To keep a YouTube stream running around the clock from a VPS, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the server, send its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS, and supervise the encoder so it can restart after a process failure. The VPS must stay powered on and maintain enough outbound bandwidth for the entire stream. This guide uses a prerecorded video as its example; a camera or other live input changes the source, not the need for a persistent encoder and connection.
How the VPS setup works
The chain is: video or live input → FFmpeg running on the VPS → YouTube’s ingest server. The VPS is infrastructure, not a streaming service: you are responsible for installing and configuring the encoder, protecting the stream key, monitoring the process, and paying for server capacity and network transfer under your provider’s terms.
A VPS can keep the encoder running without your home computer, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. VPS outages, network problems, YouTube ingest interruptions, and failures in the input can all stop or disrupt the stream.
Check YouTube access and create an encoder stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room status before building the server workflow.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream configured for encoder software. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as equivalent to a stream’s password and address. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or command you may expose in shell history. If it is compromised, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
Prefer the RTMPS ingest address supplied by YouTube. RTMPS encrypts the transport, and YouTube recommends it. Use the actual server URL and key from your Live Control Room rather than assuming one universal ingest address.

Choose the VPS capacity and stream settings
Budget for sustained outbound bandwidth
The relevant connection rate is upload from the VPS to YouTube, not its download speed. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; for the 1080p30 example, that means planning for at least 6 Mbps of sustained outbound capacity for the stream alone, before other traffic or a backup encoder. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS provider or network route will deliver steady throughput.
Check your VPS plan’s outbound transfer limits and sustained network capacity, as well as CPU or GPU capability if you will transcode. A stream that runs continuously can consume substantial monthly transfer; estimate it from your chosen bitrate and run duration, and compare the estimate with the provider’s allowance and overage terms. No current official US retail listing was published for any named VPS provider.

Match encoder output to the channel and source
- Codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options. H.264 is a straightforward compatibility choice for the example below.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the output.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate and bitrate: Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the source and intended stream. For H.264, use YouTube’s resolution-specific bitrate recommendations; 1080p30 and 1080p60 are listed above.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio options. Confirm the input actually contains the track you expect to send.
FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling and may differ from the build installed by your operating system. Check local help for the options used in your command and verify the output in Live Control Room before relying on it continuously.
Install FFmpeg and inspect the media
- Install FFmpeg using your VPS operating system’s supported package manager or a trusted FFmpeg project build. The exact installation command depends on the OS and its version.
- Inspect the input with
ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4. Confirm the container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether audio is present. Fix a missing or incompatible track before starting a 24/7 session. - Decide whether to copy or transcode. Stream-copy avoids re-encoding and uses less server compute when the source codecs and settings already suit the YouTube stream. Transcoding provides control over codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes, but requires enough CPU or GPU capacity. Do not assume that every file can be copied directly into a compatible continuous stream.
Send a prerecorded video to YouTube with FFmpeg
For a file that should repeat, a basic H.264/AAC transcode pattern is below. Replace every placeholder, including the RTMPS endpoint and secret key, with values from your own YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish a real key in documentation or leave it in a shared script. Check the installed FFmpeg build’s option support before use.

This example targets 1080p30 H.264 at YouTube’s 5 Mbps video recommendation, with a two-second GOP at 30 fps. It is not a universal copy-and-paste command: the file’s dimensions, frame rate, audio, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream configuration must be checked. If you need another resolution or frame rate, select the corresponding YouTube guidance and adjust the encoder accordingly. The -re option reads the file at its native rate, while -stream_loop -1 repeats it. A live camera or other live source needs a different FFmpeg input configuration.
Keep the command and key in a file readable only by the account running FFmpeg, or use an appropriate secret mechanism. Avoid exposing the key through process listings, logs, shell history, or a public repository.

Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Use a supervisor, not an open terminal
Run the encoder as a managed service or under a process supervisor configured to restart it after an unexpected exit. Configure logs so you can distinguish an FFmpeg crash from an input, network, or YouTube ingest error. FFmpeg documents reconnect controls and a FIFO muxer approach for attempting recovery after temporary RTMP output failures; support and option names can vary by installed version, so check the local documentation. Reconnection attempts and automatic process restarts improve recovery, but cannot eliminate upstream outages.
Monitor the whole path
- Check whether FFmpeg is running and whether its logs show repeated output errors or restarts.
- Watch CPU and memory use; transcoding can exceed the VPS capacity even when the network is adequate.
- Monitor outbound network loss and sustained throughput, not just a one-time speed test.
- If recording a local copy, monitor disk space and ensure rotation or retention is deliberate.
- Check Live Control Room stream health and preview, then verify playback on the public or unlisted watch page.
Test a restart and a temporary network interruption before depending on the stream. A supervisor can restart a failed process, but it does not automatically solve a broken input file, an invalid key, exhausted disk, or a VPS-level outage.

Test before making the stream public
- Start with an unlisted or test broadcast and confirm YouTube receives the stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health; verify that both picture and sound are present and stable.
- Open the watch page and confirm playback from a separate device or connection.
- Check that the intended visibility or schedule is set before sharing the stream with viewers.
- Review the encoder and supervisor logs after a deliberate restart test so you know how to diagnose a real interruption.
Plan for copyright, reused content, and archives
Only stream media you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. YouTube’s copyright enforcement can affect a live stream, and permission to use a recording does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. Reused-content decisions are separate from the technical ability to stream: a channel should not assume that looping existing material qualifies for monetization simply because it is live. Review YouTube’s current policies for the specific content and channel before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive. Check current Studio handling for longer sessions and, if a complete record matters, plan separate recordings and storage rather than relying on a single archive.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder signal | Wrong ingest URL or key, a key reset, or an output connection error | Re-copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, update the protected configuration, and inspect FFmpeg logs for connection errors. |
| Stream health is poor or the video buffers | Insufficient or unstable outbound bandwidth, or competing traffic | Compare sustained VPS outbound capacity with the selected bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended headroom. Reduce the target settings if the route cannot sustain them. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Process failure, resource exhaustion, input error, or network failure | Inspect logs and CPU/memory use; configure the supervisor to restart the process and address the underlying error rather than relying on restarts alone. |
| Video works but audio is absent or unsuitable | The source has no expected audio track or the output configuration does not match it | Use ffprobe to inspect the input, then adjust the audio mapping and codec to a supported option. |
| The stream looks different from the intended resolution or frame rate | Source properties, encoder settings, or the Studio stream configuration do not match | Inspect the source and encoder output, then align the selected settings with the stream configuration and YouTube’s guidance. |
| A long broadcast does not appear as one complete archive | YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours | Verify current Studio behavior for long sessions and separately record segments if a complete archive is required. |
