To repeat one video in OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To repeat several videos in order, add a VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. VLC must be installed for that source to appear; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Choose the right OBS source

These are separate controls: looping governs what happens at the end of a file or playlist, while activation and visibility settings govern what happens when a source appears or disappears. OBS lists the Media Source restart option as enabled by default. VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist is enabled by default; Shuffle Playlist is disabled by default. The VLC source’s listed default visibility behavior is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Loop one video file
- In OBS, select the scene where the video should play. In the Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source.
- Open the source properties and choose the local video file.
- Enable Loop. It repeats the file after playback completes; the documented default is off.
- Keep Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if you want the clip to start from the beginning whenever the source becomes active. This option is documented as enabled by default.
Loop several videos as a playlist
- Install VLC Media Player. If VLC Video Source is not available after installation, restart OBS.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a VLC Video Source.
- Add the video files to the source’s playlist. For the files to play in the listed order, leave Shuffle Playlist off; turn it on only if you want randomized order.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback repeats after OBS runs through the files.
- Set Visibility Behaviour for how the playlist should behave while its source is hidden. Choose the available continue, pause, or stop behavior that fits the scene. With the listed default, it stops when hidden and restarts when visible.
OBS documents the VLC source and its playlist properties in the Media Sources guide; the Sources Guide also describes adding a playlist when VLC Media Player is installed.
If you need a folder or different playlist controls
Folder scanning with PlayFolder
The OBS-hosted PlayFolder script page describes selecting a Media Source and a folder. It says the script plays files sequentially, loops back to the first file, and starts playback when the scene or source becomes active. Its instructions are specific: it supports Media Source only, and say not to use VLC Source or OBS’s internal looping options with the script. Follow the current PlayFolder resource instructions when configuring it.

Media Playlist Source plugin
The OBS-hosted Media Playlist Source plugin is another option for playlist editing and shuffle features. Its resource page says releases from version 0.1.0 require OBS 31 and lists limitations. Check the latest release notes and platform and OBS-version support before installing it: Media Playlist Source.
Troubleshoot automatic restarting
- The clip stops at the end: For one file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video Source properties.
- Playback restarts when you switch scenes: For Media Source, review Restart playback when source becomes active. For VLC Video Source, review Visibility Behaviour; it determines what happens while the source is hidden.
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. Check that VLC and OBS have matching bitness; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- You want new files in a folder to be handled automatically: The built-in source instructions cover file and playlist settings. PlayFolder is a separate script route with its own configuration constraints; consult its current resource instructions before using it.
