For a stable 24/7 prerecorded YouTube Live stream, use YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations—not its video-upload settings—and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Set constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and test with representative audio and motion before going live. These settings reduce avoidable problems, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted streaming. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a separate local recording if the archive matters.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the bitrate for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate; a higher-resolution upload recommendation is not a substitute for the live-ingest table.

For HDR or other non-SDR workflows, check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the applicable recommendations rather than applying the SDR values above. The live guidance page is the authority for the complete current bitrate table; the examples below are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of delivered picture quality.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Use the row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. These examples are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates:

Do not choose a bitrate just because it is the largest number in the table. The encoder’s sustained upload path must carry the selected stream reliably. Test capacity and content at the quality you intend to use; if the connection cannot sustain that bitrate, select a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that it can. The YouTube live-encoder page includes the full current table, including minimum values.
Practical 1080p choices
- 1080p30: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- 1080p60: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
Those values describe recommended video ingest bitrates, not a promise that a particular recording, encoder, or connection will look or behave a certain way. Avoid ranking codecs solely by the bitrate figures: compatibility with the encoder and playback workflow also matters.
Configure the encoder and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and use the Live Control Room’s stream settings to obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide walks through creating a stream with an encoder. Interface wording can change, so follow the labels shown in your current Live Control Room.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: it tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement, as described in YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Enter the ingest details in the encoder. Select the RTMPS server URL when available, then enter the stream key. Keep resolution and frame rate on automatic detection unless your workflow calls for manual selection with a custom stream key.
- Set the video and audio parameters. Choose a supported codec, a sustainable resolution and frame rate, the matching recommended bitrate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Apply the audio settings for stereo or 5.1 as appropriate to your program.
- Send a test feed and check the preview. Confirm that audio and video appear in Live Control Room and review stream-health messages before scheduling viewers to arrive.
- Start the event deliberately. YouTube’s live tips say to set up an encoder event at least two hours ahead and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. For a public 24/7 channel, keep an operator responsible for checking stream health rather than treating launch as a one-time task.
Test for the content and conditions you will actually stream
YouTube advises testing before a live stream with audio and movement similar to the real program. A static slate is not a meaningful substitute for a documentary segment with narration, music, scene changes, or other motion. Test the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate on the same network and encoder path you will rely on.

- Watch the Live Control Room preview and check the sound as well as the picture.
- Review stream-health notices and resolve warnings before relying on the stream.
- During operation, monitor audio and video quality. Monitoring is an operating practice, not a guarantee against outages.

Plan for encoder failure and failover
A 24/7 feed needs a recovery plan; no bitrate or keyframe setting guarantees that an encoder, network, or YouTube ingest connection will stay up continuously. YouTube recommends matching important settings between primary and backup streams: resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings.
- Configure the backup encoder to match the primary’s important video and audio parameters.
- Test failover before relying on it. YouTube’s tips suggest stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then verifying that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Restore the primary only after confirming the stream has recovered and checking the player and Live Control Room.

Keep the archive separate from the live stream
A continuous broadcast and a reliable recording are separate responsibilities. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Do not assume that a 24-hour stream will produce a complete YouTube archive. If preserving the program matters, record locally or use another recording arrangement and verify that the file is growing during the broadcast.

Keep prerecorded programming within YouTube’s rules
Encoder settings cannot grant rights to the video or audio you broadcast. Before scheduling a loop, confirm you have permission to use the footage, music, narration, and other material in both the live broadcast and any recording. A stream that is technically healthy can still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted over rights issues. For channel monetization, technical compliance is also distinct from YouTube’s content and monetization policies; prerecorded or repetitive material should not be assumed to qualify merely because it is streamed live. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before launch.

YouTube’s encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for YouTube Live, with optional PlayToStream support for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. It also describes recording to SD cards, USB storage, or network locations. Availability and product features should be checked with the maker before purchase; YouTube’s listing does not make the device necessary for a stable stream.
YouTube’s guide also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 YouTube Live streaming of prerecorded video. That identifies a use case, not a neutral comparison of pricing, reliability, or performance. The choice between local and cloud operation depends on who operates the encoder, whether the workflow schedules prerecorded media, supported ingest formats, local archive needs, failover arrangements, and the costs and ongoing responsibilities you can verify for your region.
