Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo livestream a podcast episode on YouTube with Streamlabs Desktop, connect your YouTube channel, choose your microphone and any optional camera, prepare the scene and stream details, then preview the broadcast before going live. Afterward, organize the completed recording separately if you want it to appear as an episode in a YouTube podcast playlist.
Before you set up the livestream
Check that your YouTube channel is verified and has no livestream restriction from the previous 90 days. If this is your first livestream, verify the channel and allow time for YouTube’s setup process before scheduling the show. See YouTube’s livestream requirements.
Decide whether you are broadcasting a live conversation or presenting a prerecorded episode. Streamlabs Desktop is the encoder workflow for a live video broadcast: you select the audio and video sources and send that output to YouTube. YouTube’s podcast feature is a separate way to organize full-length video episodes in a podcast playlist; it does not make an MP3-only livestream possible.

Allow device access and select your sources
When prompted, grant Streamlabs Desktop permission to use your microphone and camera. Add or select the microphone you will use for the conversation. Add a webcam only if you want a camera image; a camera is not required for an audio-led show. Streamlabs Desktop may detect connected devices, but no particular microphone or webcam model is required by the cited setup guidance.
-
Build the podcast scene
Arrange the sources in the scene so the on-screen picture matches your format. For a solo audio-first show, you could use a static visual or other suitable video source with your microphone. For a video-forward episode, check camera framing and confirm that the intended camera is active. Keep the microphone prominent in your audio setup and avoid leaving an unintended device selected.

Complete the stream information requested by Streamlabs Desktop, such as the episode title and visibility where those controls are offered. Check the corresponding event details in YouTube’s Live Control Room, especially if you scheduled the broadcast there. Platform controls can change, so use the labels currently shown in your installed version of Streamlabs Desktop and YouTube.

Preview and test before the public episode
Start with a suitable test stream, such as an unlisted test when available. Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm that the event is accessible to the intended audience, and listen for clean microphone audio. Review the camera framing and scene, too, if the episode includes video. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio and video quality; its encoder guidance explains the platform-side workflow.

Start the show and monitor it
When the preview and stream details are right, use Streamlabs Desktop’s Go Live control to begin the broadcast. Keep an eye on the live output and monitor audio and video while recording or hosting the episode. If you discover a source problem, correct it in the scene or device selection rather than assuming the audience hears or sees the same thing you do locally.
Equipment: what you need and what is optional
A working microphone is the essential source for a spoken podcast. A USB microphone can connect directly to a computer, while an XLR microphone generally needs a compatible audio interface; which makes sense depends on your existing equipment and number of hosts. The cited YouTube and Streamlabs setup guidance does not test or recommend particular models. Existing equipment may be sufficient, and YouTube’s live-streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

Make the recording a YouTube podcast episode
Going live and organizing a podcast on YouTube are separate tasks. YouTube Help explains: “On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos within that playlist.” After the broadcast, use the completed livestream recording as a video episode if it suits your show, then add it to the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio. The playlist should contain full-length episodes and be ordered for the show. An MP3 alone cannot be added in Studio as a YouTube podcast episode. See Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.RSS is a separate option for audio-first episodes
If you are publishing audio-first episodes or a back catalog rather than broadcasting a live show, YouTube can accept an RSS feed in supported countries and regions. It can create static-image videos from selected feed episodes and upload new feed episodes automatically. Availability is geographic, so check whether RSS delivery is offered for your account and region in YouTube’s RSS delivery guidance.

RSS-published audio does not automatically update after publication. If you re-upload an episode, YouTube makes the old video private and creates a new video. Check visibility and copyright or monetization status for uploads. YouTube’s RSS instructions also state that podcast content uploaded by RSS cannot contain advertisements; host-read promotions, sponsorships, or endorsements must be disclosed with the branded-content setting and follow applicable policies. That RSS-specific restriction should not be assumed to describe every livestream format.
Troubleshooting a podcast livestream
- You cannot start a livestream: check channel verification and whether YouTube has restricted livestreaming on the channel within the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
- Streamlabs cannot use the microphone or camera: revisit the operating-system permission prompt and confirm the intended device is selected in Streamlabs Desktop.
- The preview has the wrong picture or no picture: inspect the active scene and camera source, confirm camera permission, and check framing before starting the public show.
- The audience cannot hear the podcast clearly: confirm the active microphone input and listen to a test stream before the episode. YouTube recommends checking and monitoring audio quality.
- The recording is not in the podcast playlist: a livestream does not automatically become an organized podcast episode. Add the completed video to the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio.
- An RSS episode is out of date: RSS uploads do not update automatically after publication. Re-uploading creates a new video and makes the previous one private.
