Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical 24/7 YouTube stream, start with OBS at 1920×1080, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and AAC stereo audio. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, but that is a platform target—not proof your connection can sustain it. Measure upload speed where the stream will run and leave 20% headroom; if the connection or encoder cannot handle the target reliably, use 720p30 instead.
A stable OBS starting profile
Use this as a baseline for ordinary SDR video, then test it on the actual computer and connection intended for the broadcast. OBS menus vary by version and encoder, so match the target properties rather than relying on identical menu names.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920×1080 | Full HD; reduce to 1280×720 if the connection or encoder cannot sustain the chosen profile. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | A practical baseline for many documentary, ambient and pre-recorded-video streams. |
| Video encoder | H.264 | Use the H.264 bitrate figures below only when streaming with H.264. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 | YouTube lists 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum for this mode. Choose a lower mode rather than forcing an unstable rate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s listed stereo AAC guidance. |
| Color | SDR, Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use this for standard dynamic range material. |
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec and output mode; do not carry an H.264 value over to an AV1 or HEVC encoder.
Choose resolution and bitrate together
The following figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not guarantees about what an individual Indian broadband or mobile connection can deliver. Minimum values are not a sensible target if they leave no margin for network variation.

| Output mode | Recommended H.264 bitrate | Minimum H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p30 stream at YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation needs at least 17.5 Mbps of sustained upstream capacity to retain 20% headroom (14 Mbps is 80% of 17.5 Mbps). This arithmetic applies to the stream bitrate alone; other traffic on a shared connection can reduce what is available to OBS. See YouTube’s encoder settings for codec-specific recommendations.
Measure the connection at the streaming location
YouTube recommends that the total outgoing stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. Its streaming tips advise using a speed test that measures upload and warn that shared networks can constrain an individual stream. Advertised plan speed and download speed do not establish sustained upload capacity.

- Run an upload speed test on the computer and network that will broadcast, at the time of day you expect to stream.
- Check whether other household or workplace devices will upload files, back up data or make video calls during the broadcast.
- If the upload varies or available capacity is tight, lower the output to 720p30 and use the corresponding H.264 recommendation rather than trying to hold 1080p30 at an unstable rate.
- Use wired Ethernet where practical. It can avoid some wireless variability, but it cannot prevent ISP, power, computer or platform failures.
The cited YouTube guidance gives no India-specific OBS bitrate, regional upload benchmark or India-only ingest preset. Apply the same platform settings, but measure the upstream connection at the actual location; conditions can differ by ISP, plan, time and local network use.
Configure OBS and connect YouTube Studio
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Select the stream’s settings there and keep the stream key private. YouTube describes the key as password-like because it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. The exact interface labels may change.
- Enter the ingest details in OBS. Open OBS settings for the stream, choose the YouTube service or a custom RTMP/RTMPS destination as appropriate, and enter the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit.
- Set output and video properties. In OBS, choose H.264, CBR, the bitrate appropriate to your selected resolution and frame rate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set 1920×1080 at 30 fps for the starting profile, or select a lower mode if needed. Set the SDR color properties to Rec. 709 and 8-bit if the available controls expose them.
- Set audio. Use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where those settings are available. Play the planned content and check that audio is present, intelligible and not clipping.
- Start a private or scheduled test. Send the feed to YouTube and inspect the Live Control Room preview, stream health and any warnings before relying on the broadcast. Check the public or scheduled watch page from a separate device or browser.
YouTube recommends default stream resolution detection in its encoder settings guidance. Use a manual resolution only when you have a reason to set it explicitly and the chosen stream settings support it. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

Latency choice for unattended or ambient video
For a stream with little audience interaction, normal latency is a reasonable starting point. YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering; low and ultra-low latency are intended for more interactive broadcasts, and neither supports 4K. This is a practical interpretation of YouTube’s latency guidance, not a separate rule for 24/7 streams.
Test continuity before leaving a stream unattended
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than OBS settings. Test the complete setup with movement and sound similar to the planned content, and watch it long enough to catch intermittent problems.

- Confirm that the Live Control Room preview and watch page show both picture and audio.
- Watch stream health and messages while the test is running; correct warnings before beginning a long session.
- Check upload capacity under expected shared-network use, not just when other devices are idle.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup, as described in YouTube’s encoder tips.
- Remember that a second encoder, cable or power backup can reduce some risks but cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation across failures of the ISP, electricity, computer, network or YouTube.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and its DVR documentation says rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams beyond 12 hours. A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast therefore should not be treated as a reliable complete on-demand recording. If you need an archive, record a local copy and verify it, or divide the broadcast into shorter sessions and check that each archive was created.
For more detail, see YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Common OBS and YouTube problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports unstable or the preview buffers | The outgoing bitrate is too high for sustained upload, or shared network activity is using capacity. | Measure upload at the location, leave 20% headroom, reduce the bitrate or output mode, and retest. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder feed | The stream URL or key may be wrong, stale or entered in the wrong field. | Compare OBS with the current values in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update OBS. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or poor | Audio may not be routed to the streaming mix, or encoder audio settings may not match the intended output. | Check OBS audio meters and output routing during a test; confirm AAC stereo, 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz where available. |
| Preview fails after selecting a manual resolution | The manual output may not match the stream settings or encoder capability. | Return to YouTube’s recommended default resolution detection, or verify that the explicit mode is supported by both OBS and the stream setup. |
| One long stream has no complete replay | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. | Keep and verify a local recording, or use shorter sessions and verify each YouTube archive. |
