For an unattended prerecorded YouTube stream, you also need continuous video playout and an encoder connection. Set up and test those separately from your scene transitions.
What OBS transitions do—and what they do not do
A scene transition determines how OBS changes the live program from one scene to another. Fade and Cut are available when OBS Studio is first launched; the OBS guide also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color and Luma Wipe as transitions you can add. You can select the active transition and adjust its duration. OBS Studio’s quick-start guide covers the controls.
A transition is not a playlist, file scheduler or unattended playout system. It will not automatically move through a folder of documentaries or keep a video playing all day. Those jobs require a video source or other playout workflow that keeps feeding an encoder; the encoder then sends the stream to YouTube.
Set up a scene transition in OBS
- Build the scenes. Add the sources each scene needs, such as video, graphics or audio. Check that the sources are arranged and visible as intended.
- Choose a transition. In OBS, use the Scene Transitions controls to select a transition such as Fade or Cut. Add another transition if you want a different visual change.
- Set the duration. Adjust the transition duration for the active transition. A cut changes scenes immediately; a fade blends between them over its set duration. Preview the result before using it on the live output.
- Use Studio Mode for a controlled change. Turn on Studio Mode to separate the live program from the editable preview. Select and prepare the next scene in Preview, then use Transition to send it to Program. This lets you inspect a scene before viewers see it.
OBS also provides Quick Transitions, which can have their own durations and hotkeys. For the exact controls available in your version, consult the OBS Studio guide.

Keep prerecorded video playing continuously
Plan continuous playback as a separate part of the setup. Your chosen video source or playout workflow must keep producing a feed, and OBS or another encoder must stay connected to YouTube. Do not assume that adding multiple OBS scenes will sequence prerecorded files automatically; configure and verify file playback or looping in the source or playout tool you choose.
- Enable live streaming and prepare the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream. YouTube notes that enabling live streaming for the first time may take time.
- Connect the encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to enter the stream URL and stream key in OBS or your other encoder. Treat the key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Start the playout and encoder. Confirm that the intended video is playing and that the encoder is sending a continuous feed. For a local OBS setup, the computer running the playout and encoder must remain available and online while it is responsible for the stream.
- Test and monitor. Before relying on the setup, test with audio and motion representative of the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm that the video and sound reach the live output as expected.
YouTube lists OBS as an encoder and Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video in its encoder setup guidance. A cloud workflow can handle playout remotely; a local OBS workflow depends on the local machine and connection. The choice of workflow does not change what an OBS scene transition does.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend RTMPS. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the relevant row in YouTube’s bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.
- Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate that your connection can sustain.
- Use the keyframe interval and encoding options recommended for your chosen protocol and codec.
- Test representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators before leaving the stream unattended.
Optional: control OBS with a Stream Deck
If a person will operate the broadcast manually, Elgato’s OBS integration documents actions for scene selection, Studio Mode, preview-to-program and transition effect or duration control. A Stream Deck is optional: it provides dedicated physical controls, but it does not replace the video playout workflow or keep an unattended stream running by itself. Check compatibility for the specific device and software before buying.

Rights and YouTube rules for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Only stream documentaries, footage, music and other material you have the right to broadcast. The fact that a video can be played in OBS does not establish that you have permission to stream it, and prerecorded or repeated content is not automatically cleared by its format. Review applicable rights and YouTube rules for your specific content.

Troubleshooting
- The picture changes abruptly or too slowly: Check the selected transition and its duration in OBS. A Cut is immediate; a Fade takes the configured duration.
- A preview change appears on the live output too soon: Use Studio Mode to prepare the next scene in Preview, then explicitly transition it to Program.
- The stream does not start: Check that live streaming is enabled, the stream is created or scheduled in Live Control Room, and OBS has the correct stream URL and private key. First-time live activation may take time.
- The stream stops when you leave: In a local setup, verify the computer, OBS, video source and internet connection remain active. A scene transition does not keep those running. If you need remote playout, consider a cloud encoder workflow.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the connection and encoder settings against YouTube’s recommendations for your codec, resolution and frame rate. Run a representative test and monitor stream health.
- Video plays but there is no sound, or motion differs from the test: Recheck the selected sources and audio routing, then test again with representative content before relying on the stream.
