Run your encoder inside a tmux session on the VPS, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder can keep running after your SSH connection ends. This protects against a disconnected terminal—not an encoder crash, a VPS reboot, or a YouTube ingest failure.
Keep the encoder running when SSH disconnects
- Connect to the VPS over SSH. Install
tmuxif it is not already available, using the package method supported by your VPS’s Linux distribution. - Start a named session on the VPS:
tmux new -s youtube. The session must run remotely, after you have connected to the VPS. A tmux session on your own computer will not preserve a process running on the server. - Start your encoder inside that session. Configure it with the YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a password: it is the credential that lets the encoder send a feed to YouTube.
- Detach without stopping the encoder. Press
Ctrl+B, release the keys, then pressD. You can now close SSH. - Reconnect and inspect the session: SSH into the same VPS, then run
tmux attach -t youtube. Replaceyoutubeif you chose a different session name.
The tmux manual describes sessions as surviving accidental disconnection, such as an SSH timeout, and intentional detachment. That persistence is what makes tmux useful here; it does not supervise or restart the encoder.
Set up and check the YouTube feed
In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream in Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube explains that the key is the credential used to identify where the encoder should send its feed. A custom stream key can be reused. Before relying on the VPS for a documentary premiere or scheduled broadcast, preview the feed and check YouTube’s stream health. Use an upload connection with headroom: YouTube recommends 20% more bandwidth than the total streaming bitrate. It also recommends testing backup-encoder failover. Its guidance covers RTMPS, codecs, keyframes, and bitrate; select settings appropriate to your encoder and actual VPS upload capacity rather than assuming one configuration fits every stream. What tmux does—and does not—protect against

Troubleshooting
- The stream stops when you close SSH: The encoder may have been started outside tmux, or tmux may have been running on your local computer rather than the VPS. Start a session on the VPS and launch the encoder inside it.
tmux attach -t youtubecannot find the session: Check that you connected to the same VPS and used the session name you originally created. If the session ended, tmux cannot restore the process; check whether the encoder exited and start it again as needed.- The tmux session exists, but the stream is offline: A surviving terminal is not proof that the encoder is healthy. Reattach and inspect its output, then verify the encoder is still sending to the correct YouTube server URL with the correct stream key.
- The feed is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the VPS’s available upload bandwidth against the encoder’s total bitrate, leaving the headroom YouTube recommends. Preview the feed and test failover before an important broadcast.
