You can keep a YouTube live stream running from a Linux VPS by using an encoder such as FFmpeg to send video and audio to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The VPS can operate without a desktop session, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming: you still need a stable outbound connection, a correctly configured encoder, and monitoring. This guide covers the setup, decisions that affect reliability, and what to check when a stream fails.
Before you start
- A Linux VPS with enough capacity and sustained outbound data allowance for your specific workflow. There is no universal CPU, memory, storage, or bandwidth minimum established for every stream.
- Video and audio you have the right to stream, plus an encoder workflow that can loop a file or playlist, or otherwise produce continuous output.
- A YouTube channel where live streaming is enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder for the current Studio flow. Interface labels can change.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. Complete YouTube’s live-streaming activation for the channel and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use. YouTube provides the ingest server URL and stream key in the stream’s settings.
- Choose the stream’s scheduling and audience settings. Set the title, description, visibility, audience designation, and any other applicable details in Studio. Make sure they accurately describe the material and comply with YouTube’s policies.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it in a protected configuration or secret store on the VPS rather than publishing it in scripts, logs, public repositories, or support requests. If it is exposed, change or regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Prepare the VPS and media
Pick the workload before picking a server
The VPS will run the encoder and continuously upload its output. Requirements depend on whether you transcode video or send it through unchanged, the resolution and frame rate, the number of simultaneous outputs, where media is stored, and the provider’s sustained network-transfer rules. Transcoding typically requires more CPU or hardware-encoding capacity than stream-copying. A source file that already matches the required format may be stream-copied, but only if the encoder can produce a compatible continuous feed.
No particular VPS size is a guaranteed minimum for all of these cases. Check the provider’s current transfer allowance, acceptable-use rules, regional availability, and support terms. Test the actual workload and observe CPU, memory, storage, and network use before relying on it.

Make the programming genuinely continuous
Decide whether the stream will loop one file, play a playlist, or combine sources. Check that files have compatible audio and video streams and that transitions do not leave gaps or terminate the encoder. A single-file loop and a playlist are different encoder workflows; there is no one universal FFmpeg command that safely covers every media format, playlist, and transcoding choice.
FFmpeg’s official documentation is at ffmpeg.org/documentation.html. Confirm the options against your installed FFmpeg version and media before starting a long-running stream; do not treat an untested command copied from another setup as a reliability guarantee.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use YouTube’s supported encoder settings as a baseline, then confirm compatibility in your encoder and test the result. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Bitrate must be sustainable on the VPS’s actual outbound connection.
| Setting | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to the ingest protocol and encoder support. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. |
| Frame rate | YouTube lists support up to 60 fps. Use a rate appropriate for the source and available upload capacity. |
| Rate control | Use CBR, as YouTube recommends. |
| Keyframes | Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Bitrate | Choose a rate the VPS can sustain reliably. The right value depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection; do not assume the provider’s advertised peak speed is sustained upload capacity. |
| Ingest protocol | Prefer RTMPS when available. Consider HLS only where its supported use cases, such as HDR or a codec not supported by RTMP, fit your workflow. |
YouTube recommends encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as a starting point. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not fix an unstable or invalid encoder feed.

RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS sends RTMP through an SSL connection, and YouTube recommends it for secure ingest. Confirm the exact server name, port, and SSL configuration supplied for the stream; incorrect ingest details or SSL setup can prevent a connection. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation describes connection requirements.
HLS is an alternative for supported situations, including some HDR or codec needs that RTMP does not support. It sends video in segments, so YouTube describes it as higher latency than continuous RTMP delivery. Check protocol support in your encoder and whether the stream’s codec and HDR requirements call for HLS before choosing it. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

Connect, test, and start the stream
- Configure the encoder output. Enter the YouTube ingest server URL and the stream key from Live Control Room. Select RTMPS if your encoder supports it and YouTube’s settings provide it for your stream.
- Start with a representative test. Use the actual media, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol you plan to run. A brief test with different settings may not reveal the problem that occurs during the real stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Verify that YouTube receives the feed and inspect stream health before making it public or depending on it. Confirm both video and audio are present and that the picture and sound are acceptable.
- Start the intended broadcast. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts for the stream’s visibility and broadcast status. Do not assume that a working encoder process alone means viewers can see the intended live event.
YouTube’s live-stream status documentation describes health information used to identify and diagnose stream problems. Keep Live Control Room available during the test and establish how you will notice a dropped feed.

A process running in a shell is not a complete operating plan. Run the encoder under a service manager or another supervised process, retain logs, configure an appropriate restart policy, and arrange alerts if the process exits or YouTube reports a problem. These are implementation choices, not a guarantee that the stream will never stop. After a restart, verify that the encoder reconnects correctly and that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Monitor the VPS as well as YouTube: sustained network transfer, CPU and memory pressure, disk space, and provider limits can all affect a long-running job. If your programming uses local files, check that the paths remain available after restarts and that the storage will not fill with logs or temporary files.
Copyright, policies, and archive limits
Only stream material you are authorized to use, including music, footage, and any included performance or recording rights. A looped or prerecorded program is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and platform rules. Do not assume that permission to upload a file automatically covers continuous public streaming, or that changing, looping, or combining material removes rights obligations. Review YouTube’s policies and any applicable rights before going live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on one continuous stream longer than 12 hours being archived. If preserving a complete replay matters, plan a broadcast schedule and separate recording or archive workflow that does not depend on automatic archiving beyond that stated threshold. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Recheck the server URL, port, stream key, protocol selection, and SSL configuration. Confirm live streaming is enabled and the key belongs to the intended stream. If the key was exposed, replace it and update the VPS configuration. |
| Feed connects, then drops or becomes unstable | Check YouTube stream health and VPS network behavior. Reduce bitrate or output demands to a level the connection can sustain, and inspect provider transfer or network limits. Do not infer stable upload capacity from a short speed test alone. |
| Video looks poor or YouTube reports encoder issues | Check the codec and protocol combination, CBR setting, keyframe interval, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance. Test the actual media and settings rather than changing several variables at once. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Confirm an audio stream exists in the source, the selected codec is supported, and the encoder maps audio correctly. Retest with the same media and watch both audio and video in Live Control Room. |
| Stream stops after a media item ends | Check the loop or playlist logic and whether a file boundary causes the encoder to exit. Run the service under supervision and review logs to distinguish an expected end-of-file from a crash. |
| Stream restarts but does not recover on YouTube | Inspect service logs, key and ingest configuration, then check Live Control Room for the current health state. Test the restart path intentionally before relying on it in production. |
| Stream runs but archive is missing or incomplete | Check the broadcast duration and YouTube’s archive behavior. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; plan separately for longer programming. |
