How to Stream a Music Playlist 24/7 on YouTube Using OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a local music playlist in OBS, install VLC media player, add a VLC Video source to an OBS scene, load your files, and enable Loop Playlist. Then connect OBS to YouTube using the encoder setup in YouTube Studio. This can play continuously while your computer, power, network, files, and stream remain available; OBS and YouTube do not guarantee a 24/7 broadcast.

Before you go live, confirm you have permission to broadcast every track on YouTube—and to keep an archive if you plan to save one. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream.

What you need before setting up the playlist

  • OBS Studio and VLC media player installed on the computer that will run the broadcast. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. The source is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Media Sources
  • Local audio files you have the right to broadcast. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; check the current requirements and setup in YouTube’s live-streaming guide.

Confirm music rights before broadcasting

Music being available online, purchased, or playable in a personal account does not by itself grant permission to retransmit it publicly. Check that your rights cover YouTube live streaming in the territories where you will broadcast, and cover the stream archive too if you intend to leave one available. For copyright-protected music, YouTube for Artists advises coordinating with the label or distributor. YouTube for Artists: Going live for music channels

YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even if you hold a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream not to be interrupted. Confirm this with the rights owner before going live. Set up a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS and VLC. Install VLC before opening the playlist source in OBS. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install the 64-bit version of VLC.
  2. Open the scene you want to broadcast. In the OBS Sources dock, select the + button and add VLC Video. If VLC is installed but the source does not appear, check that the VLC and OBS installations have matching architectures, then restart OBS. OBS documents adding and layering sources in its Sources Guide.
  3. Load your files. In the VLC Video source properties, add the local music files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. This restarts playback after the final playlist item. Shuffle Playlist is optional: leave it off to preserve your order, or enable it for randomized playback.
  5. Set Visibility Behaviour. Choose whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. If the music should continue while another scene is active, choose the continue behavior.
  6. Add a visual layer. Add an appropriate static image or visualizer to the scene. Check the scene preview and audio meter. Sources are layered, so a visual placed above another source may obscure it; adjust their order in the Sources dock as needed.
  7. Test playback. Play through the playlist in OBS and verify that audio is present and that the last item returns to the beginning. Make a short private or otherwise planned test before promoting an all-day broadcast.

OBS’s Media Source is another option for a single file: its Loop control repeats that file. For a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video and Loop Playlist. OBS Media Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live-streaming setup. Choose the encoder workflow and follow the current on-screen instructions to create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key. YouTube’s workflow and eligibility rules can change, so use its current live-streaming guide alongside YouTube Studio.
  2. Enter the stream details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: anyone who gets it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  3. Start and verify the broadcast. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Check OBS’s stream status and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving the broadcast and that the expected image and audio are present before sharing the link.
  4. Monitor the setup. For a long run, check that the playlist is still playing, the computer and network are available, and YouTube has not flagged or interrupted the stream. Plan for recovery if the computer restarts, power or internet fails, a media file becomes unavailable, or the stream disconnects.

YouTube’s HLS documentation describes how media segments are ordered and assembled for ingestion; its HLS “Media Playlist” is a protocol term, not the local VLC playlist you configure in OBS. Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS

Troubleshooting common problems

  • VLC Video is missing from the source list: install VLC, confirm its architecture matches OBS (OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), and restart OBS.
  • The playlist stops after the last track: open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. The single-file Media Source’s Loop option is not the playlist control.
  • Music pauses when you switch scenes: change the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour to continue playback while hidden.
  • The scene has no visible image: inspect the Sources dock ordering. A source above another can cover it; move the image or visualizer to the intended layer and check the preview.
  • YouTube does not accept the broadcast: check channel verification and live-stream restrictions, then review the current YouTube Studio instructions and account eligibility page.
  • The stream is interrupted after it starts: check YouTube Studio for a copyright notice or other stream status. A rights match may interrupt the broadcast; contact the rights owner about the license and Content ID allowlisting rather than repeatedly restarting an unapproved stream.
  • The stream goes offline unexpectedly: check OBS stream status, computer power, internet connectivity, and whether the local files remain accessible. A local OBS setup depends on all of these; test the playlist and stream again before announcing a return.
