Calculate bandwidth before selecting a VM
For a continuous stream, approximate outgoing payload as bitrate × seconds ÷ 8. A 30-day month contains 2,592,000 seconds. These calculations are decimal and exclude protocol overhead; actual traffic can be higher.

These are planning calculations, not provider bill quotes. Confirm how a provider defines TB, check current billing terms, include all inbound and outbound traffic, and leave headroom. AWS says inbound and outbound data both count toward Lightsail transfer allowances. YouTube recommends upload capacity of primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% when planning for a stream; monitor actual usage rather than treating the arithmetic as a bill estimate.
What Mumbai Lightsail costs—and what the allowance means
AWS’s current Lightsail pricing page lists the following Linux server bundles in its general table. AWS says Mumbai bundles include half the transfer allowances in that table, so the Mumbai figures below reflect that regional reduction. Pricing and terms can change; confirm the current amount before deployment.

The prices are AWS’s published general Linux bundle prices, while the Mumbai transfer allowances are half the general-table figures. The calculations above show why a seemingly inexpensive VM may not suit a higher-bitrate continuous stream. They do not establish the full invoice for an Indian account: confirm applicable taxes, current terms and any overage charges directly with the provider.
Check alternatives without assuming a winner
Google Cloud lists Mumbai and Delhi Compute Engine regions, with VM prices that vary by region; internet egress is priced separately. Oracle’s India cloud price list includes compute and outbound data-transfer entries. These sources establish alternatives to price-check, but not a complete like-for-like monthly total for a continuously running encoder. Available evidence does not establish a universally cheapest provider.

Compare region and latency to your location and YouTube ingest, compute cost for the CPU and memory you actually need, included regional transfer and egress charges, measured encoder performance, and the operational effort required for monitoring and recovery.
Pick a YouTube encoder profile your VM can sustain
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps at 480p30, 8 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. Select output based on source quality, viewer needs, VM performance and the transfer budget—not just the highest available resolution. Lowering bitrate or resolution directly reduces continuous outgoing data.

- Video: H.264 at a resolution and bitrate the VM can encode or relay reliably.
- Rate control: YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder baseline uses constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS for an encrypted contribution feed.
- Capacity: Leave upload headroom and test the stream. YouTube’s planning recommendation is primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%.
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular small VM can encode a particular source in real time. CPU and codec performance depend on the workload and must be checked on the instance you select.
Set up and operate a DIY Linux VM
- Choose a region and bundle. Start by checking current Mumbai pricing and the region-specific transfer allowance. Size the instance against the intended codec and resolution, then budget for transfer using the continuous bitrate calculation. A published VM specification alone does not show how well it will encode your video.
- Create or schedule a YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository or share it with people who should not control the stream. YouTube’s current interface and eligibility requirements can vary by account.
- Configure the encoder. Use the intended resolution and a bitrate consistent with YouTube’s H.264 guidance and your transfer budget. Prefer RTMPS, H.264, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval unless your supported workflow requires another profile.
- Run a long test on the actual VM. Check CPU and memory use, network transfer, encoder health and YouTube’s stream health. Test the actual source and planned settings for an extended period; do not infer stability from a brief successful start.
- Test recovery deliberately. Configure process supervision and alerting as safeguards. Stop the encoder or interrupt its process and verify that it restarts and reconnects as intended. Do not assume a cloud VM automatically provides failover or reliable recovery.
- Plan for archives separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be saved as a single complete video. Check how the current channel workflow handles long-stream segments and archives.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
