First find where the picture disappears: check your encoder’s live output, YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health messages, then the public player on a second device or browser. If the encoder is already black, inspect its scene and visual source. If the encoder looks right but YouTube reports missing video or an ingest error, check the signal and encoder settings. If both previews work but one viewer sees black, investigate that playback device or browser.
Find where the black screen starts
Compare the same stream at three points in its path. This is a practical diagnostic sequence, not a guarantee that any one display identifies the cause.
- Encoder output: Look at the encoder’s live or program view. If that is black, start with the scene, source, or media being sent.
- YouTube preview and health: Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Its Health Indicator reports issues with the stream YouTube receives, with timestamped messages; red indicates a critical error and yellow a moderate one. An unresolved error can reappear. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
- Public playback: Open the public stream on a second device or browser. If the encoder and YouTube preview look normal but one client is black, treat it as a playback-side symptom and investigate that client before changing the encoder.
Also note whether OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections. Those point toward the connection to the remote service, not necessarily a black visual source.
If the encoder output is black
Check the picture at its origin before changing bitrate or other YouTube ingest settings.

- Confirm the intended scene is active and that the visual source is enabled, visible, and not hidden behind another source.
- Check that the source still resolves and produces frames. Depending on your setup, this may be a looped media file, browser source, remote visual feed, or another source.
- Confirm the media or loop has not stopped, ended, or lost access to a file or feed it depends on. Reload or reopen a source only after checking what it relies on.
There is no single repair that applies to every 24/7 music-stream setup: the cause depends on the source and encoder configuration. YouTube’s health messages can identify missing video at ingest, but a black encoder preview calls for checking the scene and source first.
If YouTube reports missing video or an ingest problem
Read the exact Live Control Room message and its timestamp, then make one targeted change at a time. YouTube documents errors for no incoming video and video ingestion starvation; starvation means it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, which can cause viewers to buffer. Check that the encoder is actually sending video, then compare its format and settings with the selected stream configuration. Check format and encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select bitrate according to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending, using the relevant row in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
For example, YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations—not universal targets and not a promise that raising bitrate will fix a black source.

Fix the reported issue, not every setting at once
YouTube’s documented ingest errors also include unsupported formats, missing or multiple video streams, interlaced input, and incorrect frame rate, keyframe interval, or resolution. It can report inconsistent primary and backup stream settings as well. Match the encoder output to the selected stream configuration and correct the specific item named in the message. Changing several settings together makes it harder to tell which change helped.
If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote service is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. That points to network capacity or stability; it does not by itself show that the video source is black. - Use a wired connection if Wi-Fi instability may be involved. Ethernet can help with a network problem, but it will not fix a missing visual source or the wrong scene.
- Check that the available upload speed is stable. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate; this is not a guarantee of adequate capacity, and the selected bitrate must still fit YouTube’s limits and your actual sustained connection.
- Try another ingest server, lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, and check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software is interfering.
- Update network drivers if appropriate, and consider whether other devices or applications are using upload capacity.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may reduce dropped frames, but it does not resolve the underlying connection problem, and lower bitrate means lower quality.

- Confirm the encoder output shows the intended visual and continues producing frames.
- Check that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview recovers and review the Health Indicator for new or recurring messages.
- Open the public player on another device or browser to confirm playback beyond the control-room preview.
- For a long-running stream, make periodic checks of both encoder output and YouTube health part of normal operations. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during an event; no particular setting guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use audio and movement similar to what the actual stream will send when testing.
