Yes, technically: you can run encoder software on a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM), give it a prerecorded video and YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, and send the video to YouTube as a live stream. YouTube documents encoder-based streaming and recommends RTMPS. Running that encoder on a VM is an implementation choice—not a turnkey 24/7 relay that Google documents or a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

For India, the exact answer on availability and cost depends on the region, VM configuration, bandwidth and stream design you choose. The available information here does not establish a specific India region or a reliable monthly total, so verify both in Google Cloud’s current region and pricing tools before deploying.

What “Google Cloud streaming to YouTube” means

The most direct route is to use a Compute Engine VM as a host for encoder software. The encoder reads your prerecorded media and sends an outgoing stream to YouTube’s ingest address using the stream key for your broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder-based streaming.

This is a combination of documented components: YouTube accepts encoder feeds, while a VM can host software. It should not be mistaken for a Google Cloud feature that automatically turns a video file into a guaranteed, continuously running YouTube channel. You are responsible for configuring and supervising the encoder, media access, network connection and recovery behavior.

Compute Engine VM versus the Live Stream API

Option What it does Fit for directly sending a stream to YouTube
Compute Engine VM running an encoder Hosts encoder software that reads prerecorded media and sends a feed to YouTube’s ingest address and stream key. The clearest route among these options for an encoder feed. Hosting the encoder on a VM is an implementation inference, not a documented turnkey relay.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Accepts live SRT or RTMP input and produces HLS or DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. The reviewed product overview does not document it as a direct YouTube publishing destination. Do not treat it as a one-click YouTube relay.

The Live Stream API’s pricing model is separate from the cost of running an encoder on a VM: its pricing page describes charges based on active channel time and input/output resolution, with an additional output charge for each distribution stream. Do not apply that API pricing to a Compute Engine encoder.

What to check before starting in India

Channel eligibility

YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and can restrict a channel’s ability to livestream.

Content rights and territory

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for rights on the person providing the live content. They say the provider represents and warrants having “all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world,” including relevant music licensing rights, and requires compliance with applicable laws and territory requirements.

Having a copy of a video file does not by itself establish permission to stream everything in it. Check the rights for music, footage, performances and other material, as well as any territory-specific requirements that apply to your content. If a rights holder has licensed a stream, YouTube may still interrupt it if the channel has not been allowlisted through Content ID.

Monetization is a separate review

A technically available livestream is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification renamed its former “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” and says the policy includes repetitive or mass-produced material. The policy applies to live streams; eligibility depends on the channel and the actual content. Repetition alone does not establish the outcome, but monetized content is expected to be original and authentic and to provide viewer value.

  1. Check the YouTube channel first. Confirm that it is verified and has no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. Review the rights and policy checks above before scheduling continuous playback.
  2. Create and configure a YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, select an encoder-based stream and obtain its ingest address and stream key. Use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended protocol. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to transmit to that stream.
  3. Select a Google Cloud region and VM. Verify that the region and machine configuration you need are currently available. The exact India region and configuration are not established here. Choose a VM that can read the media and run your encoder while sustaining the required outbound stream; do not assume that a particular machine size or network capacity is suitable without checking it.
  4. Make the prerecorded media available to the VM. Store or transfer the video where the encoder can access it, and confirm that the VM can read the files needed for the planned playback. Plan for storage access and for what the encoder should do when it reaches the end of a recording or playlist.
  5. Configure the encoder’s YouTube destination. Enter the YouTube ingest address and stream key in the encoder, and configure it to send the selected media as a live feed. Match the encoder settings to the source video and YouTube’s current requirements. The information available here does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution or keyframe interval; those values should not be guessed or applied identically to every source and configuration.
  6. Start the encoder and verify the live stream. Confirm that the encoder is sending and that YouTube receives the feed before relying on unattended operation. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, logs and shared files.
  7. Design for continuous operation. Decide how the encoder process will be monitored and restarted, how the media source will remain accessible, how you will detect a network or process failure, and what recovery action should follow. These are engineering measures for a long-running setup, not a Google or YouTube uptime guarantee.
  8. Estimate and validate ongoing costs. Include VM compute, storage as applicable, and outbound internet traffic. Estimate transferred data from the chosen bitrate and hours online, then check the VM’s outbound capacity and current egress charges for your configuration. A 24/7 stream runs continuously, so do not base the budget only on the time needed to upload the video.

How to assess the cost and reliability

There is no defensible India-specific monthly total without the region, machine type, encoder workload, bitrate, storage needs, redundancy plan and current egress charges. Google Cloud’s documented VM egress capacity depends on configuration; validate it for the machine you select and calculate traffic at your intended bitrate. A higher-bitrate feed transfers more data over the same number of streaming hours.

For reliability, a single VM and encoder can still be affected by a stopped process, inaccessible media or a network interruption. Process supervision, monitoring, restart logic and a recovery plan can reduce the amount of manual intervention, but the reviewed information does not establish an uptime guarantee or prescribe a specific design. If your channel must remain live, plan and budget for the failure modes that matter to you rather than treating “the VM is running” as proof the YouTube feed is healthy.

Ways to keep a YouTube prerecorded stream running

These choices serve different needs: a managed service reduces the cloud and encoder operations you handle yourself, while a VM gives you more responsibility for the setup and its recovery.

Option What to expect Best fit
StreamNeo Cloud-hosted YouTube playback for uploaded videos or playlists; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Creators who want prerecorded YouTube playback to continue without keeping a home computer online or administering a VM encoder.
Google Cloud Compute Engine VM with an encoder Flexible, do-it-yourself architecture using an encoder and YouTube’s ingest address and key. You handle the VM, media access, costs, monitoring and recovery; exact India availability and total cost need configuration-specific checks. Creators who want to manage their own cloud environment and are prepared to operate and troubleshoot it.
Google Cloud Live Stream API Documented for live SRT/RTMP input and HLS/DASH output saved to Cloud Storage. The reviewed overview does not document direct publishing to YouTube. Workflows needing the documented live-input and HLS/DASH-output path, rather than an assumed direct YouTube relay.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across your active slots, playlists, support, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, with no re-encode and no quality tiers, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot.

The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; UPI and cards are available in India. See StreamNeo for the service details, then start your free day.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check that the encoder uses the correct YouTube ingest address and stream key, and that the VM can send outbound traffic. If you expose or share the key, replace it in the YouTube setup and update the encoder configuration.
  • The stream stops when left unattended: Check whether the encoder process exited, lost access to its media, or encountered a network interruption. Add monitoring and a deliberate restart or recovery procedure; merely running the VM does not ensure the encoder feed is active.
  • The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It can replace the feed with a placeholder and temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream if the matched content remains. Resolve the rights issue; if licensed content is still being interrupted, check whether the rights holder must allowlist the channel through Content ID.
  • A monetized channel is concerned about repeated programming: Streaming the same or similar material continuously does not, by itself, settle monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy against the actual programming, its originality and viewer value.
  • The estimated Google Cloud bill is unclear: Separate Compute Engine costs from Live Stream API pricing, then check the current region and machine price, storage needs and egress for the specific configuration. The Live Stream API’s active-channel pricing is not the price of a VM-hosted encoder.

What the 12-hour archive note does—and does not—mean

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the stream ends. That statement concerns archiving: it is not evidence that a stream longer than 12 hours is forbidden, nor a guarantee that a 24-hour livestream will be archived.
