Yes. A Raspberry Pi can be configured to encode and send a live stream to YouTube, but that does not mean every Pi, video source, or Indian internet connection can run unattended 24/7. Check YouTube channel eligibility, use the correct power supply for your Pi, and test your complete setup under sustained load before relying on it.
What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—guarantee
A Raspberry Pi can serve as a YouTube encoder. A community Raspberry Pi 4 project describes sending a stream with hardware encoding, illustrating that a Pi-based setup is technically possible. It is not an official recommendation or a controlled endurance test, and it does not establish that a different board, video source, resolution, or connection will be stable around the clock. The community project should be treated as an example, not a reliability certification.
For a documentary channel, the right configuration depends on the Pi generation, source and capture method, target resolution and frame rate, software, cooling, power, and the upload connection. You also need a plan to detect and recover from a process, network, or power failure. Run your actual build for an extended test before leaving it unattended.
Check YouTube eligibility and stream limits
YouTube’s current live-streaming help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions during the past 90 days. The stated minimum age for live streaming is 16, and encoder streaming is a supported method. See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio and use the encoder settings and stream key provided there.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in public scripts, screenshots, or repositories.
- YouTube lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Policy or copyright restrictions can disable or interrupt live streaming. Check the current YouTube live-streaming restrictions before configuring multiple broadcasts.
Plan the Pi hardware for continuous operation
Choose a model-appropriate power supply
Raspberry Pi documentation specifies 5.1V supplies, with current needs varying by board and connected peripherals. It recommends a 3A USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 400, and a 27W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5. Confirm the recommendation for your exact model and setup in the Raspberry Pi computer hardware documentation.
An inadequate supply, cable, or high-draw USB accessory can cause voltage drops. Raspberry Pi warns that poor-quality power can lead to unpredictable behavior and storage corruption. If a peripheral draws more than the board can supply, the documentation recommends an externally powered USB hub. Do not assume the power adapter that came with another device is suitable.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Monitor temperature and throttling
The Pi’s built-in throttling helps prevent overheating damage. A heatsink or small fan can reduce thermal throttling and improve performance; Raspberry Pi recommends active cooling for best performance, but an added fan is not automatically required for every streaming setup. Check the board’s temperature and throttling during the actual sustained workload, in its intended enclosure and location.
Set the stream quality to fit the real upload connection
A continuous broadcast needs upload capacity that can sustain the encoder’s output, with headroom for variation. There is no universal minimum upload-speed figure established for this Pi-to-YouTube scenario in the reviewed official YouTube material. Check your ISP plan’s sustained upload performance, data or fair-use limits, and outage behavior at the location where the Pi will run. Then monitor stream health in YouTube Studio.

For an India-specific point of comparison, the National Informatics Centre’s webcast service page specifies outbound access to RTMP port 1935 and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its own webcast setup. That is NIC service guidance—not a YouTube-wide minimum and not a guarantee that a consumer broadband connection will work reliably. See NIC Webcast Services.
Configure and validate the DIY broadcast
- Confirm eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days.
- Prepare the Pi. Select a model and power supply suited to the encoder workload and peripherals. Arrange cooling appropriate to the observed temperature in the intended operating conditions.
- Prepare the video source and encoder. Choose the source, resolution, and frame rate your complete system can sustain. Set the encoder to send to YouTube using the settings provided in YouTube Studio. The available evidence does not establish one set of bitrate or resolution settings that is right for every Pi, source, and uplink.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the key in your encoder configuration without exposing it in public files, screenshots, or repositories.
- Run an extended test. Observe YouTube Studio’s stream health, Pi temperature and throttling, power stability, and the connection under sustained use. Test what happens when the encoder process or network connection drops, and establish how you will notice and recover from a failure.
- Reassess before leaving it unattended. Do not treat a successful short test as proof of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Validate the exact workload and recovery behavior you intend to use.
A community Pi 4 project reports using rpicam-vid hardware encoding and reducing its stream to 854×480 at 30 fps to stabilize ingest on a jittery uplink. Those settings describe that project’s circumstances; they are not a general recommendation or a benchmark for other builds. See the community implementation.

Protect documentary content from live copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
- Use material you created or have clear rights to stream live.
- Confirm whether the rights holder requires Content ID allowlisting before starting a long broadcast.
- Do not assume that a video’s availability on YouTube or possession of a licence alone prevents an automated live-match interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
