CPU limits

How to Limit CPU Usage on a VPS Running a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a hard CPU quota on the systemd service or Docker container that runs FFmpeg or OBS, then verify that encoding and YouTube stream health stay on track. A quota creates a ceiling; CPU priority settings such as CPUWeight= and --cpu-shares do not. There is no universally safe quota: the right value depends on the VPS and the stream workload.

Choose the control that matches your goal

First identify where the encoder actually runs. Apply the limit to the service or container that owns the FFmpeg or OBS process and its child processes—not merely to a shell that starts it.

Control What it changes Hard ceiling? Best fit
systemd CPUQuota= Maximum CPU time for a service cgroup Yes FFmpeg or OBS launched as a systemd service
Docker --cpus or Compose cpus Maximum CPU capacity available to a container Yes Encoder runs in Docker
systemd CPUWeight= or Docker --cpu-shares Relative scheduling access when workloads compete No Favor other workloads under contention without setting a fixed ceiling
systemd AllowedCPUs= or Docker --cpuset-cpus Which CPUs the process or container may run on No; restricts placement, not CPU time CPU pinning or isolation for a specific reason

Docker says that, by default, a container has no resource constraints and can use as much of a resource as the host kernel scheduler allows. A quota can free CPU for other services, but it can also throttle the encoder. If your goal is only to adjust relative priority, a weight may be appropriate; it will not stop a workload from using otherwise available CPU.

Limit a systemd service with CPUQuota

Use this method when the stream runs as a systemd service. systemd defines CPUQuota= as a percentage of one CPU: 20% means at most one-fifth of one CPU, while values above 100% allow multiple CPU-equivalents. The example below is illustrative, not a recommended setting for every VPS.

  1. Find the service name. Use the unit that directly manages the encoder and its process tree. For example, if the unit is youtube-stream.service, edit that unit rather than applying a limit to a temporary launcher shell.
  2. Edit the unit. Run sudo systemctl edit --full youtube-stream.service and add the quota under its [Service] section:
    [Service]
    CPUQuota=150%

If the unit already has a [Service] section, add the setting there rather than creating a duplicate section.

  3. Reload systemd and restart the service. Run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then sudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service.
  4. Check the result while the stream is running. Inspect service status and resource use with tools available on your distribution, then compare encoder progress and YouTube stream health with the baseline. If encoding falls behind, raise or remove the quota, or reduce the workload.

The quota applies to the service’s cgroup, so the stream process should be managed by that unit. The appropriate percentage depends on the CPU, codec, output settings, filters, concurrent work, and whether the encoder can keep pace.

Limit a Docker container

For Docker, --cpus sets a hard CPU ceiling. Docker’s documented example --cpus=".5" limits a container to at most half of one CPU. If you use Compose, its cpus setting expresses the number of CPUs available to the service.

  1. Set the limit where the container is created. For an existing deployment, update its run command or Compose configuration, then recreate the container. For example: docker run --cpus="1.5" …. Replace the ellipsis with your existing image and required arguments; this is a syntax illustration, not a universal quota recommendation.
  2. With Compose, set the service limit. Add cpus: 1.5 to the relevant service configuration, then apply the updated configuration using your normal Compose deployment workflow.
  3. Verify the running container. Run docker stats to inspect live CPU, memory, and network I/O metrics. Also check encoder progress and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

Docker’s rootless resource controls have requirements: the host must use cgroup v2 with systemd, and the cgroup controllers must be delegated appropriately. If a limit appears not to take effect, check the Docker mode and host cgroup configuration rather than assuming the flag provides a working ceiling in every setup.

Do not substitute --cpu-shares for --cpus. Shares affect relative access when containers compete for CPU; they do not cap a container when CPU is otherwise available.

Use weights or CPU affinity only for the right reason

systemd CPUWeight= and Docker --cpu-shares influence how competing workloads share CPU. They are not ceilings. systemd AllowedCPUs= and Docker --cpuset-cpus restrict where a workload can run, not how much CPU time it can consume. On a unified cgroup hierarchy, systemd’s effective allowed CPU set may also be narrowed by parent cgroups. Choose a quota when you need a maximum; choose a weight or CPU set only when relative scheduling or placement is the actual goal.

Tune the quota without losing real-time encoding

  1. Record a baseline. Note CPU use and whether the encoder completes frames in step with the intended output before changing the limit. Keep an eye on network use too; CPU and outbound bandwidth are separate constraints.
  2. Apply a cautious cap. Start with a value informed by the observed workload and the capacity you need to leave for other services. Do not assume a low setting will preserve real-time output.
  3. Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Use the actual audio, motion, encoding configuration, and duration expected in the stream.
  4. Adjust based on evidence. If encoding falls behind or YouTube reports stream problems, increase the quota or change the workload. If it remains healthy, observe it under the conditions that matter before treating the limit as suitable.

FFmpeg’s -stats_enc_pre and -stats_enc_post options can write per-frame information before encoding and as encoded packets are received. Use available FFmpeg progress or statistics alongside CPU metrics; a CPU graph alone cannot show whether the encoder is keeping pace.

If the encoder cannot keep up within the available CPU budget, reducing resolution or frame rate may reduce the workload, but it changes the delivered stream. YouTube’s settings guidance lists different targets by codec and resolution; check the applicable settings and test the result rather than assuming one output is best for every channel. A larger CPU allocation can help only when CPU capacity is the bottleneck.

Do not confuse bitrate with CPU usage. Bitrate and output choices affect network requirements, while CPU workload depends on the encoder and its settings. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing upload speed and keeping 20% upload headroom. If outbound bandwidth is insufficient, a lower CPU quota will not fix it. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

SpaceNode’s 2026 provider guide offers indicative estimates, not independent benchmarks or universal VPS sizing rules: for FFmpeg loops it suggests 1 core, 1 GB RAM, and 2 Mbps upload at 480p; 2 cores, 2 GB RAM, and 5 Mbps at 720p; and 2 cores, 4 GB RAM, and 8 Mbps at 1080p. For 1080p OBS software encoding it suggests 4 cores, 4 GB RAM, and 10 Mbps; for 1080p OBS GPU encoding, 2 cores plus a GPU, 4 GB RAM, and 10 Mbps. Treat these as that provider’s estimates, not a guarantee for your workload. GPU availability and FFmpeg support vary by host, and hardware acceleration can involve data-copy overhead.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The stream falls behind after setting a quota: The encoder may be throttled below the capacity needed for the selected output. Raise or remove the cap, check frame progress, or reduce resolution or frame rate and test the changed output.
  • CPU usage is still high despite changing a weight: A weight controls relative access during contention, not a maximum. Set a quota on the correct service or container if a ceiling is required.
  • The limit does not seem to affect the encoder: Confirm the encoder belongs to the systemd unit or container you limited. With rootless Docker, verify cgroup v2, systemd, and controller delegation requirements.
  • YouTube reports unstable ingest while CPU looks acceptable: Check outbound bandwidth, bitrate, and upload headroom separately from CPU. Confirm the current YouTube settings for the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
  • Changing CPU affinity did not reduce usage: Restricting the CPUs on which a process may run does not impose a CPU-time ceiling. Use a quota if you need a hard maximum.

Or let it run in the cloud

If managing a VPS quota is not the goal, StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
