How to Loop Rain Videos With FFmpeg for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a rain video indefinitely with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the video’s -i input option. Add -re before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at its native rate for live output, then encode to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The loop flag repeats the file; it does not guarantee a seamless loop, working audio, an uninterrupted connection, or a continuously healthy broadcast.

How do I loop a video with FFmpeg?

Use -stream_loop -1 before the -i for the file you want to repeat. The value -1 means repeat indefinitely. For a file used as a real-time live source, place -re before that input as well; it tells FFmpeg to read at the input’s native frame rate rather than process the file as quickly as possible. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option details; FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly, so check the documentation for your installed version if syntax or encoder support differs.

Starting command for a rain video

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i rain.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

This is an illustrative command skeleton, not a tested recipe. Replace the placeholder address with the RTMPS ingest URL and private stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Never publish or expose the key in screenshots, public scripts, or logs. The example assumes the input file contains audio and uses H.264. Its 4.5 Mbps video bitrate is only an example, not a suitable setting for every profile; use YouTube’s guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Why option order matters

-stream_loop is an input option. It must appear before the corresponding -i; placing it after the input does not apply it to that input. If you add a separate audio file, video looping alone does not ensure the audio repeats as intended. Give the audio its own looping or source logic and explicit stream mapping, then verify the resulting output.

How do I stream a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live?

FFmpeg reads and encodes the file, while YouTube receives the resulting live feed through an ingest protocol. For a basic rain-video stream, RTMPS is the recommended, simpler default. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and recommends it for live streaming. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guidance for supported codecs and profiles.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live broadcast and locate its ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  2. Choose output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to fit the source and the stable upload capacity of the computer running FFmpeg.
  3. Insert the ingest URL and key into the command’s RTMPS destination, then start FFmpeg. Check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages before and during the broadcast.
  4. Run a pre-stream test with representative motion and audio. Confirm the picture and sound arrive as expected before relying on the stream.

RTMPS or HLS?

RTMPS sends a continuous stream and is the straightforward choice for a standard looping rain video. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for cases such as HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. HLS uses segments and has higher latency; its setup has additional constraints, including 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements if you have a specific HLS need.

Which YouTube encoder settings should I use?

Match the output to the source where practical and choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain steadily. YouTube’s current guidance lists CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and specifies no more than four seconds. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s published recommendations in its current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026—not independent performance measurements.

Output profile YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate Example GOP value at that frame rate for a two-second interval
720p30 8 Mbps 60 frames
720p60 8 Mbps 120 frames
1080p30 14 Mbps 60 frames
1080p60 17 Mbps 120 frames

The GOP examples convert the two-second interval into frames: multiply the frame rate by two. Thus, the sample command’s -g 60 corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps; at 60 fps, use a GOP of 120 for that interval. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec and profile, so consult YouTube’s current table rather than applying these H.264 figures to another codec.

In the sample, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate caps it, and -bufsize configures the rate-control buffer. The shown numbers are not a recommendation for 1080p30: YouTube currently lists 14 Mbps for H.264 at that profile. Use a suitable CBR configuration and verify both the encoder’s behavior and YouTube’s stream health. A speed test and a pre-stream test with similar movement and audio can help identify an upload connection that cannot sustain the chosen profile.

How do I make a rain video play continuously?

Repeating a file is not the same as making its end join smoothly to its beginning. The flag can repeat the input indefinitely, but any hard visual cut, black frame, audio click, or silence at the boundary remains part of the repeated output. Inspect the file’s end-to-start transition before going live. If it is distracting, prepare a source whose final frames and audio transition work with its first frames and audio.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Audio must also be deliberate. If rain.mp4 has no audio stream, -c:a aac will not create rain sound. Add a suitable audio source and map it explicitly, or handle silence intentionally and validate that YouTube accepts the output. If separate audio is part of the design, verify that its loop point stays synchronized with the picture.

Preflight checks before going live

  • Confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before the video input’s -i, and -re is in place for file-based real-time output.
  • Check the source’s actual resolution, frame rate, video and audio streams, and repeat boundary; do not assume the file matches the command example.
  • Select a supported codec, CBR configuration, profile-appropriate bitrate, and keyframe interval in line with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  • Use a stable upload connection with capacity for the selected stream, then test with similar motion and audio.
  • Keep the stream key private and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and notices.
  • Confirm you have the rights to use the rain footage and audio, and follow YouTube’s current live-stream and channel policies. A technical loop does not establish content rights, channel eligibility, or policy compliance.

Troubleshooting a looping rain stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The file plays once and stops The loop option is missing, misspelled, or after the input it should affect. Put -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i.
The video races through or does not behave like a live source The file is being read faster than real time. For file-based live output, place -re before the input and confirm the command’s input-option order.
YouTube does not receive the stream The ingest URL or key may be wrong, or the connection or output configuration may be failing. Use the current URL and private key from Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and verify the selected ingest protocol and encoder settings.
No audio is heard The file may have no audio stream, or separate audio may not be mapped or looped. Inspect the input streams. Add and map an audio source or intentionally configure silence, then test the output.
Picture or sound breaks up The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. Run a speed test, select a profile and bitrate your connection can sustain, and test under representative conditions.
YouTube flags stream configuration or health problems The codec, bitrate mode, keyframe cadence, or another setting may not match YouTube’s guidance. Check the current encoder settings for the selected codec and profile; use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS and a two-second recommended keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
A cut, click, or gap repeats at the same point The source has an audible or visible discontinuity at its loop boundary. Inspect the end and beginning together and prepare a smoother transition in the source before streaming.

Even a correctly looped file can stop appearing live if FFmpeg exits, the computer sleeps or restarts, the network fails, or YouTube’s ingest or channel policies interrupt the broadcast. The loop option controls file repetition, not end-to-end uptime.
