For it to stay live around the clock, the encoder, computer and internet connection must keep working; a rotating image alone does not make a stream continuous. Before starting, clear the rights to every audio and visual asset, and plan around YouTube’s archive and monetization rules.
What you need for a continuous stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says channels must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- OBS Studio, the media you intend to play, and an always-on computer with a reliable internet connection.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Audio and visual material you own or have permission to use for the live broadcast and any replay.
OBS is the encoder: it sends your composed scene to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. A locally hosted setup depends on the computer, power and network remaining available; YouTube cautions that a connectivity disruption can break a stream (Streaming tips).
Prepare and clear the programming
Choose the audio and visuals
Decide whether the broadcast will use one continuous audiovisual file or a playlist that rotates several files. For a radio-style stream, you might pair music or spoken-word material with a documentary still, waveform, title card or sequence of changing images. Test that the visual changes and audio transitions work together before you go live.
Confirm the rights cover live use
Use work you created, public-domain material whose status you have checked, or material licensed for the exact use you plan—including live streaming, territories and replay. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the image with a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it. A license may not prevent a Content ID interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Read Copyright issues with live streams and YouTube’s Terms of Service, which place responsibility for necessary rights, including music rights, on the provider.

Build the looping scene in OBS
Loop one media file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Name it, then select the local media file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Check the preview for both picture and sound, and confirm the file restarts as expected when it ends.
OBS documents Media Source and other source options in its Sources Guide. The precise property labels can vary by OBS version.
Rotate a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already available on the computer; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene and create or select a playlist of the media files you want to rotate.
- Enable Loop Playlist and inspect the preview. Confirm the desired order, aspect ratio, audio levels and transitions between items.
OBS’s Sources Guide covers VLC Video, supported media formats and the VLC installation requirement. A playlist can rotate more material than a single-file loop, but neither arrangement proves rights clearance or makes the programming eligible for monetization.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, regenerate it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS.
- Start streaming in OBS, then wait for the incoming feed and preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture and audio there before selecting the YouTube control to start the public live broadcast.
- Keep Live Control Room and the public watch page available for checks. Verify that the audio remains audible, the visuals rotate, and the stream is still receiving data.
YouTube’s encoder guide explains how to create a stream and use the stream URL and key: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Do not share the stream key: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
Keep it running and plan for interruptions
With OBS running locally, the computer must stay powered on, OBS must remain open and connected, and the network must sustain the upload. YouTube recommends a reliable connection, bandwidth headroom and ongoing stream-quality monitoring (Streaming tips). For an overnight or multi-day broadcast, arrange someone to check the stream and know how to restart OBS or reconnect it if the encoder or connection fails.

There is no guarantee that an internet outage, power loss, computer update, OBS crash or YouTube-side interruption will recover without attention. Test the setup before relying on it, and decide who will respond to a failure. A service hosted in the cloud can remove the home computer from the always-on chain, but check that its playlist controls, outage recovery, key handling and operating cost suit your needs.
Account for archives and monetization
Do not assume an indefinite stream becomes one complete replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder instructions (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). For a continuous broadcast, do not assume a single archive will capture the full duration. If replay access matters, split the programming into planned sessions and check the current archive behavior in YouTube Studio.

A rotating visual does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and identify repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content.” Monetized work must provide materially varied substance and creative, educational or other value; changing the image while repeating the same audio is not, by itself, evidence of that. Review YouTube channel monetization policies, including the policy update dated July 15, 2025. Eligibility for ads, memberships, Super Chat or Super Stickers depends on channel and feature requirements, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve (Monetize your live stream).

Troubleshooting common problems
