To run a prerecorded video on YouTube around the clock without leaving your computer on, make the broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect its server URL and stream key to a cloud streaming service, then start the service and check YouTube’s incoming preview. The cloud service supplies the ongoing video feed; YouTube still controls the live event, viewer access, archive, and DVR behavior.
Before you start: check that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Rules can change, so confirm the current requirements in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming before scheduling a broadcast.
How to set up a 24/7 YouTube live stream
1. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a stream server URL and a stream key.
- Copy both values for use in the cloud service. The key is a secret: treat it like a password, do not share it or show it in screenshots, and enter it only in the provider’s authorized YouTube connection or encoder settings. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
2. Add the YouTube destination to the cloud service
In the service, select its YouTube destination or encoder output. If it asks for a server URL and stream key, paste each into the matching field. If it offers an authorized YouTube connection instead, follow its documented sign-in flow and confirm the selected channel. Select the uploaded video or playlist you intend to broadcast, and check that the service is configured to loop it if that is the intended format.
Cloud services differ in their accepted sources, formats, looping controls, continuity features, recording options, and visibility into stream health. 3. Test the stream and verify YouTube’s preview
- For the first run, use a private or unlisted broadcast if that suits your test.
- Start the cloud output and wait for the incoming preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Check that the intended video and audio are present, the correct stream is selected, and the watch page opens on another device.
- If reliability matters, test the backup or failover path. A second ingest address is not proof that failover is configured or working automatically.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing failover, verifying the live page, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its live streaming tips also recommend checking that a local archive is growing when you are recording locally.
4. Decide how failures and recordings will be handled
Before leaving a stream unattended, know how you will detect a frozen picture, missing audio, a failed source file, a lost connection, or a provider restart—and what action restores the feed. A cloud service removes the need to keep your own computer running as the encoder; it does not establish that a broadcast will never be interrupted. Continuity, notifications, maintenance behavior, and recovery steps are provider-specific. For example, Restream warns that its server may undergo maintenance and restart during continuous sessions over 24 hours; that warning applies to its service and should not be generalized to others. Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a durable replay, make or arrange a separate recording and confirm how it is stored and retained. YouTube’s guidance is at Archive live streams.
Can viewers rewind a 24/7 YouTube stream?
Not reliably for an unlimited period. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. This is an archive and rewind limitation; it is not a statement that YouTube automatically ends every broadcast at the 12-hour mark. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

If viewers need a complete replay or dependable rewind, plan for separate recordings or distinct shorter broadcasts, and verify that the cloud provider’s workflow supports the restart or scheduling pattern you intend to use.

Compare the service’s documented terms and capabilities against the actual broadcast you need. Check the following before committing:

- Source and looping: Can it use uploaded files, cloud storage, a playlist, or the specific input you need? Does it loop continuously?
- YouTube connection: Does it use channel authorization or require the server URL and stream key? Can you verify which channel receives the output?
- Continuity: What happens after a failed source, connection loss, service restart, or scheduled maintenance? Are there alerts, automatic restart, or a documented recovery procedure?
- Recording and retention: Does it make an independent recording? How can you export it, and how long is it retained? A provider recording is separate from YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior.
- Operational visibility: Can you see stream health, logs, preview, or notifications, and how can you reach support?
- Limits and terms: Verify current storage, supported formats, resolution, number of simultaneous outputs, plan eligibility, and price on the provider’s own pages.

When custom streaming protocols matter
Most people using a hosted service do not need to configure DASH manifests or HLS playlists. Those details matter when building an encoder, selecting a protocol exposed by a cloud provider, or debugging a custom ingestion pipeline. Google’s implementation guides cover DASH and HLS.

For API-based automation, YouTube distinguishes stream resources—which define how content is sent—from broadcast resources, which represent the event. Its API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses and recurring-event behavior; in the documented recurring-event pattern, one event can be live at a time.
