A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. To prevent it from recurring, first find where the picture disappears: check the camera or video source, the encoder preview, YouTube’s stream health and error timestamps, then the encoder’s processing and outbound connection. Add a UPS only if local power loss is a real risk; no single setting or purchase fixes every cause.
Find where the picture disappears
Do not start by changing bitrate or replacing equipment. Compare the picture at each stage of the path: the camera or media player, the encoder preview, and the stream in YouTube. If you record locally, check that recording too. YouTube recommends inspecting the encoder preview, encoder errors and CPU load, and the local archive when troubleshooting a live stream (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream).
- The source is black: Check that the camera, media player, or other source is producing video and that its connection and input are correct.
- The source looks right but the encoder preview is black: Inspect the selected video source, source routing, and encoder errors. Check CPU load and the local recording if available.
- The encoder preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black or unhealthy: Check YouTube’s health messages and timestamps, then investigate encoding and the outbound connection.
This sequence helps separate a source or local processing fault from a problem delivering the stream. A black screen by itself does not identify which component failed.
Read YouTube’s health messages before changing settings
For a YouTube broadcast, open the Live Control Room or Live Dashboard and check the Health Indicator. YouTube displays errors beside it with timestamps; red errors are critical and yellow errors are moderate. Capture the exact wording and time, then use that message to guide the next check instead of changing several settings at once (YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages).

YouTube’s LiveStream API describes health states including good, ok, bad, and noData. Its configuration issue categories include noVideoStream and videoIngestionStarved (Google for Developers: Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources). These labels help narrow the investigation, but an unhealthy or no-data state does not by itself prove which device or connection is at fault.
Check the video format, bitrate, and source delivery
If YouTube reports an incorrect stream format, follow its current guidance for the error. The cited YouTube Help page identifies H.264 video and AAC audio for that format error and says to use the bitrate shown for the selected resolution. If the available upload bandwidth cannot support the selected setting, YouTube advises lowering the resolution. Do not apply a bitrate number without considering the resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, and current platform guidance.

YouTube’s API treats a missing video stream and video ingestion starvation as distinct issues. Check that the encoder is actually sending video and compare its output settings with the platform’s current requirements before changing unrelated settings.
Requirements are platform-specific. Cloudflare Stream, for example, says that a connected live stream that has not become playable may need AAC audio and a fixed keyframe interval of two to eight seconds for that particular condition (Cloudflare Stream: Troubleshooting a live stream, updated 2026-07-30). That is Cloudflare guidance, not a YouTube requirement; use the receiving platform’s own current instructions.

Check encoder load and the outbound connection
If the encoder preview itself is faulty, inspect source routing, encoder error messages, CPU load, and the local archive. If the preview and local recording look healthy but the delivered stream does not, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube notes: “If your stream looks and sounds healthy, there may be an issue with your outbound Internet connection.” If connection tests show a problem, contact your internet service provider with the test results and the time of the stream fault.
A network upgrade is not the first step without evidence that the connection is the cause. Use the health message, preview, recording, and connection test to identify which part of the path needs attention.

Prepare for interruptions without assuming they are fixed
Configure and verify encoder reconnect
OBS Studio has a configurable automatic reconnect option (OBS Studio Overview Guide). It may help restore output after a connection interruption, but it cannot correct a failed source, unsupported settings, or a problem at the receiving platform. Before relying on it for an unattended broadcast, verify its behavior in a private or otherwise controlled test stream.
Use a UPS only for a known local power risk
A UPS can provide temporary power to connected computers, servers, and telecommunications equipment during an outage (ENERGY STAR: Uninterruptible Power Supplies). Its runtime depends on the connected load; adding equipment reduces the available backup time (APC: UPS Buying Guide). Size it for the encoder and network equipment that need backup and the ride-through or shutdown time required. The cited guidance does not establish that a UPS will power a 24/7 broadcast for any particular duration. It will not fix a black source, encoding fault, weak internet connection, or platform-side issue.

Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded aarti videos, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Cloud playout is for prerecorded material, not a live temple camera, and recovery is not a guarantee of uninterrupted output.
Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
Check rights and platform rules for the material
Technical continuity does not settle whether the stream is permitted. Before looping recordings, confirm that you have the rights needed for the aarti audio and video and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules. Do not assume that devotional subject matter, a recording’s age, or repetition makes copyrighted material safe to broadcast. YouTube’s error and troubleshooting guidance can identify delivery problems, but it does not establish that a particular recording is cleared for use.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Source and encoder preview are black | Confirm the camera or player is producing video and the correct input is selected. | Fix the source or its connection, then confirm the encoder preview returns. |
| Source is visible, encoder preview is black | Inspect source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and local recording. | Correct the local source or processing problem before adjusting YouTube settings. |
| Encoder preview is healthy, YouTube reports no video or unhealthy status | Record the Health Indicator message and timestamp; check the video output and encoder errors. | Match the exact error to YouTube’s current instructions and confirm the encoder is sending video. |
| Picture is healthy in the encoder, but delivery is intermittent or starved | Review YouTube health messages and test outbound connectivity. | If the test identifies a connection problem, contact the ISP; use reconnect only as recovery support. |
| Stream stops when local power fails | Confirm which encoder and network equipment lose power. | Consider a UPS sized to the actual load and required backup time. |
