How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube Live from a Computer

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast from a computer, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with the stream URL and key, load the video in that encoder, then check the preview and click Go live. You need a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; YouTube says initial live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so set it up well before the event.

Before you start

  • Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance also states a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Allow time for activation. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave activation until the day of your broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  • Choose an encoder. YouTube supports software encoders that run on your computer as well as standalone hardware encoders. Software is a valid starting point; hardware can suit more involved productions, but is not a requirement just to play a prepared video. YouTube live streaming tips for computers and YouTube streaming tips.
  • Confirm rights. Use video and audio you have the right to broadcast and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube specifically warns that a scheduled stream’s trailer must not infringe another party’s content; that trailer warning is not a complete statement of all copyright rules. Manage live stream settings.

Schedule a stream or go live immediately

Schedule a planned broadcast

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Manage tab and schedule the stream. A scheduled event can have a shareable watch-page URL, and viewers can opt in to reminders. Scheduling is useful for a documentary premiere or other timed viewing because you can promote the watch page in advance. Manage live stream settings

Start an immediate broadcast

For an unplanned stream, open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go live to set up an immediate stream. The remaining encoder and preview steps are the same; you do not need to create an upcoming event first. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Connect the computer encoder

  1. Open the stream’s encoder settings in YouTube Studio. Find the stream URL (or server URL) and stream key for the broadcast.
  2. Enter the connection details in your encoder. If it offers YouTube as a service, select it and provide the requested stream key. Otherwise, paste YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the key into its stream-key field. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let the encoder send the feed. Treat it as a credential; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. Encoder setup instructions and stream settings.
  3. Load the video as the encoder’s source. Use the current instructions for your chosen encoder to add or select a local media file and configure playback. YouTube’s setup pages explain how to connect an encoder, but do not specify current file-source steps for a particular desktop application, so do not assume an identical menu path across programs or versions.
  4. Check the encoder’s audio and video feed. Confirm the correct video is selected, playback begins as expected, and audio is present before sending the stream to YouTube.

Check upload bandwidth and the YouTube preview

YouTube advises that your total stream bitrate stay below the upload bandwidth available to the computer and recommends about 20% headroom. For example, if an encoder sends a total bitrate of 10 Mbps, aim for at least 12.5 Mbps of available upload capacity under the test conditions. This is a practical illustration of the 20% spare-capacity recommendation, not a guarantee: other devices and shared networks can reduce the bandwidth your stream actually gets. Check upload speed on the network you will use and test ahead of time. YouTube streaming tips

For an encoder event, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Start sending the feed early enough for the Live Control Room preview to appear, then check that the picture and sound are correct and monitor stream health before the event begins. YouTube streaming tips

Start and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder so it sends the prerecorded video feed to YouTube.
  2. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Verify the right video is playing and that viewers will hear its audio.
  3. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in YouTube Studio when you are ready to begin the public broadcast. For an immediate stream, follow the on-screen launch controls for that stream.
  4. When the broadcast is finished, use YouTube’s end-stream control, then stop the encoder from sending. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Troubleshoot common problems

  • No preview appears: Check that the encoder is connected to the correct YouTube stream URL and that the stream key matches this broadcast. Confirm the encoder is actually sending, and allow time for the preview to load.
  • YouTube rejects the stream key or the wrong event receives the feed: Recheck that you copied the URL and key from the intended stream in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it may have been shared or exposed.
  • The feed stalls or quality drops: Compare total encoder bitrate with current upload capacity, leaving the recommended 20% headroom. Pause other heavy network use if possible and retest on the network that will carry the event.
  • The picture is present but there is no sound: Check audio playback and the encoder’s selected audio source before going live; verify the audio in the preview rather than relying only on the local file playing on the computer.
  • Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, any live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time activation has completed. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The event starts late despite a scheduled watch page: Scheduling creates the event page, but the encoder still needs to connect and the stream must be launched. Start the encoder early and check the preview before the scheduled time.
