Use two recovery layers: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover an RTMP output after a temporary network failure while FFmpeg is still running; a process supervisor must relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits. Neither guarantees a seamless viewer experience or that YouTube keeps the same event state. After recovery, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
What kind of failure are you recovering from?

These are separate failure modes. FIFO recovery cannot relaunch a process that no longer exists. A relaunch can also create an interruption; a successful restart does not prove that viewers saw an uninterrupted stream or that YouTube preserved the same live-event state.
Prepare YouTube and protect the stream key

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and current stream key into your FFmpeg output configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that the URL and key connect the encoder to YouTube and allow YouTube to accept the feed: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, article, screenshot, or log. If you suspect it has been exposed or the encoder reports a key error, copy a current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder; restarting with an invalid or revoked key will not repair the credential. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends this encrypted extension to RTMP, and its recommended codec, keyframe, bitrate, and resolution settings can change; consult the current encoder settings and quality recommendations rather than relying on a stale preset.
Recover a network interruption while FFmpeg is still running
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP example using a FIFO output, FLV as the FIFO format, and recovery attempts after network failure. The key options are -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1. Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation for the complete command context and option behavior.
Use the documented example as a starting point for your RTMP output, not as a guarantee that every outage will recover. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the options, then test with your actual input and YouTube destination. The recovery wait option is part of the example; tune and validate behavior against the network conditions you expect.
Do not mistake HTTP input reconnection options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_at_eof, or -reconnect_streamed for general RTMP-output recovery controls. Those options belong to FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol handling: FFmpeg HTTP protocol options.
Restart FFmpeg after the process exits
FIFO recovery operates inside FFmpeg. If FFmpeg terminates, use a process supervisor configured to restart it after failure, or a loop that waits before relaunching the command. Set a delay and retry policy deliberately: an immediate, unlimited retry can create a restart storm without fixing a broken input, invalid key, or unavailable network. The right configuration depends on the host and how you run FFmpeg; no single supervisor configuration fits every system.

Make restarts observable. Keep logs that show process exits and relaunches, and arrange alerting if the stream matters operationally. On a retry, verify that FFmpeg actually started with the intended command and key, then check the YouTube preview and stream health. Do not assume that a restarted encoder automatically restores the scheduled event or makes the viewer-facing stream continuous.
Set YouTube start and stop behavior carefully
In Live Control Room, review the auto-start and auto-stop settings for the stream. They may let the encoder control when a stream starts and stops, but scheduled streams can require you to wait for the preview and click Go live. Follow the flow YouTube presents for your event; encoder auto-start does not necessarily bypass a scheduled event’s explicit step. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and live stream settings.
YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That describes ending a feed; it is not a promise that a later FFmpeg relaunch will seamlessly continue the same event.

Test both failures before relying on recovery

Start a test stream and confirm that the expected source, audio, and video appear in the Live Control Room preview.

Interrupt network output while leaving FFmpeg running. Check its logs and whether FIFO recovery restores output and the preview.

Separately terminate FFmpeg. Confirm the supervisor or loop relaunches it after the configured delay, and inspect the new process logs.

For both tests, check stream health, picture and audio quality, the public watch page, and the resulting archive. A process running again is not sufficient proof that the broadcast is healthy or that viewers could watch throughout.

Keep enough upload capacity for the stream
YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Network disruptions can break a stream, so measure the available upload capacity under realistic conditions and leave that margin; do not treat a nominal connection speed as guaranteed capacity. The recommendation appears in YouTube’s streaming tips.
Common recovery problems

FFmpeg is gone, but no restart occurs: FIFO cannot help after process exit. Check that the supervisor watches the correct process and command, that its restart policy covers the exit, and that its logs show a launch attempt.

FFmpeg restarted but YouTube has no incoming preview: Check the current stream URL and key, the destination protocol, and FFmpeg’s output logs. A stale or invalid key will not become valid through retries; replace it with the current key from Live Control Room.

The preview returns, but the event is not live: Check the event’s Live Control Room flow. A scheduled stream may need preview followed by an explicit Go live action.

Network recovery repeats or fails: Confirm the FIFO options are supported by your FFmpeg build, check the actual input and destination, and test the available upload capacity. HTTP reconnect flags do not solve RTMP-output failure.

The broadcast degrades under load: Compare combined stream bitrate with measured upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. Recheck current encoder settings rather than applying a setting copied from an older guide.
