates a file; it does not transmit to YouTube. | Open the file in a separate live encoder and configure YouTube Live’s ingest URL and stream key through YouTube’s encoder setup. |
| The live stream disconnects | The encoder or network may not sustain the feed, or the encoder may lack the needed recovery behavior. | Check YouTube stream health, lower the live output to a reliably sustainable setting if necessary, leave bandwidth headroom, and verify the encoder’s reconnect and loop behavior. |
| Video stutters or drops frames | The selected live bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the system may not sustain the chosen output. | Test at the intended resolution and frame rate, use YouTube’s recommended settings as a reference, and choose a quality the connection can maintain. |
| The picture or audio is wrong in the converted file | The file’s source, preset, frame-rate handling, or audio output may not match the intended use. | Play the HandBrake output before broadcasting; adjust the conversion and verify the new file’s picture and sound. |
| Expecting Web Optimised to make the stream continuous | Web Optimised changes MP4 layout for fast start; it does not loop or broadcast. | Use a separate live encoder or a cloud streaming service for continuous transmission. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded video kept live without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo handles the continuous stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts, and streams to YouTube only. The stream runs without a computer or home connection staying on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
