A practical starting point is a Linux VPS running a software encoder that loops properly licensed story videos and sends one continuous H.264/AAC feed to YouTube over RTMPS. For static illustrations, begin at 720p, 30 fps, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. The VPS runs the encoder; YouTube hosts the live broadcast and transcodes it for viewers. No official YouTube guidance establishes a minimum VPS size or preferred provider, so choose a host against your actual encoding workload and sustained network needs.
Can you run a 24/7 YouTube livestream from a VPS?
Yes. The VPS can run an encoder continuously and send its audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation explicitly describes a channel broadcasting a 24/7 live feed: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. The server does not host the public watch page; YouTube receives the feed, publishes the broadcast, and handles playback delivery.
This setup is for prerecorded media, not a camera broadcast: store the story video and audio on the server or make them accessible to the encoder, then configure playback to loop. Use stories, illustrations, music, sound effects, and other material only when you have the necessary rights.
What VPS should you choose?
There is no evidence-based universal plan size. YouTube does not specify minimum CPU or RAM for a VPS, and the encoder’s workload depends on whether it is simply forwarding an already encoded file or re-encoding media. Do not treat YouTube’s video bitrate recommendation as a VPS specification.

Compare prospective hosts on the actual service terms and workload:
- Sustained outbound network: confirm the host can maintain your configured stream bitrate, including audio and network overhead.
- Monthly transfer allowance and overages: estimate the total traffic for your planned runtime and compare it with included outbound transfer.
- CPU, RAM, and encoding support: size these for the encoder and any re-encoding you plan to do; validate with a sustained test rather than guessing from a plan label.
- Storage: account for source videos, logs, and any local recordings you intend to retain.
- Route and region: consider sustained connectivity to YouTube’s ingest service, but verify it with a test from the chosen host.
- Recovery and operations: check whether you can run managed background services, restart a failed process, monitor it, and get support.
Provider transfer policies, prices, and uptime terms vary; verify current terms directly with each host. A VPS can run your encoder, but that does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Recommended starting stream settings
For static illustrated stories, a reasonable starting point is 720p at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a 4 Mbps H.264 video bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps. That figure is the encoder’s outgoing video bitrate, not a required VPS plan or a total network allowance. Add the audio bitrate and overhead when estimating network use.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | A secure, ordinary choice for sending the feed to YouTube. |
| Video codec | H.264 | YouTube’s cited 4 Mbps recommendation applies to H.264 at 240p–720p, 30 fps. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p, 30 fps | A practical initial target for mostly static artwork; confirm the source material and encoder can sustain it. |
| Video bitrate | 4 Mbps at 720p30 | YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps; audio and overhead are additional. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the outgoing stream. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo | Include its bitrate when calculating required sustained outbound capacity. |
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to check the applicable bitrate recommendations if you change resolution or frame rate. Do not raise resolution merely because the VPS plan advertises a large CPU count: source quality, encoder load, and reliable network delivery still matter.

How to set up a continuous VPS stream
- Enable live streaming on the channel. Verify the channel and enable live streaming before the planned start. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to access Live Control Room and set up the stream. Select the audience accurately, including whether the content is made for kids. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s ingest settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, source repositories, screenshots, and logs. Restrict access to the encoder configuration; if the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
- Configure the encoder. Point it at YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL and key. Set H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate supported by both the selected output and the VPS’s sustained connection. Configure the story playlist or file playback to loop without gaps if that is the intended viewing experience.
- Run it as a managed service. Configure a background service with restart-on-failure behavior, log rotation, and a health check. Alert when the encoder exits or the stream stops advancing. These are operational safeguards, not guarantees supplied by a VPS provider.
- Test before relying on it. Send representative story video and audio, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then check the public watch page and playback on a phone. Observe CPU and network use during a sustained run. YouTube advises creators to test and monitor their streams.
- Estimate traffic and archive needs. Calculate monthly transfer from the total configured bitrate and runtime, including audio and overhead, then compare it with the host’s outbound transfer allowance and overage terms. Decide separately how to preserve episodes or replays.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on one continuous 24/7 broadcast as a guaranteed replay file. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
If preserving individual stories matters, keep local copies and plan a separate archive workflow. You can also schedule distinct broadcasts shorter than 12 hours, but verify that any segmentation arrangement actually creates separate YouTube broadcasts and preserves the viewing experience you want; do not assume a looping encoder automatically creates separate archives.

Children’s content, chat, ads, and copyright
Set the audience accurately
If the stream is genuinely intended for children, mark it made for kids in YouTube’s audience controls. For made-for-kids live streams, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay, Super Chat, comments on upcoming streams and archives, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. These settings affect interaction and revenue expectations; do not promise chat or personalized advertising. See YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance.
Use media you have rights to stream
Confirm that you have permission for every story, illustration, music track, sound effect, and other element in the feed. Copyright matches or strikes can lead to streaming restrictions. Hosting the encoder on a VPS does not change your obligations, and streaming through another channel does not bypass an active channel restriction.

Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: verify the channel and enable the feature ahead of launch; first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check that there is no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm the RTMPS URL and stream key match the current YouTube broadcast. Check for typos, a reset key, blocked outbound traffic, or a stopped encoder process.
- Stream health is poor or playback buffers: compare the full outgoing bitrate—not just the video bitrate—with the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. Reduce the encoder bitrate or output target if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again.
- The VPS runs out of transfer or incurs overages: recalculate monthly traffic using the complete configured bitrate and runtime, then review the provider’s current transfer allowance and billing terms.
- The stream stops after a process failure: inspect service and encoder logs, enable restart-on-failure, and use an alert that detects process exit or stalled output. A restart mechanism helps recover the encoder process but is not a promise that YouTube or the host will never interrupt service.
- No archive appears: check stream duration. A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so use a separate recording or a verified shorter-broadcast plan if replay matters.
- Chat or personalized ads are missing: if the stream is made for kids, these features are disabled by YouTube’s rules; they are not encoder faults.
- A story or song triggers a copyright issue: review rights for every element and resolve the issue through YouTube’s applicable process. Moving the encoder to a different VPS does not remove a copyright restriction.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not administer a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is the #1 option to try for keeping a YouTube stream running: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply on every plan; only the billing period changes. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
