To show Super Chat pop-ups in an OBS broadcast, configure a YouTube Super Chat alert in an alert provider such as Streamlabs, then add its widget URL to OBS as a Browser Source. Test the alert in the OBS preview before relying on it live. A pop-up alert is not the same as a chat box or a permanent message history.
Before you set up the OBS overlay
- Confirm that YouTube Live Chat and Super Chat are available for your channel and stream. YouTube says some channel or stream restrictions disable these features. YouTube’s Super Chat guidance describes Super Chats as paid, highlighted and pinned chat messages during live streams and Premieres.
- Check that your channel is eligible to stream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. A stream or channel marked Made for Kids can have live chat and Super Chat disabled. YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance explains these limits.
- Decide whether you want an arrival notification or an ongoing display of chat. An alert is triggered by an event; it does not promise that a Super Chat will remain on screen indefinitely.
Set up a YouTube Super Chat alert in Streamlabs
- Open Streamlabs and configure its Alert Box for YouTube. Select the Super Chat alert and customize the presentation, such as its layout, image or animation, sound, font, and duration. The available controls can change; consult Streamlabs’ alert setup instructions for its current workflow.
- Use Streamlabs’ test controls to trigger a sample Super Chat alert. This lets you check the chosen visual and sound settings before adding the widget to OBS.
- Copy the Alert Box widget URL. Providers may call this an Alert URL, Overlay URL, or Widget URL.
Add the alert URL to OBS
- Open OBS Studio and select the scene where the Super Chat alert should appear.
- In the Sources panel, choose + and add a Browser source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Super Chat Alert.” OBS describes third-party alerts as overlays embedded through Browser Sources; its alert guidance says, “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” See OBS’s widget instructions.
- Paste the Streamlabs widget URL into the Browser Source URL field. Set the width and height to suit your stream canvas and the space reserved for alerts, then confirm the source.
- Trigger another test from the provider dashboard. In the OBS preview, confirm that the alert appears in the right place, at a readable size, with the intended animation and sound.
- If the alert should appear in more than one scene, add the Browser Source to each scene that needs it. A source added to one scene is not automatically present in every other scene.
OBS’s Browser Source method does not require a Streamlabs plugin. Streamlabs also offers a plugin route, but its widget must be added to each desired scene. OBS lists Streamlabs and StreamElements as overlay providers; the setup described here follows Streamlabs’ documented YouTube Super Chat workflow.
Choose the right display: alert, chat box, or message history
For a pop-up when someone sends a Super Chat
Use the Alert Box setup above. It is intended to notify viewers of events as they happen.
For continuously visible chat
Add a chat overlay or chat box instead. OBS distinguishes Alerts, which show event notifications, from a Chat Box, which displays stream chat. Decide how much screen space to give chat and how much message history viewers should see.

For a replay or lasting record
Do not treat an alert overlay as an archive. YouTube’s live-chat display is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Its instructions for embedding live chat require an iframe and a matching embed domain; that is not a plug-and-play OBS alert URL. See YouTube’s live chat guidance.
Plan around YouTube’s 24/7 archive limit
A continuous stream is not guaranteed to produce one complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. If preserving a complete archive matters, plan and verify your recording setup rather than assuming the live broadcast will be saved in full. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot a missing or unreadable Super Chat alert
