You can stream a playlist continuously to YouTube by listing compatible video files in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer file, looping that input, and sending it to a YouTube Live ingest URL with a private stream key. The setup is dependable only if the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases match—or you normalize them first—and if you monitor the host and upload connection.
What you need before you start
- A computer or server that can run FFmpeg for as long as you want the broadcast to remain live, plus a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity.
- Video files you are authorized to stream. Check that the files are compatible with one another before using the concat demuxer.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and a stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Enough local storage if you plan to record a backup of the outgoing broadcast.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases across its input files. If a playlist mixes dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, codecs, or stream counts, normalize the files to a common profile before concatenating them. The right profile depends on your source files and intended output.
A 24/7 schedule is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: host restarts, upload failures, invalid timestamps, and incompatible transitions can interrupt a broadcast. No single computer specification or universal process-supervisor setup fits every workload; test the actual files and machine you intend to use.
Prepare a compatible playlist
1. Inspect and normalize your media
Check the video and audio streams in every file. For a concat-demuxer playlist, make sure each file has the same stream layout, codecs, and time bases. If they differ, transcode the files separately to a consistent format before building the playlist. Re-encoding uses CPU or hardware-encoder capacity, so assess performance with your actual media rather than assuming a particular machine will handle it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file named playlist.txt containing one file entry per video, in playback order. For example:
file '/path/to/video-01.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-02.mp4'
file '/path/to/video-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. If a source’s stored or computed duration is wrong, the concat demuxer can produce gaps or artifacts; its playlist format supports a duration directive to override duration metadata when needed. Check transitions rather than assuming that a list which parses will play cleanly.

Configure YouTube Live ingest
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Use the actual values supplied for your broadcast; do not publish, screenshot, or share the key, which functions like a password.
- Use RTMPS when it is available for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS, and RTMPS encrypts transmission to Google’s servers.
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, recommends H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include:
| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are platform recommendations, not measured performance guarantees. Choose settings for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure the upload connection can sustain the total bitrate with spare capacity. Verify YouTube’s current recommendations before publishing because ingest guidance can change.

Build and run the FFmpeg command
The command below shows the loop-and-publish pattern for a compatible playlist. Replace the example RTMPS address and key with the values from Live Control Room. This example re-encodes video and audio to a consistent H.264/AAC output; its chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are examples, not universal settings. Adjust them to the source media, intended output, and YouTube’s current recommendations.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-re reads file media at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. -f concat -i playlist.txt selects the concat demuxer and reads the playlist. The two -map options select the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. Confirm that this mapping matches your files; it is not appropriate for every stream layout.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The encoding options in the example set H.264 video at 30 fps with a two-second GOP and a nominal 5 Mbps rate, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. The bitrate matches YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 only if the output is in fact configured to that resolution; the command as written does not set output dimensions. If you need a particular resolution, set it deliberately after checking the source aspect ratio and avoiding unwanted stretching. For other frame rates or resolutions, choose matching encoder settings and bitrate rather than copying these values blindly.
Stream copying can avoid re-encoding, but use it only when the media’s codecs, timestamps, and output container and ingest requirements are compatible. When they are not, encode to a consistent profile. FFmpeg option behavior can vary with build and input; test the command with your installed version and complete playlist before relying on it unattended.

Test the broadcast before leaving it running
- Start FFmpeg and check that it connects and continues sending data to YouTube.
- Open the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video and audio are present and that stream health does not show a problem.
- Watch transitions between playlist items, especially the first loop back to the beginning. Look for gaps, freezes, black frames, missing audio, or timestamp errors.
- Check that the upload connection has headroom and remains stable under the actual streaming load.
- If recording locally, confirm that the recording is being created and that the destination has adequate free space.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event. A test is especially important before leaving a 24/7 broadcast unattended.
Plan for outages and archive limits
Expect to monitor the host and connection
FFmpeg looping handles repeated file playback; it does not remove the need to handle a stopped process, host restart, or failed internet connection. Decide how you will monitor the broadcast and recover it, and test that recovery plan. A particular daemon or restart procedure depends on the operating system and environment, so no one configuration is universal.
Keep a separate recording if the broadcast matters
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not depend on YouTube’s archive as its only copy. If preserving the output matters, record locally and verify the recording. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive backup.
Check the rights and channel implications
Only stream material you have the rights to use. A playlist of owned, licensed, or otherwise authorized videos can still trigger copyright claims if its music or other elements are not cleared for the intended use. Repeated or reused material may also affect how a channel is assessed for monetization; a continuous stream is not a substitute for following YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies. Review the rules that apply to your channel and content before going live.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Concat errors or broken transitions | Files have different streams, codecs, time bases, or inconsistent duration metadata. | Inspect the inputs, normalize them to compatible properties, and check playlist durations where metadata is inaccurate. |
| Video or audio is missing | The selected stream mapping does not match the files, or a playlist item lacks the expected stream. | Inspect each item’s streams and revise the -map options for the actual layout. |
| YouTube does not accept the stream | The ingest URL or key is incorrect, the key is not the one selected for the broadcast, or the output does not meet ingest requirements. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and check the selected codecs, container, and encoder settings. |
| Stream health reports connection problems | The upload connection cannot sustain the bitrate, or the connection is unstable. | Reduce output bitrate or resolution as appropriate and retest on a reliable connection with spare capacity. |
| Video stutters or FFmpeg cannot keep up | The host may not have enough capacity for the chosen re-encoding workload. | Measure the actual workload, use compatible stream copying if safe, or choose an encoding profile the host can sustain. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | A 24/7 stream exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. | Keep and verify a local recording rather than relying on a YouTube VOD archive as the sole copy. |
